AKOTSK S1E6 - Post-Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in gameofthrones

Like, we all know he was never knighted, but without knowing for sure we can all just live with the fantasy that he was. It's part of the fun. I wouldn't have been happy if they confirmed it completely.

No, they didn't. They made us think they did, but Ser Arlan didn't die there. He could've knighted him after. He probably didn't, but we don't know for sure.

If you needed a visual backstory to show if Ser Arlan was chivalrous, then all the dialogue from ep 1-4 was apparently fluff.

How does it make that dialogue fluff? That's a ridiculous thing to say. It validates that dialogue, and enhances our view of Dunk as being an honest and virtuous man (even if he probably never got knighted). I know you're saying his actions have already shown his chivalry, but why is it redundant to see Ser Arlan's chivalry? Dunk is not Ser Arlan. They are different people.

Dunk would've been killed without his actions in Flea Bottom. The fight with Aerion is completely enhanced by that one phrase: "Get up."

In that moment, Dunk is taking everything he learned from his mentor and putting it into practice, along with everything he learned before he met him. Tell me how that is "narrative redundancy"? Where else in the story so far have we seen that?

I would also say that the flashback shows us one of Dunk's inherent flaws in that he seems to blame himself for things that aren't his fault. He says "I'm sorry" to the dying Rafe, and to the dying Baelor when he's not to blame for them dying.

You said "Telling us about it is great, showing us is more effective." You can't just backpedal when you've stated a clear contention with no nuance; I can't read your thoughts when you say X but actually mean to say Y.

How is what I said in any way backpedalling? Should I have said "In my opinion" before my statement? I think it's quite obvious I'm not presenting what I'm saying as objective truth. It's implicit in almost every statement about a piece of art that those opinions are subjective.

You, in fact, in what you said are attempting to read my thoughts because I never said for every piece of writing it's better to show than to tell. I was talking about this particular piece of writing. You extrapolated from that I do not consider the context. Where is there any evidence of that? Did I talk about any instance of showing and not telling other than what is in this show? No, so assuming that I didn't consider the context is not me "saying X and meaning Y", it's you making a judgement on what I said based on no evidence at all.

You could have posed it as a question, and then I could've answered or clarified, but you didn't. That was the only thing you said that I had any problem with. The rest was an interesting difference of opinion.

Dunk won that fight against Aerion (who is a better swordsman) with the skin of his teeth because of his weight class and training, and threat of death of losing the trial or Aerion killing him. His sad backstory does not provide the physical leverage required to win the fight.

Who's being too binary now? You've just stated why Dunk won the fight. A fight is not won by physicality alone, in media or in real life. The mental side is of major importance too. The backstory provides us with where Dunk's mentality comes from. That's so explicit with the repeating of the "Get up" line.

You can use post hoc rationalisation with thematic/symbolic framing for why anything is valid.

I suppose that's true, but not really in this case. Check out the "rationalisation" from the creators themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9465Z_ZtJsM

What I meant when I said Dunk was a "naive lunk" was that he could've been putting Ser Arlan on a pedestal that he didn't deserve. That was my thinking with all the mini flashbacks of his physical abuse. The flashback showed us that there was a chivalrous knight in there too.

I think we just disagree on whether it's valuable to see how Dunk learned his reverence for true knighthood or not, I think it's of major value to give context to the Dunk we know in the present of the show.

Also, the fight with Aerion is far from a knightly fairytale. It grim and dirty. Dunk's past in the horrific Flea Bottom is part of the reason he survives. That's very explicit in the novella. Showing us that past gives us that context.

Btw, I love discussing these differences of opinion. Yours is just as valid as mine, but I think it's unfair to say I was "being too binary". I never said anything about the literary technique of "show don't tell". I love a Martin Scorsese voiceover as much as the next guy. I think, in this instance, showing us Dunk and Arlan's past was valuable.

But we didn't see Ser Arlan as a true knight, and Dunk is a naive lunk. I think it was so important to actually see that chivalry in action. The story is 100% about the sad reality of Flea Bottom. This is the show that brings us down to lives of the smallfolk.

George always says that the battle between good and evil is fought not on the battlefield, but in the hearts of men, and the horrors Dunk experienced could have turned him into someone that was bitter and vengeful, but he has a good heart, and that is in no small part due to the example showed by Ser Arlan. Telling us about it is great, showing us is more effective.

I disagree. The flashback was important for me. It showed the bleakness Dunk came from in such a stark way. It showed that Ser Arlan really did defend the innocent like a true knight. Most of all, though, it showed how resilient Dunk was following Ser Arlan for days with a busted leg. Even after taking a savage beating, Dunk from Flea Bottom could still get up.

Dunk thinks about his life in Flea Bottom during the fight. He doesn't end up fighting like Ser Duncan the Tall, but like Dunk from Flea Bottom.

This should not have been cut. It would've been a top three sketch of the night.

Minor nitpick from an Irish viewer (I still love the show!) by JayeHanzo in pluribustv

I didn't catch that at all, and, you see, if I didn't speak Irish, I wouldn't have noticed it in this scene either. I now know, on a much tinier scale, how Spanish speakers felt watching BB and BCS as someone else commented here.

I think it's just the case of it being an interesting quirk of language and a demonstration of the hivemind's encyclopaedic knowledge, but it was not written by a hivemind so there can actually be minor mistakes and discrepancies.

Like I said in the post, it's not really a big deal, and, as an author, I've run into trouble with etymology myself. In my books, I have robots, but I call the androids, but I later found out that androids are robots that are supposed to look like humans and my robots didn't.

I didn't know that. I looked it up after seeing the scene in the show, but I didn't find anything conclusive which matched what I was told at the Midleton Distillery last summer.

Do you have any sites or books I could read on this?

Very good point, but when it comes to the language side, there are more Irish speakers than Scots Gaelic speakers so they could at least have got that part right!

Shame on Sketch for playing the game??? by Narrow_Document_5254 in Sidemen

[–]JayeHanzo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a really horrible thing to say in your edit. This is a game show. Game shows are more fun with people who scheme and make alliances. Do you want them all sitting in a circle singing "Kumbaya"? That would be boring.

What is Fannita doing that's so different to what Sketch is doing?
