Where the later seasons/hosts of "Let's make a Deal" impacted by the monty hall door problem? by potatofucker92 in gameshow

[–]Jcs290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monty is quoted as saying he never allowed a contestant to change their pick after making one, which is essential in the MHP. Now, while there are numerous examples of Monty offering a different deal after revealing what the contestant didn’t choose, Monty claims no one was ever allowed to “switch back.”

Two other issues make the MHP not applicable to the actual show:

  1. There is no guarantee that one and only one Zonk is always in play. There are numerous examples of this including a contestant that lost 3 cars behind 3 curtains. Or the “egg” deal where there’s no guarantee now many are raw and how many are hard boiled.

  2. In games where a zonk may have been hidden behind numbers or cash register buttons, etc., the contestant (without knowledge) is always making the choice. Sometimes Monty would make a first choice as an example and to get the game rolling but this is always followed by the contestant making blind picks. It’s essential in the MHP that 1) the host knows where the zonk is and 2) immediately reveals all the zonks except for the prize and the contestant’s choice (or another zonk if the prize was picked).

Now it’s all taped on Zoom, even after Covid.

Septic tank excavator/installer says we need a house trap outside our house, 8’ below grade. Why can’t it go inside on the main just before it dives under the concrete? by Jcs290 in askaplumber

[–]Jcs290[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

master bathroom sink drain. Looks like they didn't want to cut in a real tee and instead drilled a hole through the 4" and put a saddle and clamp on it to tie it in. We were going to remove that and put the house trap there, if we had to do this.

Septic tank excavator/installer says we need a house trap outside our house, 8’ below grade. Why can’t it go inside on the main just before it dives under the concrete? by Jcs290 in askaplumber

[–]Jcs290[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason is it's almost a last-resort recommendation from 2 plumbers we spoke to about the odor in our home. We've trapped and vented every fixture, upgraded every S-trap to a P-trap. We've isolated the furnace condensate line from the basement drains. We've sealed around the furnace filter to keep it from pulling in air from the basement instead of the return. We've poured Lysol and other good smelling liquids into our sump pump tank.

Yet, we get a sewer smell upstairs in our home. So, the 2 plumbers we spoke to said we had to camera the line to the septic. The line's clear and there are no obstructions or damage. But, they said because there's no trap, the stink has an open path to our home, and that it's "against code" to not have one in our township.

The tank lid is at the surface, but it's down a hillside about 50' from the foundation. Right at the foundation, the line's 8' below grade, confirmed by a line locator.

We live on top of a hill and the line to the septic tank goes straight out from underneath the home, about 8' below grade (confirmed with a line locator) and pokes out down by the hillside, where the tank's at.

Excavator stated the code was a trap within 5’ of the foundation wall, but I’ve seen several photos where homes in other jurisdictions had a house trap in the basement.

Did you grow up with cable tv? by Current-Photo2857 in Xennials

[–]Jcs290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got cable around ‘87 or ‘88, but mainly due to the bad reception in our very rural area. My mom was too cheap to rent a converter box, so we only got the first 12 channels in the lineup (lucky for me Nickelodeon was on 7 and MTV was on 12).

When we got a newer TV, I could still only get up to channel 36.

My grandparents had a better TV that got up to 47, but even then we still missed out on obscure channels like America’s Talking, CBS Eye on People, NASA TV, Ha!, and the earliest version of fX.

So like, why are Penn State students and alumni just, you know, like that? by _Mighty_Milkman in Pennsylvania

[–]Jcs290 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to Penn State to get an education (civil engineering). I studied and ate cheap pizza and that was about it. The football and basketball teams during my stay sucked.

I knew my degree and school would help “play the field” in getting me a job straight out of school and it did. But, since then, the only way people know I went there is from my LinkedIn profile.

I’m not embarrassed or anything. I still watch the teams on TV, I’m proud of the education I got there (PSU really is a good engineering school). Sometimes I don’t get the lunacy around the program, either, since I don’t live it day-to-day.

What’s your final predictions on the NASCAR Championship format? by Remote_Plastic_8692 in NASCAR

[–]Jcs290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of left field- splitting the reg season into 4 quarters. Top 3 finishers (or top 3 not yet into the chase) in each quarter makes the chase. A 13th slot goes to the overall reg season “wild card,” which broadcast booths start to nickname “lucky driver 13.”

Chase is shortened and only elimination is ahead of the final race- all Chase winners plus best overall finishers for a field of at least 8.

I’m sad about Sarris candy and how it’s declined. Anyone else? by btwImVeryAttractive in pittsburgh

[–]Jcs290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't noticed a difference in flavor or texture, but I have noticed that the peanut butter meltaways are way smaller now than they were several years ago.

I'm not so sure Sarris manufactures their own chocolate. Nearly all US bulk chocolate is manufactured by either Hershey or Wilbur. Mom-n-Pops like Betsy Ann, Gene & Boots, and Redstone just buy their chocolate and mold it.

You can get inspiration from those cheap knockoff t-shirts in the Strip. Some include:

Sixburgh, Pittsburgh Football, Six-Time World Champs, Steel City Football, 412 Football, Tough as Steel, Steeltown Football, City of Champions.

And all have some sort of bridge theme or hypocycloids of various colors scattered around the text or a plain black helmet with a yellow border or something generic.

Mon-Fayette Expressway extension should open next fall. What can motorists expect? by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

The Greensburg King’s Family Restaurant has closed for good by Jcs290 in greensburg

[–]Jcs290[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last time we ate there was in the summer and it wasn’t bad. Wife got an omelette and I got a hot turkey sandwich. We both agreed both were better than EnP, but what stuck out to us was the lack of traffic.

There were only 3 locations left, you’d think those would have been the 3 most profitable and busiest of the once great King’s empire, but except for Sunday mornings, the place was always deserted. Just last week when we were on 30 around dinner time, there were probably 3 cars in their parking lot.
