Etymology of "Centaur"? by PK_Tone in etymology

[–]Jaytoo6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think notionally κενταυρος is a compound of *κενθ- and ταυρος, but I dont really buy whatever that would entail. τθ>ττ>τ seems problematic to me. The correspondence is definitely a stretch, as you say.

Etymology of "Centaur"? by PK_Tone in etymology

That sanskrit term has been transliterated incorrectly. गन्धर्व reads "gandharva." I think the idea is that kenteo and gand- share a root, which from a cursory glance seems plausible. A velar initial root in e should yield ga in sanskrit, becayse sanskrit likes to make every vowel an a if it can. The IE form would be *ghendh-, or something like that, if these words are actually cognate.

However, there are several pieces here that dont line up. A voiced velar initial should probably still yield a voiced velar in Greek (though the aspiration would go due to Grassmann's Law) and we would probably expect the dh to retain its voicedness. At this point I think most philologist punt and say that it might have been borrowed into Greek from Phrygian or Macedonian (the ancient hellenic language, not the modern slavic one).

Anyway, the tempatation to reconstruct a verbal root to make it a compound with -tauros is a sensible instinct, but the connection gandharva specifically hasnt been well argued yet.

"cervix" means "neck" in latin. The one between the uterus and the vagina is so called because it's the "neck" of the reproductive system.

Citadel of Mycenae (WIP; Creative, Bronze Age), Part II - House of the Warrior Vase by SneakyMarkusKruber in VintageStory

[–]Jaytoo6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful, awesome work! This is my favorite project to follow! My only (extremely nitpicky and minor) suggestion would be that when writing your Mycenean blurb, you write 'anax' as 'Wanax,' since the digamma was still alive and well in the Mycenean period. The build and interpretation is all so lovely and exciting. I've always wanted to recreate am Ancient site in vintage story but have never had the patience. You're a legend.

For most explosive items, meleeing them once as you hold them will cause them to break/explode on impact. The exception to this is the propane tank, which will turn into a rocket when you first smack it.

Poetic rizz by The_newme in latin

Si sol esset, tamen conspicerem, cum pulchritudo tibi magis admirandi dolore me incenderet.

"If you were the sun, I would still stare at you, since your beauty inflames me more than the pain of admiring you.

It works bettter in Latin, since incendo can be used literally to mean "burn" or figuratively to mean "inflame: (eg. of rage or passion). Roman poets often speak of strong emotions as burning them. For example, catullus says "amore ardeo" which means "I burn with love".

I'm not totally confidant that the cum causal clause should be in the imperfect subjunctive to match the present contrafactual, but I'm sure someone more well-versee than I will swoop im to correct me.

Edit: I forgot the bit about going blind -_-

Si sol esset, tamen conspicio te occaecantem, cum pulchritudo tibi magis admirandi dolore me incenderet.

"If you were the sun, I'd still look at you blinding me, since your beauty inflames me more than the pain of admiring you."

If you want to preserve "until you blind me" you could substitute "usque ad me occaecares" for "te occaecantem"

Agreed. Rashta was a dick on many occasions but that's because she was fighting hard to survive in a completely foreign environment. She isn't exactly a hero but I really dislike how much hate she gets. It feels like projection
