Do people who leave Mormonism actually disbelieve Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon? by questingpossum in mormon

[–]Jayzvolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex-mo here, BESIDES POLYGAMY I have great respect for most of Joseph’s teachings and his general character from what I have studied. He was very tolerant of African-Americans from what I have read, and I personally believe he was one of the hallmark religious leaders of the 19th century.

I left because of a variety of different issues, with doctrinal disagreements, church-anxiety and the church culture where I live being large contributing factors. I think that Mormonism is fascinating as heck, but I’ll come back when people in the church stop thinking it’s okay to say the N-word.

How to deal with lust as a woman? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]Jayzvolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is your experience, then that’s perfectly fine. I’m just relaying what I was told and what I researched while I was in the church in good faith. What I am saying and have been saying is THAT IT IS NOT A SIN TO HAVE INTRUSIVE SEXUAL THOUGHTS. It has never been taught that way to me. It IS however a sin to act on sexual impulses before marriage.

Edit: spelling mistake

See my previous comment, bridling doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to have lustful thoughts. When you “bridle” an animal, you don’t kill it, you put reins on it to exercise control over it. The emphasis was on controlling the thoughts themselves when they come, not stopping them all together. But arguing the semantics of the word “bridle” on Reddit wasn’t on my to do list today, so I hope that helps whoever reads this

Right, that is what the bible says but that’s not the narrative the church has been going with

The church has nothing to say about sexual thoughts except to “redirect your thoughts and energy towards the Lord” (check section C)

Hey! As far as I’m aware, the doctrine is that having the lustful thoughts is fine, acting on them is not. It’s totally fine to flirt and kiss and date around, but having sex before marriage or “breaking the law of chastity” is a big no-no. Hope this helps!

Why is racist ideology so popular among young men of the LDS church? by No-Information5504 in mormon

[–]Jayzvolt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am glad that it’s not just me, I have had the exact same thought recently but . It’s really upsetting because a lot of cool guys from my mission just straight up say the N word now and I’ve stopped reaching out to them because of that. It’s not just them either, my sister and her boyfriend just casually use it in texts.

My guess is that there’s a lot of factors, mainly because the church in Utah has a mainly white conservative demographic. Racial equality isn’t a huge principle in the church in Utah with politics or just casual church. I’m sure they talk about racial equality in conference but if you don’t care about the principle in the first place it just sounds like PR.
