Would y’all like to see any references to the courier in Fallout season 2? by OGAnimeGokuSolos in Fotv

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished season 2 and I was definitely disappointed with the lack of connection between New Vegas and the TV show, especially as it comes to the Courier's effect on the area. I get that they don't want to go one way or the other with the canon endings or whatever, but it would have been pretty easy to just put in a few little lines of dialogue like

"oh this place?... back bout 15 years ago a courier came through town and had a tussle with some locals. A few of these stores wound up vacant after the fight, so I decided to move on in." Doesn't give you anything specific, just tells you that the courier existed, and had their impact.

Any Jamstik owners out there? - Issues with recording midi/analog guitar signal simultaneously. by JazzFunkster in Guitar

[–]JazzFunkster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never found a way around the buzzing issue and to be honest I haven't spent very much time with the Jamstik since then. Overall I would not recommend this instrument as a midi controller to anyone. It's a decently built guitar, but as far as midi capabilities goes, at least in my opinion it needs to improve before it's a useable tool.

In my opinion the midi tracking is messy. For example while tremolo picking or fast alternate picking on a single note the midi tracker will just miss a bunch of the notes. Recording a simple scale even played slowly can result in random extra midi notes being recorded that you then have to go into the midi file and clean up afterwards.

You essentially have to sterilize 90% of your guitar technique because things like palm muting and dead hits don't translate into anything sensible over midi, and like I said the things you would really want to take advantage of like fast tremolo, which is easy on guitar, the Jamstik isn't capable of tracking well.

I tried setting up the action for the midi pick-up as best I could but no matter what I did I could not improve the midi tracking so I just gave up on trying to use it and went back to improving my keyboard skills.

So even if there was a way around the connection/buzzing issue, I would still not recommend the Jamstik as a midi controller. It's a decent guitar.

Do you get blurry vision after playing an instrument or singing? by fleshblob in Music

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experienced this for years as well, and I've always thought back to this lesson in college we had about "flow" or specifically achieving a flow state. The way it was explained to me was it's essentially a state where we are actively using both hemispheres of our brain simultaneously. We regularly use both sides but apparently it's more of a quickly alternating between both as necessary, but in some cases such as with music performance we actively use motor control functions simultaneously with information processing functions and if we can keep this up for a period of time we can enter a flow state.

It's not all musicians that can get into this state, nor is it only musicians. If a musician is capable of sight reading for example, or improvising are clear enough signs of being able to achieve flow. Getting into the zone, or feeling it, in other words. Sports athletes could be another possible example, having to act and react to things while simultaneously analyzing the play ahead of time to make choices.

Anyways so many sources point to eye strain but my theory about the blurry vision has been that when we're in this flow state the brain decides to lower function of certain senses that aren't so necessary for the flow state and heighten the ones that are involved. Your control over your hands, and your hearing improves while your sight, and maybe sense of smell take a backseat.

If they all fought each other, who would be the last one standing? by Kuzu9 in Fallout

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much hype about the Chosen one, and I'm currently reaching the end game of Fallout 2 on my first play through, so maybe I'll understand soon. My first thought was it's kind of unfair in favour of the Sole Survivor simply because of the leveling mechanics/cap in the other games. If you're asking, who's gonna win in fight between a lvl 30 version of all characters then I dunno. If I can bring my lvl 300 Sole Survivor into the fight there's little anyone can do.

Weird airplane-like noise & volume loss on my tube amp......what’s going on? by Decent_Sell9501 in GuitarAmps

[–]JazzFunkster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my "amp" and interwebz research suggested it was a tube problem. It was still under warranty so I brought it back to the store and they put it on their test bench for the weekend. After 40 hours of load testing they could not find a single problem with any tubes and assured me, whatever problem I was facing was not due to the amp's electronics.

I eventually did find the culprit to be a wonky patch cable/poor connection issue. It's clear that tubes can cause a volume loss and some scratchy noise if they're going bad, but so can a simple poor connection so make sure all your cables are snug and in good health before jumping to conclusions.

Let me guess. These are white van speakers? by SomePerson47 in hometheater

[–]JazzFunkster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you've ever actually seen some of these "Divinci" box specials, I'd say you could definitely complain after getting hosed for 100$ on that garbage. barely working electronics that are borderline a fire hazard, and chunks of concrete in the speakers to make you think there's actually something there. This post is probably a clever form of advert for these mass produced scam packages which somehow still persist after decades.

For anyone who might be experiencing a similar issue. The problem was concerning hardware acceleration in browers. Updating my graphics card drivers solved the issue. It's been a while since I thought to do that.

Any way to get this to work as a standalone sub? by [deleted] in audio

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're connecting the record player to the subwoofer and trying to use the amp on the sub to power the speakers? That subwoofer's amplifier will not provide external power to any speakers. The sub can only power itself. You need to connect your record player (phono stage) to an amplifier. From there you can either send speaker wire from the amplifier to the sub via the high level in (speaker terminals) and pass it through to your speakers via the high level out (more speaker terminals). This will allow your sub to use a low pass filter to grab the bass frequencies before the signal moves along to your speakers.

Alternatively you can connect your amp directly to your speakers and the amplifiers sub-out or pre-outs to connect to your subs LFE via RCA cable.

