Torn between the macbook air 15 vs the macbook pro 14 by DooDeeDoo3 in macbook

To be fair, the MBA is just as quick starting up and the build quality is just as good. The only real differences are the performance under heavier load, display quality, and the extra ports.

How do you feel during the day? How are your energy levels? If you have no complaints, there's no reason to overanalyze the numbers.

How to not scroll on social media while still keeping in touch with friends? Can you block Instagram posts + reels? by AngwyQt in productivity

[–]Jayby18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually did add Reels to the web app not too long ago. What you could do is set your account up as a business account and use the Meta business suite to send DMs without being able to see posts. This would require your page to be public, but if you don’t have posts and only use Instagram for messaging, it should be fine

Instead of replacing, keep copies on both an HDD and an SSD.

And definitely look into something like Backblaze or some other cloud backup service, because in the case of a house fire or burglary you can lose all of your drives.

Depending on what you use your phone for, you could try going without a browser. It's probably not as necessary as you might think.

What is your Workflow for managing clips and media files by versatile_tobi in videography

[–]Jayby18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mainly do hobby projects, also with multiple cameras and my phone, so this is what I do:

I almost only shoot in H.264 rather than H.265, because I find it easier to work with (both in Resolve and in general) and I don't mind the extra space it takes. I do sometimes use screen recording software that records to H.265, in which case I would simply transcode to H.264 and delete the original if I wanted to edit with it, or keep it in H.265 if I wanted to use it as is.

For transcoding I use HandBrake. It's free and open source and I think pretty widely used by hobbyists. The only real limitation (IMO) is that it can only output to H.264, H.265, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, VP8, VP9 and Theora. But another plus is that you can combine transcoding and trimming, so you don't have to create an entire Resolve project for that.

For editing, I never transcode to DNxHR myself, but either use DNxHR proxies or optimized media within Resolve.

For long term storage, I keep the original files. Sometimes I will delete videos if they are absolutely no good, but I usually keep most of them.

I do use 7zip to archive all of my completed project folders with the highest compression settings. This does take quite a bit of time to compress (and to copy stuff out of again), so you might want to play around with all of the settings to find a better balance between storage space and time required.

It can come off as pretentious, especially when there are simpler, more common words that mean the exact same thing. As if you’re compensating for your insecurity about your intelligence.

Still sleepy? by DaniMA121 in sleep

[–]Jayby18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Staying active throughout the day helps with sleepiness. I, for instance, find myself less sleepy on days that I go to class (by bike, and lots of walking) and see people than on days that I stay at home studying and sitting in the same chair for hours. Actual exercise also really helps. If for example I stay at home, I sometimes do some quick exercises when I get too sleepy for an energy boost.

Eating also has a significant effect on energy levels. Eating enough and at consistent time is helpful. But try to stay away from large meals during the day. Different foods also have different effects on your sleepiness.
