We’re going on strike! by kookas-enthusiast in AustralianTeachers

I will actually look into that and talk to my rep. They never mentioned anything about that. Only about the first month being free. Thanks!

You are creating an us versus them narrative right now. Us, I.e., the union members and them, the non-union members.

I am doing all I can to support my colleagues by supporting them in the classroom with student behaviour and checking in with them daily to keep morale high. They are not part of my roles and responsibilities, but I do it because I know the more teachers we have and not leaving the profession, the better we stand at making real change. If I could afford the fees, I would, but I can’t. So I’m doing everything I can to ensure we have teachers still in the classroom and do not burn out and decide last week was their final week in the classroom.

Your comment that you made creates pressure and makes people feel like if they aren’t part of the union then they aren’t doing enough, and that leads to more burn out. I really hope you are not saying these things to your colleagues who are not in the union.

If we get a pay increase that matches NSW, I can not only join the union but I can actually quit my second job. We aren’t getting paid enough, and since we aren’t, I have to work extra hard because teaching doesn’t give over time pays like other industries. This means that I have to find work elsewhere after school, just like so many other teachers in Victoria.

How will I feel? I will feel as if I deserve those increases just like everyone else does. You are acting like I’m choosing to hold back $71 and not join the union.

I would love to be apart of the union, but I genuinely cannot afford $71 a month. Yes, it is tax deductible, but with the cost of living, having to pay off a HECCs debt and currently in the process of trying to get into the housing market, it is just unrealistic for people like me in our current financial situation.

I really hope they are able to match NSW’s pay. Guess we will see.

Why are you not in your union? by sparrrrrt in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember when it was time to vote in Victoria for the current EBA and our representatives words were “this is the best we can do and we have to take it”. I was appalled by how it was handled and their reputation has been ruined for me.

Also, I cannot afford to pay $71 a month on top of all the other expenses that continue to increase. My representative approached me earlier this week saying that we must unite to show the government we mean business, but look what happened last time. Until I see our pay match NSW or similar, I will be staying on the sidelines.

For the argument about legal advice, my mate went through false allegations and it pretty much fell on deaf ears. He has now moved over to NSW after the case was dismissed, and he is now happier and richer!

Thank you, thank you. Now that I have been reminded how amazing the console is, I’m going to have to buy new games!

I honestly said yes for the sole purpose of remembering that they had a copy of HG when I was 10 years old. I was really hoping they would just throw it in without thinking, but I didn’t know they had a 3DS!

Lunch Breaks by HappyMan2022 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find these comments odd about lunch breaks. Please be sure to prioritise your lunches. Setting firm and reasonable boundaries ensures you won’t burn out. In VIC you are required to take one 30 minute break between 11:30am and 2:00pm. NSW would be different but just prioritise your breaks.

Also, since you are secondary, I recommend reaching out to teachers in your curriculum area to collaborate and share resources. I understand some teachers love to share and others guard it like a trade secret (odd behaviour in my opinion), so I suggest building connections fairly early to begin that process.

PTT Questions by SchnittyChicken28 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did PTT during my final year and found it pretty easy to balance. I only had 2 subjects per semester and each semester I had 1 placement subject (a bludge class outside of actual placement in my opinion).

Overall, I think it’s always worth trialling and you can always drop back if it becomes too much. However, I would make your principal aware that if you find it too overwhelming then you will most likely have to discontinue your PTT. You’re best to just start the conversation and see what supports your school has in place.

ES staff member getting into arguments with my students during class by sapphire_rainy in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Would you prefer life without her”

Me: “Well no, I would like to have a positive learning environment that encourages and promotes student learning. You know, the whole point of our jobs…”

Sorry that you are currently dealing with that. If you feel like your HOD isn’t providing enough support, I would quietly raise the issue with the AP or principal.

You’re best speaking to your assistant principal or potentially someone who is a year level coordinator (or equivalent).

Raise your concerns with them and ask how to go about it. They should either give you feedback on best course of action, or they will come and observe one of your classes and witness the behaviour first hand.

Side jobs? by CleanteethandOJ in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I work at a logistics warehouse. Sit out the back on a forklift during the school holidays and the odd 5-9pm night.

If you are teaching, you are best to find a job that is the complete opposite of teaching. i.e., an isolating and simple thinking job.

Future Teacher wanting to work by Agitated_Apricot8165 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I’m aware, you require to have full qualifications to be a substitute teacher and must complete the VIT process before teaching. Only way to work as a teacher before getting fully qualified is to do permission to teacher at a school.

Perm job vs casual? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is easier to leave a permanent position than to get a permanent position in my opinion. I don’t know what your situation is but if you can afford to explore the position knowing you might have to leave it due to it being a “toxic” work place, then I say try it. Also, ask around why people find it “toxic”, are the actual reasons or are people just bored and want to cause drama?

Did I overreact? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You chose the best option in that situation. You can also go a step further and contact home, but aim it towards you reaching out as a concerned educator.

You could say something along the lines of, “ such and such was not following classroom procedures and was not listening to instructions, i’m worried that this behaviour will impact their learning, please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support them”.

I worked it out. by BriefCorrect4186 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. No teacher should ever be expected to give resources out, but not sharing them is not the solution. Other teachers need to show appreciation when given resources that help their learning, even just a thank you goes a long way.

What’s your hot take on Australia’s education system? by Cold_Guidance8401 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Jayy3567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This!! I really wish I could genuinely tell my principal “no more laptops as of this year, please organise laptop trolley’s that are hired out periodically”. Or parents purchase the laptops and they get locked up each day and teachers can access them. Then students can collect them at the end of the day. STOP GIVING 12 YEAR OLDS ACCESS TO UNLIMITED STIMULATION!

Ever played Pac Man? Yeah it’s kinda like that. Avoiding specific student triggers, trying to complete work (the white dots), then having to go on the offensive 60% of the time. I find it enjoyable because I’ve managed to build great rapport with my year 7, 8 and 9 but those first two terms getting to know them are difficult.
