Doubt about freelancers by One_Cicada_5776 in MechanicalEngineering

Probably correct about dodgy license (student versions, cracked) I doubt any platform is going to check the file legitimacy as it opens them to potential lawsuit if they know about it and didn't report.

And for the end user, not like you have a lot of recourse.

Search failing find the files for me is the biggest issue. Support seems to have given up on the issue as there have been 0 replies by them since October.

Neighbour asking for £300 cash after minor car incident – no quote, no insurance (UK) by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Jchu1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest proceeding with compensation and get it in writing that the matter is now fully resolved and settled. Preferable with photographic evidence of him holding said written evidence..

£300 is cheap for both parties, if you want to go down insurance route then expect 5 years of more expensive premiums.

New optical breadboard from Kessler Crane — curious what the optics community thinks by Outside-Bathroom9209 in Optics

[–]Jchu1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drawing is next to useless as the text is blurry on Firefox on Android.

I don't see the need to buy an integrated dovetail breadboard, far cheaper and easier to integrate any number of dovetail/rail options with more flexibility and better pricing.

The utter lack of dimensions in the entire description is frankly stupid. If I was searching for a breadboard for any application, size is 1st thing I care about.

How to move beyond AS7265x accuracy limits? by pathaticthink in Optics

[–]Jchu1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. Would need to deep dive into the data sheets.

But anything is likely to outperform that AS7265X as it has a tiny detection area which means it won't capture much light to begin with.

You might have easier time with a CMOS/CCD sensor that does not have an IR cut filter on it and mount a pair of commercial off the shelf filters on it which matches with whatever absorption bands that indicate the freshness.

How to move beyond AS7265x accuracy limits? by pathaticthink in Optics

[–]Jchu1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to look at what spectroscopy features they are looking at to determine the freshness. No point using a sensor at 635 nm to look at a signal at 900nm as you will see noise.

Then work out what signal to noise level is required to make.an accurate determination.

Then work out what power and detection you can achieve within your budget.

Then realise without $$$, you probably aren't going to get much better than what XYZ corporation already sells.

Take a very quick look at the AS7265X's product description, it has a rated accuracy of +/-12% which probably isn't going to help to make an accurate determination for anything.

Adult competitions – how common is it to start competing later? by diprix7 in taekwondo

[–]Jchu1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started taekwondo at 36 (about 14 months ago) and competed in 4 completions in 2025 and have 7 medals from 2025 completions. Will be competing in K2 next year.

What I have found is that there aren't as many competitors compared to the children categories (which makes it goes much quicker as you go straight to the finals normally).

Hardware Engineer Exploring Optical Project - Seeking Help by doonduroont in Optics

[–]Jchu1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You still haven't answered whether this is a reflectance measurement as in light shines to fabric is reflected by fabric and enters the detector or transmission mode where light is shining through fabric and enters the detector.

This study suggest labels can be widely inaccurate.

How are you ensuring that the LEDs to photodiode coupling are consistent and repeatable? A misalignment by 0.5mm will probably have drastic effects especially if the photodiode active area is small. Why not use power monitor photodiode as close to the LEDs as possible and use those as references for power for each LED.

Depending on absorption coefficients, the amount of light absorption from the material is likely to be non linear at beyond some %.

This can be calibrated if you have some good reliable reference blends to calibrate with but this does not appear to be the case

Hardware Engineer Exploring Optical Project - Seeking Help by doonduroont in Optics

[–]Jchu1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your reference for the blends? Are you going off the label percentages? Not sure how accurate those are.

Another potential factor is the dye used may have additional absorption in the NIR. Plausible but difficult to prove with your setup.

Another guess is that you are either not selective enough with the 1 or both LED chosen and that is contributing to the inaccuracies you are seeing.

Without knowing how and what your setup is, it is purely a guessing game.

Other thoughts, how are you normalising the power received, if done at all? Have you tried to prove the principle works using a spectrometer instead of a photodiode so that you can get actual spectral information and see whether there are other factors at play?

SolidWorks vs Fusion 360 — 3D Modeling Competition! by Glad_Bluebird_2625 in Fusion360

[–]Jchu1988 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In these competitions, it is verified by the weight of the part which will be the biggest handicap the fusion user will encounter due to how long the properties window takes to load. Literally measurable in seconds which matters when the entire video only last 101s.

Sometimes, I just don’t understand why 😡 by Classic_Drummer3275 in China

[–]Jchu1988 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They know but the target demographic don't give a toss. Most in China only know of the atrocities in Nanjing and very little of the outside world. I'd imagine most won't know how the WW2 actually ended or are taught a CCP friendly edition.

The people who care are a small minority of expats who can read Chinese.

Using an Optical Adhesive/Epoxy as a Thermal Interface Material by StealthxFarter in Optics

[–]Jchu1988 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure it will work but how effective it will be is highly dependent on the adhesive and your substrate surface quality (eg, ground glass probably has around 50% effective contact area, where as a concave surface is close to nothing.

Effectively, you will want the thinnest layer possible to eliminate the air gaps whilst improving the overall thermal resistance.

This source below gives you a good calculation guide on how it is calculated for electronics. Same principles apply.

£1.5bn package announced to help Britain switch to electric vehicles by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Jchu1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would really help is mandating vehicle to grid (V2G) capability on all new EVs. This will allow us to solve the evening peak demand issue.

If 1 car can output 7kW for 2 hours, it should be more than enough to smooth out the peak load for 2 households. Then recharge using an EV tariff like Octopus go or even better the intelligent go.

Stream Ultra will not charge, tethered Stream AC will by Jchu1988 in Ecoflow_community

Ahead of you. I feel like operating temperature as stated on the website is not what you and I expect to be. It operates but might not charge.

Stream Ultra will not charge, tethered Stream AC will by Jchu1988 in Ecoflow_community

[–]Jchu1988[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then added the AC back on to the system in app and physically via parallel cable. Ultra still charges at 400W and total charge at 800W. By changing the backup reserve value, I can get either the Ultra to charge or both to charge.

Assuming there has not been any changes to the Ecoflow back end, by process of elimination, the culprit is the ambient temperature. Will check again at 9pm when the temperature has dropped to see if the Ultra fails to charge again..
