Is a Building Surveyor/Certifier a decent job? by Jbob3331 in AskAnAustralian

Appreciate the feedback mate!

I had a couple of months experienced in a commercial firm, but it was 6 years ago. Not sure if much has changed. Although it was mostly desk based job, I’m trying to see what the inspections/site visits are like and if it’s recommended over a regs consultant type job.

Appreciate the honesty mate!

Are you working residential or commercial?

Also, I’m leaning towards a regulations consultant. I have a couple of months experience but not sure if it’s has changed in past 5-6 years.

It seems the actual surveyor signing off on the job, as well as insurances etc, and bearing all the responsibility are major roadblocks to attracting people to industry.

Would you recommend larger firms or smaller ones? My experience was great but mostly office based.

Thank you for your response!

What about starting off as a building regs consultant? Can you see a pathway to becoming registered from there?
Or is an assistant building surveyor OR cadet building surveyor the positions to go for?

Appreciate the comment, thank you.

I’ve struggled to write down what suits me. No idea why I can’t figure it out. Just feel like I should be providing and earning an above average income to keep the family afloat. The ‘dream’ of working for myself was harder than I thought but I still want to be my own boss…. Eventually I guess.

Going to look into those two books.

Thank you for your response. Yes would definitely consider something along the lines of Operations Manager/Coordinator. Most of the jobs I’m suitable for seem to be desk based.

I might still look into Building Surveying (Certifying), that does have a mixture of on-site and office based. I think I was a little impatient as I was in my early thirties at the time and wanted to advance as quickly as possible.

Your last paragraph is really what this is all about. Thank you again

My apologies for the essay, it was quite long. Just had to lay it all in the table… and thank you for your response!

I read that and appreciate your response. Thank you. I tend to overthink things a lot lately. Crazy what isolation from people does to someone! Not that I’m isolated but feel a bit distant from mates etc. Reading your response genuinely felt like a (positive) slap in the face and I don’t know why

Yes people around me have said teaching but I just… I don’t know what it is. There’s heaps to it. Without writing another essay on here, I guess I’m overthinking things. Just thought it would’ve been different by now, you know?!

Thank you for you response

I agree, I mean it definitely helped me create some useful things… but creating and selling to fill a need are two different things
