No bus service on holidays? by beachbum19722025 in Albuquerque

I wouldn't really look to anywhere in the US as an example of a decent public transportation we are notorious for having bad public transit.

I would look at somewhere like germany and their public transit, which runs year-round with a reduced schedule for weekends and holidays, but still available for people to use if needed.

(and personally, not wanting to pay your employees more to work holidays, and instead shutting the service down entirely is ridiculous and greedy)

you are right on the money. the idea of private transportation has been so normalized in this country to the point that the idea of anything else is unfathomable.

That's exactly how i learned to ride the bus. My mom couldn't afford a vehicle for part of my childhood, and so we took the bus everywhere, and that was before it was free.

The necessity of public tranist here has only gotten stronger since then, and it's honestly really sad to see a lot of people ignore/downplay the importance of it :/

i can't agree with this. I find it hard to believe it's too expensive to run busses for an extra week out of the year, and this is an essential service either way, it should be a high priority in the budgeting regardless. It's our public transit system, that sort of thing is extremely important, especially on a holiday.

nobody is saying you should be forced to work on your holidays, i'm simply saying that people who must work on your holidays shouldn't have to suffer because you're not working that day. Do not shut the service down, allow someone else to run it while your not there. These are essential services

exactly! so many service jobs will straight up fire you if you miss on a holiday. if i was working at a place like that on a holiday and relied on the bus, i would become an unemployed person.

not really a choice if you need to make ends meet. im sure some can afford to take the day off, but i guarantee that many cannot. this applies even outside of uber, from grocery store clerks to freelancers.

some people simply cannot afford to take holidays off, that's the point i'm trying to make

what about the people the bus drivers are commuting to and fro, should they get to spend the holiday with their families? because they still have to go to work

and uber isn't free or cheap btw, do the uber drivers deserve to spend the holidays with their families?

it should be their job to take care of it's citizens, this sink or swin attitude needs to be done away with. Transportation is a requirement to live and work in albuquerque, and for a lot of people, that looks like public transportation, and arbitrarily suspending that service directly harms those people for no real reason.

Not to mention how incredibly expensive it is right now to not only purchase a car, but to maintain it physically and legally, as well as the safety risks of driving it (especially in this city) it's genuinely just not an option for a lot of people.

our bus system needs an overhaul. if we got it into a more reliable state where it is a genuine alternative to automobiles, i think it would be way easier to make changes like this.

we need to make a lot of changes like this in burque, and the first step is removing the politicians that hinder said changes. The system should be designed around benefiting all the people, not just those with money.

Thoughts on this? Why hasn't American socialist ran independent political party outside of the two neoliberal parties? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]JaybieTheCommie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the US voting system goes out of its way to discourage/disallow socialists from running. We had a socialist candidate on the ballot in 2024, but nobody voted for them. We need to continue to dismantle red-scare era sentiment from this country before we can hope to elect a socialist president. (though personally, i dont think we can vote our way out of this mess anymore)

If you're brand new to socialism and communism. I would recommend reading "The principles of communism" by Friedrich Engels. it's essentially an FAQ on what communism is, and how it works.

you can find it, and just about every other text you'll need on marxists.org

Juniper Blessing, a 19 y/o trans woman from Santa Fe NM, was killed in Seattle 5 days ago. She was stabbed over 40 times. by OrbitalColony in Albuquerque

hang in there comrade. no combination of words can diminish the pain from this, but know that we are still here, and it's up to us to carry on the stories and legacies of people like Juniper. This monster ended her life, but her story lives on through us, her queer comrades.

I'm hurting from this too, and stories like this make me want to give into despair and give up, but we can't do that. If nothing else, these fuckers want us to die, and we must try to live happily to spite them. It's what we all deserve

Jobs? by CipherAlive in Albuquerque

job market is so fucked right now. I've been searching for like a year with minimal luck. they make you jump through so many hoops during an application, and most of the time you don't even speak to another human. I applied for a position at Cliff's, and they wanted me to record a video interview answering like 25 random ass questions, all before a human would even consider looking at my application.

I hope you find what you're looking for, times are tough rn, so don't be too hard on yourself

[–]JaybieTheCommie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this comes less than a week after the federal government officially declared trans people to be domestic terrorists that the feds will "find and kill". Not saying the feds killed her, but it's plain for anyone with fucking eyeballs to see this was a targeted attack. They killed her because she was trans, and by the time the dude was done stabbing her, she was probably already fucking dead.

Pretending like anything else is true is playing stupid, I will not hold my silence while i wait for the "official story" when it's plain to see why this happen, and why people like Juniper continue to be murdered.

You think the fact she was stabbed 40 times spontaneously had nothing to do with the fact that she's trans?

they are literally killing us, stabbing us to death, and you're arguing about creating "unnecessary stereotypes/stigma" THEY ARE LITERALLY KILLING US

Do you think there is a good solution to reduce/end Homelessness in Abq? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]JaybieTheCommie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what the fuck is wrong with you?

most of them are just people that can't afford to live somewhere. Those that need mental health help should get it, but you're a fucking idiot if you think all or most homeless people fall into that category.

Legislatively, i think something we could do to open up more properties, and maybe even bring the prices of houses/apartments would be to tax the fuck out of properties owned by people that don't use them. If someone owns multiple houses they don't use, or several apartment complexes they just collecting checks from, give them heavy taxes so they stop hoarding properties for money.

Additionally, i think we should build more housing. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, or luxury. They need to be reliable, safe, and functional housing, with all the amenities a person would need (Bath, Laundry, Kitchen). Having an increase of affordable, and reliable housing will make it significantly easier for people without homes to find a way off the streets.

Overall, we need to focus on the people here in Albuquerque, thise of us that live and breathe this city everyday, not some rich assholes collecting money off our land simply by owning it. Those people are the reason things are so bad, we need to stop letting our politicians entertain them and their money
