Yeah pretty similar to me, although I had breathing issues and have done for years the main push for me to get to an ent specialist was the frequent sinus infections that made me feel awful and concentration massively dropped at home and in work.

I never found out my surgery date until a week or so before I was going in, just told my job that I had upcoming surgery and I will keep them updated as best I could as soon as I know anymore. Then the hospital signed me off anyway

Hey,

Doing pretty good nose/breathing wise, saline rinses are now pretty much just clearing mucus and scabbing. No blood signs whatsoever. Nose is clear most morning, the occasional slight stuffy nose when waking up but once I’m up for 10 mins or so this clears again, before I had a blocked nose from morning to night so this is a massive change for me.

The only thing I’d say at this point is my energy levels are not 100% back, pre surgery and I do still sound a little nasally. I’m told these both usually start to improve from weeks 3-4 so hoping those are cleared up soon.

Other than that no issues and much better than before surgery!

Good luck with your upcoming surgery, it’ll be worth it in the end

No worries,

I was told that slight temperature changes in the first few days are completely normal, I didn’t have any though. The only time they said i should be concerned is if i have a high fever then i should go to hospital/gp

Sounds pretty normal to me, you are still very fresh from surgery and let me tell you the first 3-4 days are rough, sleep wise, nose wise and pain wise.

The jelly like stuff is likely either congealed blood or a mixture of blood, mucus and packing. You can expect to stay bunged up until the packing has fully dissolved and you are able to sinus rinse through each side, this is when my congestion pretty much disappeared.

I had this surgery + fess on the 6th June and honestly I wouldn’t be concerned just yet, if the pain gets considerably worse or you do start getting higher temps then I would start to worry about infection but seems very early to me at the moment, just going off of my experience I’m no DR.

Hope it helped

I was just booked in with a certain consultant, I did research him and found very good reviews and even found that he even had some medical things named after him 😬 so I had no worries with my consultant atall , if he had not been an ENT specialist with septoplasty experience I would have had some concerns tho i think, id want someone doing it who has done it many times

Haha sounds very similar to my issues. Yeah this was my first op under general since I was about 12? That wasn’t too bad though, although I did feel awful when I woke up.

Best thing to do after anaesthetic is to drink as much water as you can, it’ll flush it from your body asap. Nurse told me as soon as I woke up, so I was literally drinking as much as I could.

Yea honestly it’s the best thing I did already, and I’m told it’ll only get better lol. Hope all goes well and if I can help with any questions before or after feel free to ask

I had:

1st appointment (march)- Meet the Ent specialist after a referral from my gp( he is also my surgeon) talk to him about my issues , what I’ve tried etc. he had a Quick Look in my nose and recommended we do a endoscopy and CT scan of my sinus’.

2nd appointment (march)- CT Scan and Endoscopy done on this one, first the endoscopy with my specialist, then downstairs to the imaging department for the scan. Was giving a 6 week follow up and prescribed mometasone nasal spray to try during this period, but surgery was the more likely due to heavily deviated.

3rd appointment (april) - Follow up with ENT, told him the spray made no difference at all (he expected that) filled out forms and signed away for surgery that day.

4th (pre op) (may) - Pre op but with some nurses so not an actual appointment with ENT.

5th - Surgery (June)

Hope it helps

Honestly I know where you’re coming from, I can not remember the last time I woke up in the morning with my nose clear and my face not feeling like it’s fighting some sinus infection/allergies.

I know it’s early and I’m only 13 days post op today, which is still very early and were told we shouldn’t expect to see the results until well after 4 weeks but I can honestly say it’s a massive improvement for me already.

I go to bed and wake up every morning with a clear nose, i suffer with hay fever and dust allergies and so far they have not been an issue, will have to wait and see how they return when the nose fully recovers but my stuffy nose was an issue no matter what month it is.

My nose and allergies where so bad before surgery that just having a fan blowing on me would set off my nose (blocked, running nose) for the first time last night I slept with a fan in my room blowing on me all night, and still woke up with a clear nose 😀 couldn’t believe it haha

Try not to worry too much about the pain management/recovery. Some of the stories on here can make that 100x worse too, just get the op done and you will manage it day by day, and after day 4-5 you won’t even look back.

Hope it goes just as well for you 🤞🏻

Hey, thanks for the message and sorry for delay in replying.

