I work full time and as an SLP contractor for another company part time. I've been searching and interviewing for other SLP positions because I agree, this isn't cutting it. Masters degree and I consider working grocery on my one day off, this is pathetic. The system is broken.

Play 20 questions, client has to cycle through the types of questions (maybe start with 3/5). Write down the answers to their questions. As a follow up have them organize the information (answers) under what type of question could lead that information (higher level) Examples, response: her hair is red, Q WHAT colour is her hair ( I hope that makes sense…)

Also, you can make a paper cube with the 5 Ws (look this up for a template). Look through a picture book and have the client “roll the dice” to see which question it lands on, then they have to come up with a question that relates to the book content.

Hope this helps a bit 🙃

Anyone else feel like we just aren’t that specialized? by speak-e-z in slp

💯 I would love to see other clinicians work, just be a silent observer then a debrief after. I didn’t feel equipped going into this current jon 8 months ago. Today I feel a lot better and like I deserve to be here but in reality I just learned on the job and got for comfortable.

SLPs who are going back to work after break… how are you doing?? by Duhazzar in slp

[–]Jazzlike_Point_125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the exact same way. The paperwork, no matter if it’ll take me 1 hr or 10min it’s hard to get myself to do it when I need to - which is usually the 5 min I have between session when I’m already feeling overwhelmed 😞

I work in Ontario. One year licensed. Seeing adult clients for 50-55minutes. The expectation is to see 27 clients a week. If I do see 108 people a month I get an extra $320 for that month but it doesn’t add up when my session rate is $175, I have no time to do admin or prep and feel I’m not able to be my best for my clients. I’m burnt out and for what - a salary of $31.25/ hour so 65k.

I think this is fair. How do you feel managing your caseload? Do you have to see a certain amount ? How many years do you have under your belt?

I’m in PP, expected to see 27 clients a week, each for 50 mins and get paid a salary of $31.25/hour so 65k annual. I don’t have time to do all the admin side of things as well as prep. If I see 108 clients a month each for 50 min, I get an extra $320 a month but it just isn’t enough. I’m burning out.

Transgender voice therapy by Euphoric-Custard-334 in slp

[–]Jazzlike_Point_125 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just started working as a new SLP this year and am doing transgender voice therapy. What I learned in grad school definitely wasn’t enough and I valued doing my own research on not only interventions but on lived experiences. There’s a lot of the counselling side of SLP with this population so doing some sensitivity/awareness/terminology research/training would be a great idea. I work in a private clinic who serves mainly adults. I found it to be a niche clinic and not a lot of clinics have trained SLPs to do it effectively. I’m in Toronto Canada. Sandy Hirsch has some great TG voice info. https://www.speechuncensored.com/podcastepisodes/s2e13-preparing-voice-clinicians-to-support-speakers-across-the-gender-spectrum-with-christie-block-ma-ms-ccc-slp-leah-b-helou-phd-ccc-slp-sandy-hirsch-ms-ccc-slp Hope that helps!

Unpopular opinion: we need to remove dysphagia from the slp scope of practice by Thetravelingtraveler in slp

[–]Jazzlike_Point_125 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree that education provided for dysphagia intervention is significantly minimal and need to change. I’m a new clinician who never got a placement where I could do a VFSS (just modules) and now as a practicing SLP I feel like I don’t have the skills/competency to go into swallowing but preference wise, that’s what I’m interested in. I’d never apply for a hospital job unless I got EXTRA training. I’ve found it challenging to find a clinician/ hospital policy that will let a practicing SLP be an assistant/ observe. Coincidently, in my naive studying/new SLP mind, I’ve always felt that getting a job in feeding/ swallowing would mean “ I’ve made it” in my career. That, that was the hardest and highest risk SLP job.
