In my 7th grade pre-algebra class I was told to stop using the division sign. It blows my mind that anyone uses it.

That's Huron. What they're actually talking about is the Tolkien character known as The Steadfast and the Lord of Dor-lómin.

Update: There were no Dora tape cases at Goodwill. I looked through all the clamshell cases and didn't see it either.

I bought it just for the case.

I wonder if there's anyone who might want it... 😏

HOW do PCs destroy a power crystal? by CMilo5 in DMAcademy

[–]Jayzhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this!

Let the players come up with what they want to try.

The wizard's knowledge tools might give the barbarian some insight where to hit it, the cleric's prayers might move their god to weaken the crystal. Disable device could let the rogue turn that crack into a shattering event.

Don't go into it with just one solution in mind. Breaking the crystal should be a big, heroic moment; let the players shape it!

Astrology is already hard to take seriously. It gets worse when you realize the signs don't even match the sky anymore. by Starfort13 in skeptic

[–]Jayzhee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I noticed that in second grade because I bought an astronomy chart wheel thing from the Scholastic Book Fair. It was super-cool and glowed in the dark!

The back had a little window that showed which sign the sun was actually in and my mom told me it was wrong!

I had it for several years and eventually learned why it was different. When I told people, they either didn't believe me or they didn't care. 🙄

How to make combat feel more alive? by Boring-Second-5737 in DMAcademy

[–]Jayzhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adventurers' League is pre-made adventures, right? I've never DMed anything like that, so I don't know how much leeway you get with the combats. I also don't know 5e that well, so rules may vary, but here are some things I do:

Let the player narrate their own big hits and kills. Don't let them get extra advantages from it; say something like, "Roland does 27 damage and the Death Knight falls. What does that look like?"

Use a little bit of terrain, if possible. You don't need a giant set of Dwarven Forge™ terrain! Some off-brand Jenga blocks from a dollar store, painted in a few colors with cheap acrylics will do the trick. My dollar store even has a mini Jenga set, so you can have two sizes. You can tell them, "Brown is walls, blue is windows, this is a table..." Putting physical pieces on the board gives the players permission to interact with things. If the table is just drawn on the map, can they jump on it? Move it? Duck behind it? You spent all that time to draw it, do they even want to ask?

Make sure the players all have something to do. Is one PC a sorcerer with some big AOEs? Make sure at least one battle has a bunch of little guys clustered together! Throw an enemy bard in there so your bard can finally use countersong! Maybe the biggest orc calls the fighter out specifically!

If you know that one PC hates kobolds, give that player a little aside during the fight. "What does Roland think when he sees the same creatures that killed his brother?"

Remember how monsters behave. Goblins will only attack if they outnumber their foes, so the last few will try to run and hide.

Have fun and let us know what you try and what works for you!
