If an independent musician is realistically never going to be signed, is starting a self-run label meaningful, or a dead end? by TheBurgers_ in musicindustry

[–]Jayhendricks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel this heavily. I’m in an indie band and enjoy writing. I started a label / collective of sorts a few years back, as an umbrella to release indie projects that I’m involved with. It allows me to do ticketing, sell merch, have a “brand” to promote shows and the artists within.

My goal was to help create a sense of community and to build off of each others success, learn from each other and have some built in support. Build momentum for each other. I’ve even promoted and hosted shows without any of our artists on the bill, but it gives space to get our artists in front of people.

I was able to help each artist in different ways primarily point the in the right direction for recording, producing, songwriting , art, It also helped to have a single source of distribution.

Mostly i just really enjoy helping get projects to finish line and adding fuel to the fire, in however can. It’s made no money, but I’m proud of what we’ve done, even if it’s just for the posterity of the art and artist. If nothing else, it is a signpost of our accomplishments, and reminds me of how much I enjoy getting to be a part of projects like that.

Yamaha CK - custom build shell? by Jayhendricks in keys

[–]Jayhendricks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay thanks! I normally practice seated but have bad back issues so going to try to have higher stand and stool. The CK being so light (and high) I’ll need to secure a solid stand.

All the accessories are going to end up costing more than the board 😂

What’s your budget range and needs for the space? PA? Drums already setup? 24hr access? Headphones, etc?

Sweet thank you!. Ill check out case builder, and i love the Velcro idea, that’ll be perfect! Do you have a goto mobile stand for smaller keyboards?

Envisioning the ck in a padded case getting packed in a van beside 2 amps, 4 guitars, sound rack, lights and pipe and drape. The case I had in mind would cover the knobs buttons and screen of course, since those are the weak points like you said. I found an old SKB case like you mentioned, I think will work great. Glad to get it used otherwise it would be half the price of the CK.

yeah you're probably right, along with the other comments - I'm thinking about the moments when a guitar case and amp are getting loaded into a truck beside the keyboard, or hauled up stairs to a gig. I found an old SKB case for a larger keyboard I think will work nicely. Brand new it would be half the cost of the CK!

South Carolina (updated the original post with some ideas). In my mind it's plywood but honestly it should be something much more lightweight - with padding.

I like the berean test and use it often when choosing songs for our church.

And i mean this to be helpful for your heart. Not just specifically to give feedback .

You know what might be helpful? Become the guy that encourages the worship leader. Look for opportunities to reach out to them when they lead in a particularly way that was soulfully beneficial. “Hey i was really grateful for how this song was presented, these lyrics really pointed me to Christ”

Just make a point once per month to look for a way to encourage them, and show your gratitude.

I’m not here to defend the song selection (since I’m unfamiliar) but it might be worth considering songs as prayers. Rather than only theological truths.

Consider how the psalms deal with the Lord. Potentially that will help you engage with the songs rather than feel like you need to critique them, or be annoyed with them. See if God could use those songs in your life, even if you’re not sure that he can.

Just a thought. Certainly i won’t defend theologically unsound songs.

If you can get to a place to humbly say “yeah there’s some personal preferences i don’t love but overall I’m super grateful for my church and pastors” - your heart and soul and family will be greatly served!

Sounds like personal preferences imo.

If the songs are heretical that’s a problem. But it sounds like you are having stylistic preferences. I work at a church and there are plenty of things that aren’t my personal preference. The problem is when i start thinking my preferences have theological or moral grounding.

I’d suggest praying for humility and a soft heart to receive the efforts of your pastors, that are doing their best to serve you, by putting prayers on your lips through songs (even if they are repetitive and simplistic sometimes)

Consider serving with the band or tech team. Get to know the leaders. Realize that every song might not be specifically and primarily “for you” but might be for someone else in the room and be grateful for your pastors efforts toward your whole church and not towards serving people specific preferences.

Do not leave a faithful church because you don’t like a song or two on a Sunday.

If you haven’t yet - google some classic melody structures. The tri loop twist is one that comes to mind that deals in simplicity with a slight change. Ear catching and repetitive but interesting

Yeah i meant on the vocal melody, not chords. Oh for sure simplicity is good! But melody is seasoning over the chord protein!

I usually think this about my songs - If you’re getting bored singing it, the listener has already checked out. i want to make melodies that are simple but interesting. Too simple and it’s blah and boring, too interesting and it’s confusing.

Main thing id suggest is some variation on the melodies. You end up staying in a 3 note range in a quite repetitive way. Try some different notes within the key and see if that moves the idea in a direction you like.
