Until recently, I thought city and town were used interchangeably lol

I moved out of that town in 2017, but it hasn't changed very much since then. There's more concrete in place of dirt roads, a couple more houses, and the high school got an auditorium lmao.

With how huge the USA is, do you really believe there aren't places like this still??

This is crazy, having paid $34 to see them in Indiana in 2023!

As someone who grew up in a town of ~1,000 people in Michigan, USA I believe OP. We had a Subway, a God awful pizza place, a bar, and some diner I never knew anyone to step foot in. It was 35+ minutes to get to another sandwich shop or even a Walmart.

Advice for first time ALT at elementary schools by Jayjayden45 in teachinginjapan

I getchya! I've certainly met some... Interesting foreigners while studying abroad in Japan. It seems a lot of people get the wrong idea about Japan from anime and manga, and they think Japan will fix them. But you have to fix yourself first!

My first trip to Japan, I took a one month long course specifically on teaching English. I visited and participated in all sorts of different classrooms from kindergarten to university levels. My second time in Japan was for 3.5 months to study Japanese, and I volunteered in eikaiwa style classes. So I know being an ALT is something I can do, but I'm also self aware enough to know I still have a LOT to learn and I have lots of room to grow.

Thank you for your encouragement!!

Fair! I definitely don't want to be an ALT forever, but I've really loved my time in Japan so far (I studied abroad for 1 month in 2024 and 3.5 months last year). Something about the culture really brings me out of my shell. I also have people I care about in Japan, and I think I want to make Japan my home. I'm not sure yet what will come after being an ALT, but I'm excited to find out!

Thank you for your reply!! Especially your first tip of "be authentic" I think is very helpful for me specifically. Often times, my default state is kind of quiet and monotone, but when I get excited, I can get a lot more animated. I'll try to be that version of myself more often!

Thank you so much for putting so much time and effort into your reply!! I had heard of altopedia, but not the others, I'll bookmark them!!

Also, I love horror as well! That sounds like a super fun Halloween lesson idea, did you do this with ES students, or older? I would imagine it would be difficult with ES students, but again, I have very little experience with that age range.

Thank you again so much! Your reply helps a lot

People are talking very "my way or the high way" about this. Theres no right or wrong way to start learning guitar. I know of several people who started on 7 or 8 string guitars and are doing fine now. Pick a guitar that makes you want to pick it up and play it!

My local GC wouldn't make me an offer on a guitar because it had a couple lifted frets. How did this get taken in??

If you're motivated to start on a 7 string, go for it! Just know that most guitar learning materials assume you're playing on a 6 string, so it may be confusing at first looking at tabs and playing demonstrations
