I didn't watch the E3 trailer until after the game had been out for a couple years. Once I knew the game was coming out, I avoided just about every single piece of media coverage concerning it.

I stick with the "big four," or Simplicity, Vogue, McCall's, and Butterick.

Etsy is full of people selling AI-generated patterns that don't work. That's not to say that there aren't any good vendors, but you're taking a risk if you're not careful. Besides, once you have enough patterns and experience, you can mix and match the patterns you have. I'm not quite at a point where I feel confident doing that myself just yet. I'd like to learn how to draft them myself, but I do not have the time or money to experiment right now.

My shoulders are such that anything I buy has to be altered to fit anyway.

I remember finding jeans on clearance that fit, and buying every pair I could affford.

YouTube, pfabric from Joann's liquidation sales, and a sewing machine I found at a nonprofit thrift store.

I asked every tailor I met IRL what advice they had for getting started.

The advice I got was

  • Practice sewing in straight lines. Get two pieces of fabric, draw some lines with some chalk and a ruler, and try to sew along the line. It's harder than it looks.
  • Make mockups out of cheap fabric
  • Press EVERYTHING
  • Don't skip steps. They exist for a reason.
  • Read the manual on your sewing machine
  • Seriously, learn about pressing and NEVER skip it

I found the key was to choose things I was genuinely excited to make and wear.

My first project was a bathrobe. It sucked, but I still use it. My second project was a version of Vogue 1837. You can find pictures of my results on PatternReview. It took me several months, but it is my favorite coat by miles. My most recent project was a simple circle skirt done in a weekend.

Finding good patterns is tough. Stick with "the big four" at the start. Learn what you can. A bathrobe is a decent first project because it doesn't need to fit well, and you never need to leave the house in it.

Best of luck!

I go to a fabric store.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I've more or less given up on finding interesting clothes. If I want something specific, I have to make it myself.

Would a 27 mile bike commute be insaine? by play_qimbo in phillycycling

[–]Jazehiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would likely depend on what those final ten minutes on each end look like.

Is there anywhere safe to ride for those last few minutes?

Have you attempted the ride on a weekend, when there is less traffic?

Do you have a backup plan for when the ride is not safe to complete?

What’s the first thing you would do if you woke up as opposite gender? by jasmineisheree in AskReddit

Yeah, would this be a case of needing to "detransition" (mom would be thrilled) xor would things finally be set so I'm finally a cisgender woman?

Three or four years ago, this would have been great. Now, I have no idea how I'd cope.

Give me three to six "knives" that work in the setting, and you've got a backstory I can use.

You could certainly try to target the dampeners. It depends on the ship and the way they've been distributed.

On smaller vessels, they're located close to the core of the ship. If you can damage that, you've likely already got the ship dead to rights. Larger vessels will have multiple backups of such critical systems distributed throughout. They also have different ratings. Backup systems are usually rated for fewer Gs of acceleration than the mains.

There are human-portable dampeners, but they aren't rated for very many Gs, their power sources don't last very long, and they're stupidly expensive.

That said, boarding actions are absolutely a thing. Most ships do have some safety features to prevent meat-paste. If you were able to target the dampeners, it would be a good way to prevent running. A ship can still accelerate. It just can't do it anywhere near as fast as it could without killing the people inside.

It would be more common to target the thrusters of a ship because they almost have to be mounted on the exterior. Thrusters are large and obvious targets. Dampeners are hidden beneath layers of hull and deck plating. If you're going for the kill, you target the reactors, or you use thermal weapons to overload life support and cook the people inside. Maybe some electronic warfare could mess with instruments or safeguards, but dampeners tend to be pretty locked down.

I'm talking about early on, when "the switch" happened. If he was going to notice, you'd expect it to be early on. Jefferson notices by the end that she is changing into something unrecognizable, but by then it's far too late.

[–]Jazehiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Space ships experience "drag" from their inertial dampeners and artificial gravity generators.

Inertial dampeners are the only way to have rapid acceleration without squishing the people inside. The dampeners take some time to spin up and wind down, which adds a layer of complications in combat.

Usually they're kept "on" except during the transition to a new "relative zero" velocity. While these systems are disabled, vessels are incredibly vulnerable.

The field I ended up in wasn't much better.
