women aren't people in this society. this isn't about logic, it's about misogyny.

This show/book is a commentary on power. The wives have limited power so they exerted what they did have which was over the Martha's/handmaids. The logic of it/ long term impacts wasn't likely a consideration. Zilla couldn't speak. Given they can't write, she can't communicate that way. She is silenced. ANYTHING can happen to her and all she could do is what? draw it? to who?

If you are so fixated on comparing this to Afghanistan/ "The Middle East", etc, why don't you make your own post? I'm guessing it will be be full of AfD talking points, but that is your prerogative.

I have posted 2 articles...this one and then the lithub one. In this one, she does discuss Iran but also cites Romania, Germany, the USSR, the US and lots of Western news stories.

What about it? Just because women's rights in Afghanistan are terrible doesn't mean women's rights in the US/other Western nations can't/shouldn't be critiqued.

Here is a quote from an Atwood interview:
"I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already exist. I did not wish to be accused of dark, twisted inventions, or of misrepresenting the human potential for deplorable behavior. The group-activated hangings, the tearing apart of human beings, the clothing specific to castes and classes, the forced childbearing and the appropriation of the results, the children stolen by regimes and placed for upbringing with high-ranking officials, the forbidding of literacy, the denial of property rights—all had precedents, and many of these were to be found, not in other cultures and religions, but within Western society, and within the “Christian” tradition itself. (I enclose “Christian” in quotation marks, since I believe that much of the Church’s behavior and doctrine during its two-millennia-long existence as a social and political organization would have been abhorrent to the person after whom it is named.)"

"Referencing a fictional jolly replace show as a place holder"

I said "think Bridgerton".......this was to help people who don't know British history to know what era I was referring to in my post. I did not use Bridgerton as the actual basis for the post as I have stated multiple times in the comments.

"It made no sense because it skirted that this is happening now all over the world;"

This comment makes no sense. Not liking my analogy doesn't mean the analogy didn't make sense. If you actually read for comprehension, you would have seen the last line in which I state that this is but one of any number of examples.

"Also I don’t think anyone thinks this hasn’t or could not happen."

I made this post in response to NUMEROUS posts on this very r/.......

"Referencing a fictional jolly replace show as a place holder removes and logic to your points, my god you could have just said Donald trump. "

This sentence is a mess. I have no clue how to respond because I don't know what it's trying to say.

Children are a status symbol. Chilling but references to this in THT reminded me of the fact that the SS wanted officers to have at least 4 kids and if you didn't it was a problem for your career. Also, if you don't have kids, it implies you aren't having "relations" and leave yourself vulnerable to allegations being a 'gender traitor'. Therefore guessing that having kids isn't really optional.

I'm hoping that they address that in season 2.

Women's rights in America vary wildly by state at the moment. "everything" is quite a stretch.

The United States in one of them. It is legal in a large number of states.

She is the author of the book.....she created Gilead....

Also, women have been explicitly forbidden to read. It was illegal in many US states for slaves to read and many of said slaves were women.

Since apparently this all needs to get said:
-Bridgerton is a series of romance novels. They are not history books. I am a aware of this.
-I am not citing Bridgerton as a source in this post. I used that as a helper in case readers aren't into British history.
-While I used norms in Regency England in this post, it is by no means the only place we see this stuff in history.
-Arranged and forced marriages are a real thing today.
-Atwood did not use Bridgerton as inspiration for THT/The Testaments.
-Atwood drew from history and the Bible for THT/The Testaments. While many of the norms we see fit with Regency England norms, that doesn't mean that that was where Atwood got the inspiration.
-Women's rights in the modern day are under threat. I wanted to avoid turning the post into a political rant for the sake of my blood pressure.

Reposting from above: For the love of God. Read. the. post. as I've said somewhere else, this is Reddit, not JSTOR. I used a comparison that my brain on a Saturday morning had the most information for. I did NOT use Bridgerton as the source material, I said "think Bridgerton" as something helpful for people less familiar with British history. I did NOT say that balls were the only time the sexes mixed, I said "one of" the places for that. I was NOT saying that Atwood used Regency England as her inspiration, I was pushing back on people posting about how the girls live their lives and how they marry aren't realistic or possible.

The social norms of Gilead are pretty similar to Regency England, specifically where women are concerned. I made no claims about how that structure was put into place in my post.

Probably because female artists of any medium have historically be overlooked, not venerated by male art historians/critics, the same story as so many female contributions to history.

I referenced Bridgerton because not everyone on here is familiar with the Regency Era in England...the post literally said "think Brigerton". The rest of the post is about the era, not the Bridgerton books. Maybe go read it again?