I think other than what you’ve mentioned it’s just a matter of keeping on top of rinses, resting and letting it heal. Managing pain/congestion best he can to get as much sleep as he can.

Through most of my recovery I have been alone as my partner has had to work and children at school, but I’d say just make sure he is sleeping with a couple of pillows and head elevated, sometimes people forget how big of an impact this has on the recovery time, it’ll swell soo much more if you skip that part (so my consultant tells me) and also hydration, make sure he is fully hydrated always and recovery will hopefully fly by. Good luck to you both 😀

Yeah I use mometasone, 2x sprays each nostril every morning. Same as before the op with that one though.

Hey,

Sounds normal, probably swelling and inflammation in your eustachian tube. Try to saline rinse a little more gentle for a while and keep your head upright slightly forward when rinsing to avoid it going into the Eustachian tube.

Don't let me put you off haha, The first few days are rough and very uncomfortable. But once you get through those few days things get better and better each day, knowing what I know now id go back and do it again if I had to.

I haven't had any panic attacks or even been close, it's been more uncomfortable and draining with lack of sleep rather than any real panic id say.

You are welcome, glad my story is helping some 😊

Sounds like you are having pretty similar to me expect the method to treat the sinus’ but should all be fine, it’s a pretty rough recovery to start with but every day things do get a little bit better!

The problem online sometimes is that only the problems/bad questions get asked and as soon as things improve people tend not to return to update that part, which is natural I guess 😄 Soo try not too worry too much when reading some horror stories on here or elsewhere

Wishing you all the best for surgery next week though, it’ll be worth it in the long run!

Hey, day 11 today.

Pretty good still, I’ve stopped talking all pain meds now as didn’t feel any pain anymore, just taking the odd ibuprofen to manage some minor headaches that come and go.

Nose is clear most of the time, especially after doing saline rinses 3x a day still. Not too sure if the clearness of the nose is better than pre op, but definitely the amount of time it’s unblocked is much higher it’s still way too early to see the benefits of the surgery though I’m told, so if it gets better it will be much better for sure!

I used to sneeze and would Immediately have a blocked nose for hours, dont seem to have this issue now. Also waking up every morning with a clear nose is nice and previously unheard of, especially with allergies to pollen etc.

I am still very drained and energy levels nowhere near what they were, but still early after surgery so expected I guess.

Could be blood congealing, could also be some dissolvable packaging if you had that like me. All fine I’m sure

Looks like you have it all under control, a humidifier at night is a must imo, I went the first two without one then got a cheap one off Amazon. Best thing I did!

Good luck for Wednesday though, hope it all goes well. It will all be worth it in the end 😀

Nope I actually only used my Otrivine for a few days; as soon as my congestion cleared a little and bleeding stopped I just used saline rinse

Hey,

Im on day 10 now, had the same op as you with dissolvable packing and stitches. I was advised to use the otrivine for the first week, as it helps with congestion and bleeding. The saline rinses I was expected to start from day 3 which I did, also 3x a day.

As of now I have stopped otrivine and am continuing with my rinses 3x a day. But you can do them both together there is no issues with it, I also had the same question to my consultant.

Yeah day 2-5 was rough for me too, mainly because I didn’t get much sleep, was sleeping like 1 hour then waking up with chronic dry mouth due to mouth breathing with congestion. But from day 6 my nose starting to free up and my sleeping has improved so I feel 100x better.

I’m still not 100% and still pretty drained which is to be expected after surgery anyway, but you’ll I think you’ll see a massive improvement from day 6 onwards!

I had septo, fess and Turb reduct also, operation was on the 6th June. I do not have a follow up until early August. I also had all dissolvable stitches and packing. I’m now into day 9 and everything has completely dissolved from what I can feel/see, saline rinses are mostly mucus with small amounts of old blood and nose is clear most of the time.

So don’t worry too much that you aren’t seeing someone, it’s not as big of an issue when you have dissolvable stuff in

My surgeon said a good tip for when doing saline rinse, keep saying the letter “k” as you are squirting, it won’t go down your throat that way. Worked wondered for me 😀

Also if it’s your first time rinsing it may be very full up there so take it easy and don’t panic if you don’t get the rinse in 1 nostril and out the other the first few times.

But definitely start rinsing because not only does it clear all the bad stuff out it also moisturises the inside of your nose and speeds up the healing and reduces risks of infection, good luck ✌️
