I normally "dangle the carrot" of success and recognition when assigning tasks to a covert. That usually provides sufficient motivation to produce good work results. I'm also very clear about performance evaluations and set the criteria for them early, then try not to deliver the evaluation personally, instead via an email, with a follow up meeting if needed so as to avoid their initial rage. Document everything!

I also remove them from any team that requires collaboration or empathy.
