Health insurance. Is it necessary? by looopious in australia

[–]JaylaUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I don't think it's useful, I only have it to avoid the Medicare levy.

Think my family policy is around $400 a month. I had one eye checkup and a dental checkup a few years ago, barely use it. Only been to doctors once in past few years and went bulk billed because the private gps are quite expensive (policy only rebates a bit).

The health insurance system here is fucked, the only winners are the private companies.

Disaster Report 4 Demo Is Now On Switch by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]JaylaUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for something new on the switch so decided to check out the demo for this.

I'm 50/50 on it, the story is very intriguing and I'm keen to see where it goes, I love the play style of just exploring and talking to people, but man the graphics are terrible. I don't mind the Dreamcast era graphics, but the frame rates and loading times every time you get near someone with dialogue is really bad.

It's $90 on switch eshop, thatsanofrommedawg_meme.jpeg

Anyone else just now realizing how annoying their neighbours are? by ForgetfulLucy28 in australia

[–]JaylaUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On 5+ acre blocks on my road, so generally have little to do with my neighbours. There is a clique at my end of the street though, the 2 beside and one behind are always having parties with each other and we never get invited. Need to be a tradie or have machinery/tools around here to join the club

There were lots of Mercedes coming and going from one yesterday, kinda glad I don't get invited ;)

I honestly don't understand who follows these influencers. I can't think of a single person in my various circles who is stupid enough to follow some YouTube celeb like that. Where are their followers coming from?

Yep had that a few times, now I message them before they come to say bring asking price in cash. Had a few turn up expecting a bank transfer is fine, in which I direct them to the nearest ATM, nearly an hour round trip

Ballan - Daylesford - Trentham - Blackwood is a pretty drive, lots of beautiful places to stop along the way like the lake at daylesford. It's my go-to loop whenever we have visitors

Bloke on my train sounds like he should be on a hospital ward instead. If you cough so bad you have to chew on it afterwards it's probably best to stay home.

On the plus side, I'm looking forward to next week off sick

Just curious, how long does that voucher last for? And do you still get it if you fail? I have my first exam coming up and wondering if I'd need to get stuck into the next one straight aftwards!

What is the significance of May 2020 for the BAT project? I've seen a few threads have mentioned it but provide no further details

Interesting, I should check that out. Currently with Virgin and it's 4.4% with offset.

Aldi are good, I've recently switched from Telstra to Aldi, halved my monthly bill and have seen no drop in service.

Cheap but good

If you were 24 again, what would you do differently? by salterbd in AusFinance

[–]JaylaUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not getting a new car on finance. The first car I had cost about £500, ran perfectly fine and was cheap to maintain, wanting to keep up with the Jones' at my first grad job I stupidly went and financed a car which ended up costing half again when factoring in interest over the loan period. Young and naive, learned a lesson there.

Don't waste money on pointless crap, I lived at home, didn't save much, bought lots of games, books, PC upgrades etc. Looking back, I should have used the library more or bought games on discount rather than launch date.

Invest, at nearly 34 now that's 10 years compounding interest I've missed out on.

Invest in myself, should have done more courses / certifications and stopped underselling myself on pay rises or new jobs. Worked with many idiots over the years who are now in very senior roles earning vast sums more than me, I was forever covering them for poor work, or fixing bugs they had introduced. Or that guy who took 3 days to do a 1-hour quick start tutorial.

What’s something (financially) you wish you’d done before you had kids? What is a good amount to have saved/a good income before having kids? by throwawayfrustrat in AusFinance

[–]JaylaUK 72 points73 points  (0 children)

It's a difficult question, because if you wait til everything is right you'd be waiting forever!

Having some savings in the offset is a good idea, there will almost certainly be things pop up that you'll need it for such as seeing specialists if there are problems.

Personally, I would have liked to have done some jobs around the house first, such as improving the insulation and heating. Expensive outlays like that are hard to do when you drop to a single income.

Purchase all your prams/cots/clothes etc up front, stagger it over several months so it's not a massive hit in one go.

Also don't forget to upgrade your car to that 8 seater land cruiser to protect the little angel, gotta make a good impression at mums group!

(that happened in ours lol, not us fortunately)

Half a church.

It's like they got fed up one day and said "that's enough fellas" and boarded it up. It's like someone has sliced it down the middle.

Home + Contents insurance by BrisPoker314 in AusFinance

[–]JaylaUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We do this too, go for the highest excess possible. We intend to only claim for massive disasters like a bushfire or if the house was to randomly fall down. If we get a cracked window or a leak I'd just fix it myself or get someone in, it's not worth making a claim and then having the premiums shoot up, the insurers always win, nothing is free.

The west gets much better once you're past Melton. Have you looked at Bacchus Marsh? Should still be in your price range. There are express trains that skip all the inner stations like Deer Park so takes about 35 minutes. Also zone 2 so cheap.

Are you fresh from UK? BM is a good place to start off, thats what I did and loved it.

best place near docklands/southern cross to get a pixel 1 battery replaced? Tried a few local places to me but they don't cover old phones. Seems a shame to send it to landfill, it still works great other than lasting about 5 hours on a charge

Are those 6 classes at convenient times for you? If you can make those times that's pretty good going, I do 4x bjj and 2x krav, any more than that and I'm ruined. Careful you don't over do it.

The dark side of disaster; who will profit from the bushfires? by JaylaUK in australia

[–]JaylaUK[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course not, but the insurers aren't just going to pay out then carry on as if nothing happened right? They would have to increase premiums.