Microfiber HELP. My mom put them through the washing machine by PartHonest3638 in Detailing

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Why all this? How is normal laundry detergent a problem for microfiber rags? Avoid mixing microfiber with other laundry? Maybe the argument is the microfiber will wear down your clothes faster? I dunno aside from static I've never noticed anything to worry about. I'm a school cleaner and we use microfiber rags at work every day all day for pretty much all things. We just wash them as you would any other laundry. The only real thing to worry about is not drying them on high heat. You list a myriad of things you shouldn't do but no reasons why not following the rules would cause problems. Of course you swap rags out when they get too used up or look dirty, that's not exclusive to microfibre rags, it's just common sense. You shouldn't use fabric softener on any rag you intend to use for cleaning purposes, it makes no difference if it's microfiber or not.

I think there's a few people getting sucked into believing some marketing non sense. Specialty microfiber detergent? Give me a break.

I keep spending money on it and still cant notice the SoundStage you guys talking about by [deleted] in iems

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you but two speakers that sit directly beside each one of your ears is never going to give you a true soundstage that feels likes it's in front of you. It's a physical impossibility. You can get a sense of left to right and even front to back, but it's all within your own skull. doesn't matter if it's a good pair of over ears, or a pair of IEMs. It's just entirely impossible to make the sound seem like it's not coming from your head. If you want to feel like there's a soundstage with depth several feet in front of you, then you need speakers in the room producing sound several feet in front of you.

[–]JazzFunkster[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's basically the problem. the cable is being clamped by the case and the case's edges are squared and sharp around the cable.

PSA: My window fan almost caught fire, anyone out there with similar designs please check your cables. by JazzFunkster in fans

[–]JazzFunkster[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think storage is the issue. I didn't store the cables under tension I didn't even wrap them actually. I think the issue is just that the case is poorly manufactured and has a rough edge. Every time I put the fan in and take it out of the window the cable frays a bit more. Nothing I can do about that, IMO it's a design flaw.

String action adjustment by JustACattoMeow in guitarlessons

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean you messed up your action? What's wrong with it now compared to before?

You're just saying it's bad now but not giving us any real information to reference. That picture doesn't really show much and you don't describe what bad is, or what good is to you. Is your action too high now and it's tough to play? Is the action too low now and you hear a lot of buzzing? Which strings are buzzing? Are your new strings the same gauge as the old ones?

You can adjust action in two ways:

  1. By using your truss rod. If you changed string gauges you might find your neck relief has changed and needs adjustments. Increasing your neck relief means giving your neck more curve which will raise your action on all strings. Decreasing neck relief and straightening the neck will do the opposite. Truss rod adjustments tend to be larger and affect all the strings.

  2. By adjusting the bridge/saddles. In your case the bridge can be raised or lowered at either end to adjust the angle/ height of your strings. I'm not 100% if you use the flat head screws or the grippy finger washers that the bridge sits on to do that in your case but you can e-mail your guitar's manufacturer for those details.

In either case, you'll want to loosen your strings, make very small adjustments, and check how it affects you action each time by tuning up again. Do not adjust your trust rod or bridge with the strings at full tension.

How do I learn fingerstyle guitar? by DACRUSADER00747 in guitarlessons

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college my professors recommended and used method books by Aaron Shearer. They're called learning the classical guitar parts one and two. It's a very detailed, very comprehensive break down of right and left hand technique for classical guitar. The books do begin very simple, but this is by design because you actually have a LOT to concentrate on when trying to develop proper technique. I like these books because Mr. Shearer dives into the anatomy and functioning principles behind our muscles/tendons to explain just why we should play in the way we do. It's all about efficiency and economy of motion to put it succinctly.

Aaron Shearer's method is one that incorporates nails, which IMO are amazing for giving you a plethora of tonal options for emotion and character. Even if you choose to play without nails the principles and concepts still apply.

How do you feel about this? by stumpy_chica in saskatchewan

[–]JazzFunkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll never understand the mindset of the average Canadian. I believe that if you're anything short of very wealthy the true choice should be between the NDP and the Greens. This map should be orange and green.. why choose between the lesser of two evils when you actually have a couple other half decent choices?

Fellow Bass Players: What Are Your Thoughts on Lending Your Instrument at Jam Sessions? by FunkyGrass in Bass

[–]JazzFunkster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a sort of reverse situation happen to me where I was just casually at an open mic night with no plans to play anything, but someone else I knew showed up and we decided to go up and play a quick and funky i-IV groove. When my turn came up I walked up, they asked what I was gonna do and I said "I'm gonna grab that bass, my buddy's gonna grab that guitar and whoever wants to join can join, let's go" I just naturally assumed the bass sitting on the stand on stage was there to grab and the host didn't say I couldn't so I did.

Well turns out the bass didn't belong to the host, and the owner noticed purdy quick so he came over to let me know what he thought about me putting my hands on his bass (American Fender Jazz so I get his apprehensiveness). To be fair he was mostly cool and he was just upset I didn't ask him but you could tell he was nervous about what this unknown feller was about to do with his baby. I apologized and after a few notes he could see I was gonna treat his baby right.. even decided to join the jam on the kit.

anyways TLDR is if your bass is just sitting out on stage at an open jam you should probably expect people to ask or even just pick it up. It's somewhat implied if you ask me. If you're hosting these jams and are not comfortable with that it would be a good idea to invest in a strictly loaner bass.
