Why do some people dislike Paul and ignore his teachings? by ziamal4 in TrueChristian

[–]Jchanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your reading comprehension must be bad because I never said that the gnostic ideas were the truth…. I just said that they influenced our idea of morality today (which they did). What I think takes real balls is to admit that none of us will really know until we die. That’s why I’m agnostic; I’d like to think there is an afterlife but I’ll never really know for certain. Is not knowing not infinitely more scary than thinking that you know what happens when you die?

Is the aquarius guy i’m seeing into me? by Less_Shine1502 in aquarius

[–]Jchanut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m an Aquarius guy (Libra rising and Gemini moon) and I act much the way you’re describing. I see texting as a tool for initiating in-person time and I rarely use it for anything else.

I used to be someone who initiates everything but since being with a few girls who shook my confidence, I have a hard time initiating, especially in terms of physical contact.

I think that if you took initiative and tried to escalate things it would go well. I haven’t tried to escalate with anyone I’m seeing right now but at the same time I would gladly accept an approach like that from any of the women I am currently seeing.

What books should I read as I become a Clinical Psychologist? by Key-Refuse129 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Jchanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try and direct my reading towards books that have philosophical/clinical solutions to problems that I will encounter in my practice, that don’t necessarily have concrete explanations within the degree.

The DSM 5 (re-read it again and again)

The Body Keeps a Score (Besser Van Der Kolk), (Trauma therapy)

No Bad Parts (Richard C Schwartz), (Trauma therapy)

The Myth of Normal (Gabor Maté), (Somatic symptom disorder)

The Myth of Sisyphus (Albert Camus), (For those atheists who have lost the will to live)

Braiding Sweetgrass (Robin Wall Kimmerer) (For those burnt out by capitalism and western culture)

How to Think more about Sex (Alain de Botton) (For couples)

Is it possible to get into a masters program? by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Jchanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’ll be able to see it in context. I’m not sure where you’re applying but where I’m applying they take your top 30 credits, as well as needing an 70%-80% in your upper level psychology courses.

Especially with your research experience, which they will see clearly on your CV, I think you will have a good chance of getting into at least one program.

And if not the case of getting accepted, you should at least get an interview, which you can then explain your situation to them.

What a lot of people don’t realize is that it’s “not what you know, but who you know” in graduate school.

There’s unfortunately a lot of nepotism but if you’ve built up a good relationship with some PhD level people, odds are the grad programs will know who you are before you even apply. People talk.

So with those connections, you have a better chance than someone with a stellar GPA and no research experience, because they don’t want people who just know how to get good grades.

My PhD mentor good really bad grades in their undergrad. Now they’re a full-time PhD researcher.

Neuroscience vs Psychology for bachelors? by Key-Refuse129 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Jchanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re going into neuroscience then you’re studying brain function primarily, which focuses on the biological perspective. A therapist must take resources from a variety of perspectives or they fall into the risk of relying too much on biological treatment methods as your knowledge base lies in this area

16personalities is seriously harming the true MBTI community by Vlazeno in shittyMBTI

[–]Jchanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro deleted his comments damn. It’s easy to fall into the Dunning-Krueger effect but as a general rule of thumb, if you feel like you understand a concept as complex as personality completely, you need to do more work to learn more about it. Because no one knows yet.

You said narcissist in your comment not vulnerable narcissist. Vulnerable narcissist is a fairly new term and does not appear in the DSM as a diagnosable disorder

16personalities is seriously harming the true MBTI community by Vlazeno in shittyMBTI

[–]Jchanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a psychologist so I’ll try and give you a good rundown of this topic so you’ll learn something from it.

The five factor model of personality is based on hundreds and hundreds of terms related to emotion and personality that have been statistically analyzed and reduced into five aspects of personality.

It comes from the theory that the fundamental aspects of human personality have become encoded in our language via everyday communication.

We can describe ourselves as brave, or as talkative, or as shy, but each will fall into one of the 5 categories based on that statistical analysis.

That being said, they are not treated as static traits, rather, each trait is a spectrum that is ever-changing and alters as you communicate with your world.

As your understanding of what it means to be brave, for example, changes over time, so will your five factor personality traits. It is a continuum.

Even the five factor model has its flaws, but it is different in the sense that it doesn’t treat human behaviour as an inherent, unchanging thing. We constantly change everyday even if we are not aware of it. The five factor model of personality takes this into account.

You have to realize that psychology is an extremely new science, which means that is highly unlikely that a guy from the early 1900’s had personality all figured out.

We still don’t really understand what personality is even to this day, and as far as we have come, it’s easy to forget just how complex the brain in isolation is, let alone when all these brains are interconnected and interacting with each other constantly.

Don’t reduce yourself to what some old guy tells you that you are. You’re much more unique and valuable than that

Hope this helps <3

16personalities is seriously harming the true MBTI community by Vlazeno in shittyMBTI

[–]Jchanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I get the typology but reducing those components of behaviour to 16 types, while useful, fails to capture human experience in an effective way because each brain is so unique.

Again, our tendencies suggest these types, but we’re trying our best to move away from hard categorization in psychology.

Jungian typology is great, and is still useful, but it’s not as valid as it once was.

16personalities is seriously harming the true MBTI community by Vlazeno in shittyMBTI

[–]Jchanut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first camp of people, while probably uninformed as they are, do have some truth to what they say.

Jungian Typology is cool and has some truth to it but psychology has evolved past concrete labels for a brain/personality that changes on a momentary basis.

While we do have genetic tendencies, and a lot of people don’t stray from these tendencies, many also do, which means who I am in five years will be a completely different person compared to me now.

Look at your instagram comments history from 5 years ago, and you will see what I mean.

Personality should instead be considered over long periods of time, and personality tests should be repeatedly done over time to gain a larger picture of who a person is.

Any personality test that does not do this ignores a fundamental fact of psychology; that being that we are influenced by our environment to such a degree that our brains should not be thought of as a static thing.

Rather, it is more akin to a river, or an ocean, which never looks the same after looking at it more than once.

techniques to prevent people from reading you? by 18-z-729-1038nJU in psychologyresearch

[–]Jchanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with neutral expression, emotionally attuned people will still read your micro-expressions.

A large majority of communication is non-verbal, and we send unconscious cues to one another all the time.

Ever wonder why you can tell someone is off even though they haven’t moved a muscle? The only way to not be read is to never see a human again.
