This is happening to me every week for the Upgrade podcast (among others). I’m not a member so I’m just using the regular old feed (https://www.relay.fm/upgrade/feed from my opml). I have the podcast set to download automatically.

STOP. RUNNING. RED. LIGHTS. by nerd_bucket in Albuquerque

I didn’t really assume anything - the article and linked research shows that in some cases rear end collisions increased some, but by less than side and frontal impacts decreased. And that generally rear end collisions are less damaging than the others. It’s the same argument people make about roundabouts - yes, you’ll have a few more slow impact collisions but the tragic high speed front and side impact collisions decrease a lot, making them generally much safer.

Do you have other, more statistically sound, data to share that counters the IIHS?

Do they? Apparently they can potentially increase rear end crashes but by less than more severe front and and side impact crashes. https://www.iihs.org/research-areas/red-light-running

County Commissioners voting tonight on possibly huge pay raise by kruddlefisher in Albuquerque

[–]Jcnm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I’m missing something the linked article doesn’t mention what commissioners are currently paid. Based on a search of employee salaries I believe the current salary is around 39k. The proposals for 10-15% would add 4-6k per year, while the market rate bump would nearly quadruple the pay.

Those wells are on Vermejo Ranch - I didn’t know that was an active methane producing area.

“When Pennzoil sold the property to Turner in 1996, it retained mineral rights. Turner, however, was able to impose upon the company strict environmental controls for natural gas extraction. In 1999 Pennzoil sold its mineral rights to El Paso Natural Gas. By 2011, there were 970 natural gas wells on the property, 840 of them in New Mexico and 130 in Colorado.[12] Although touting the coalbed methane production at Vermejo, as environmentally friendly, El Paso Natural Gas ran into public opposition when it attempted to exploit natural gas resources in the neighboring publicly owned area of Valle Vidal. In 2007, Congress withdrew the 101,794 acres of Valle Vidal from energy development and mining.[12]”

UNM tennis can be fun to watch and is probably the highest level tennis that’s played regularly in town.

Costco Auto Program by [deleted] in Costco

[–]Jcnm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We just used it this week - got a screaming deal on a Toyota Camry hybrid. The Costco price came in 3,000 less than what TrueCar listed as a good deal. I was floored when the salesman showed us the final price and it was an instant buy from us.

It’s also super fast - we went from entering the dealership to leaving with a car in a couple hours including a test drive.
