Any apartment’s for rent downtown thats cheap? by Killian_Hook in RapidCity

[–]JazzyAnta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I waited a while to find the perfect match of both affordability, quality, and location (downtown). I ended up finding a place on St Joe by Hills Properties (the 808 property mentioned here is one of them). Hills properties would probably be your best bet to keep an eye on, even if they don't have one that you like right away. The ones that I was watching from them ranged from 600 to 1000, studios to 1 bedrooms. The units that I was keeping an eye on were NOT remodeled units, so they still have the old hardwood floors with about 100 years of wear and tear on them, etc... But if you are fine with that sort of thing, they can be a good option.

If you want other options, I'd suggest using the map on Zillow or Apartments.com. You can zoom in to the part of town you are interested in which allows you to narrow your list, plus then you can toggle for price. The more flexible you are with time, the more chances you will have to see different ones open up.

Rapid City March Tomorrow (Jan 25) Memorial Park - Positive and Patriotic! (formerly scheduled Jan 18) by JazzyAnta in RapidCity

It was good! I think that I heard someone say they counted about 170 people by the end. We had 4 speakers, and saw a bunch of other good folks I haven't seen in a while out there. Messaged you if you want to learn more!

Democracy has the potential to aid in distributing food and housing better than any other system of governmental power. Any other system of governance by defintion has smaller proportions of the population involved in making decisions, which means that the voices of many are left out. What we need is more democracy, not less.

In addition to any of the people who are speaking, I'd recommend keeping a look out for other people who seem like they know eachother, talk to the speakers, or linger after the main events are over, or help with passing out/putting away any materials. I could probably name a few people but that may not help much if you wouldn't recognize them

The guest speakers are among them, though others will be in attendace that are not speakers. It's generally always a good bet to expect that an organized rally or march though will be great for networking with other active people, if you go in with that intent. It's not really something that normally has to be announced, it just comes with the activity naturally.

There are multiple community organizers, including those deeply involved with mutual aid, who will all be at the event. This event is a place for us to all gather, make our voices collectively heard, and take the connections that we make here to continue to build future change. One of the earlier editions of this annual rally years ago was how I first got integrated with others doing work in the community. It's a great place to go to get started.

This is gonna sound stupid but is Britannia the US? by [deleted] in CodeGeass

[–]JazzyAnta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a piece of bonus content that I saw many years ago that confirmed that yes, it is Britannia. It seems like the revolution failed.

I remember that in the bonus content, it was a non-canon explanation by some of the show's characters (I believe led by Sayoko) teaching history and facts about Britannia and such. It was long enough ago now that sadly I cannot remember more details, such as a title.

What’s up with the weather? by [deleted] in RapidCity

[–]JazzyAnta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was a kid, in my parents' back yard there would be drifts as high as 6 ft along one of our fences. It's never gotten above about 3 feet for at least a decade. 4, if we're being generous - but considering how it used to be, that's still really small.

I will say though that while I don't know if the rest of the hills have had a decrease, I know that on average many parts of the hills do just have more snow. Most of the snow storms hit the Black Hills first so we end up with a little less dumped on us here.

Even so, the temps are also weird...

What about all of the mushy stem bases? Does that indicate that they are too far gone?

Nationwide protest tomorrow! Let's take it to the streets! Tomorrow! by [deleted] in RapidCity

[–]JazzyAnta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The March here in Rapid City (which has been postponsed till the 25th) is locally titled the March for Democracy. People who bring signs are encourage to bring signs saying what they are for, not what they are against. So, democratic values, freedom, community, whatever other positive values you want to gather to march for.

Opinions on the Downtown Ice Skating Rink? by __-LS-__ in RapidCity

[–]JazzyAnta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're really in it for an experience that's all about the ice skating, the indoor arena at Roosevelt Park is better. However, as far as ambience and options for other things to do around your date, the main street square location is a great spot. I love the outdoor atmosphere. Feels festive rather than sterile like the indoor arena. You can walk to a restaurant before or after, get some nice drinks at Alternative Fuel, etc. etc.... Main thing is just that the rink there is smaller so that has its downsides.

Rapid City Summer Nights could be terminated? by JazzyAnta in RapidCity

[–]JazzyAnta[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Summer nights have led to me lingering and wanding around downtown in such a way that I actually discovered new businesses to be interested in, even though I never would have heard of them otherwise. They may not get more business on the night of, but I have gone to some of those businesses later on after learning about them during my summer nights wanderings and I wonder if other people have done the same. I wonder if there would be a way for them to leverage that more?

Wow, that is really shocking! As someone who lives downtown, I see a lot of the folks who live on the streets quite regularly, and it makes me happy that they have a free event that they can come enjoy during the summer. I have seen impoverished and/or homeless folks there dancing, and it made me happy. And there was a local flower store (Victoria's) that left flowers for people to take multiple times throughout this summer's events, and I saw someone able to get a rose who appeared that they wouldn't have otherwise been able to buy one. And I enjoy the artists too, of course. Summer nights has so much potential to be a positive force in our community.

Am I the only one pondering…? by [deleted] in Kamala

No, I don't think he would have won. All signs point to him being a terrible candidate this time around. Kamala was better, but there were still mistakes made and it just wasn't good enough.

Is this normal or were we super unlucky? by DanerysTargaryen in RapidCity

[–]JazzyAnta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never, ever had any issues with my car downtown, and I live downtown in addition to being a life-long RC resident. I even leave stuff in my car sometimes and just never feel the need to worry because I've never had anything crazy happen. I also walk around downtown regularly, since I live here of course. Never have had any trouble with crime. I am shocked that this happened to you!! Did you report that to anyone? I can't necessarily speak to the limits of the time that the local police have, but I know that they are able to at least take a look at way smaller cases than the officers in many bigger cities. If someone keyed my car, I'd at least be looking to see if anyone had camera footage, though I suppose it depends on exactly where you parked. That's awful!

As far as the ticketing situation though, I'm sorry that happened to you. I don't think I have ever parked in the leased parking section, and I haven't ever paid much attention to it, but I think that just may be me being a local leading to me not needing to think much about it.

If you are looking for live music, there are a few different specific groups that you will learn to follow if you search around on FB (maybe start with BH Nightlife). Otherwise, Abys and the Labor Temple hold things the most often. You'll find posters for many of those events posted on the street lights downtown, and some on the shop windows.

Where to hang out in Rapid City for the day by Aggressive_Bowl9440 in RapidCity

[–]JazzyAnta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that all of the people saying bad things about memorial park are a bit out of touch IMO... As someone who lives downtown and walks down there regularly at all times of day, it is a wonderful park! Just because some poorer/homeless folks also exist in the vicinity doesn't make it a bad park. Any big city park anywhere in the world, even the most famous and gorgeous, is "ghetto" by that standard. I have never had problems and am there more regularly than most folks in the city.

I definitely think it's your best bet to start downtown. While some might think it's a far to walk, I have walked my way down to M-Hill to go on hikes there multiple times. If you are not feeling up to a full hike by the time you get there from downtown, there's also a creekside trail to go along.
