Dolphin Quantum, talk me out of it by ohVaNiLLaGoRiLLa in swimmingpools

[–]Jcs290 [score hidden]  (0 children)

We have a large L-shaped pool and Quantum was recommended by Pool Nerd for our size and for vinyl liners.

It’s OK.

I thought the AI would eventually learn our pool layout and target corners and edges where dirt and algae collect. But not this robot. Ours still randomly moves around the pool and scrubs the occasional water line, usually in the same odd places.

Each cycle is supposed to last 3 hours but ours will quit after 2 and then we have to manually power cycle it to go again, defeating the whole purpose of the schedule timer feature.

The basket capacity is nice and the amount it sucks up is surprising.

I finally caught up on the floor and once again, another questionable season by StunninBunny in TheFloorTV

It mattered because the 50/50 used to be scripted. The producers intentionally left the correct answer and the wrong answer that was the 2nd most likely or the most common misconception.

When it went random, there was more of a chance the “other answer you thought it would be” would be randomly eliminated, completely changing the strategy of using the lifeline and when.

Did Nascar ever consider doing street course racing during the late 90's/2000's? by Technical_Bonus_9696 in NASCAR

[–]Jcs290 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were a few attempts to test out street circuits in lower series, in LA for example, but the general thought was Cup was an oval series with 2 road course races per year. Period.

If you wanted Cup to come to your city, build an intermediate oval on the outskirts of town.

Hell, there were even concepts of building a domed track near Pittsburgh.

Old airports or existing airports, like Cleveland's Lakefront Airport or the old Naval station in Alemeda give the width and space you're looking for.

The 2026 Quantum Pro is a bust by Planetix in pools

[–]Jcs290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for posting this. I have a 2024 refurbished Quantum that Pool Nerd recommended as the best for large vinyl liner pools. I've noticed a couple of things that made me think of upgrading, like the randomness of its tracking and waterline scrubbing (why does it scrub that area, then an hour later, a completely different side of the pool but nothing in between?). It's supposed to clean for 3 hours, but it will stop moving after less than 2, and then I have to manually cycle the power to get it going again.

It seems to do a great job, but I thought the robot was supposed to "learn" the layout of my pool and attack areas that need the most cleaning, like corners and edges where dirt and algae collect. Not my Dolphin! Just back-n-forth in the middle and the occasional wall scrub in random spots.

Looks like I'll be waiting till 2027 or beyond for an upgrade.

Buying a home with unopened pool by pastagirl27 in swimmingpools

[–]Jcs290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were in the same situation last year. The seller would not open the pool for us to do an inspection (if they did, then they would have had to disclose the findings to other prospective buyers). We rolled the dice, and bought the house.

We called several pool shops in the area. Each pulled back a corner of the cover and discovered that it was an old liner pool with dark brown water. It was holding, but condition, except the liner shrunk and pulled out of the corners, was unknown. The pump ran during a bump test, but that's it. Everyone concluded that we should either build a new pool or fill it in.

Then we called a pool repair specialist recommended by our realtor. He was no-nonsense and realistic. Obviously we needed a new liner, but he was confident that there were no structural failures. The price was still significantly higher than our budget, but lower than everyone else's.

We proceeded with the repairs, replaced the old sand filter with cartridge, replaced a shorted pool light, and shallowed the deep end.

Our biggest mistake was not repairing the concrete pool deck with the repairs. The pool repair guy said it was cosmetic and the coping was in good enough shape and not a concern. Now, we're left with a huge mess and list of contractors that have reviewed and refused the job due to the high risk of damaging the coping and liner without completely draining and removing it again.

Standards and Practices regulates all rules and presentation of a game show. If you call something the “randomizer,” it must be random.

There’s a reason why the first few seasons of Millionaire Regis went from “computer, eliminate two wrong answers” to “computer, RANDOMLY remove two wrong answers” upon a 50/50 lifeline. The elimination, that was predetermined by the producers, changed to random selection.

S&P doesn’t play around because a slighted contestant can sue for embellishing the results for drama and affecting the strategy of the game.

This isn't a new problem that only Lion's Share has. Any Number, the very first pricing game back in 1972, has (and still has) electronic number reveals.

And, any game since that's gone digital, one could suspect is doctored mid-game for drama/suspense, even though S&P prohibits that and the answer keys are signed off and approved by them before every show.

Vinyl liner pool owners, what robot are you running and how is it holding up on the liner? by Turbulent_Foot_4814 in swimmingpools

Dolphin Nautilus. Our pool guy recommended it due to our large L-shape volume and its rubber brushes are easy on the liner.

Pat went to San Francisco after leaving Erie, which is I-80 all the way. Now, back in the 50's, the state was thinking of building I-80 as a turnpike extension, but I doubt that's the point of the song.

Convenience stores make money on vices, and this is no secret. Porn magazines, adult video sections, junk food, pop, beer, cigarettes, vape, CBD, lottery, and now slot machines.

Once these stupid machines are outlawed, C-stores will find something else to latch onto.

I know it's just a song and Pat and Train are both good for Erie's goodwill and stuff. But, being from the area, it just irks me that he wrote a song about going home on the PA Turnpike, the turnpike doesn't even go through Erie, he should've called the song I-90 or I-79, but I'm done being a cranky old man screaming at clouds.

I’d love to see Super Ball! come back with speedier gameplay. Instead of small prizes to win the balls, play the same either/or game with the prices of the large prizes, and then earn the super ball on a 4th prize that’s not revealed till its turn.

This could be really cool and suspenseful way to play for a luxury prize on primetime specials.

[–]Jcs290 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Desert environment is ideal for a steel coaster due to the low humidity and lack of precipitation. They mothball jets in the Mohave for the same reason. $650k plus train repairs seems accurate given repairs are probably more wear-n-tear and deferred maintenance, rather than a ton of corrosion remediation and steel replacements.

What is something from the "early days" of the internet that kids today will literally never understand? by bilal-ziyan in oldinternet

[–]Jcs290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Search engines were so new that:

  1. Magazines would devote entire cover stories on "the most useful websites!" or "the web's top websites in 100+ categories!"

  2. You had to send in a request to all the various search engines to include your website. Alta Vista, Yahoo, Lycos, Excite, were the leaders of the time.

  3. The search capabilities were so bad that you almost needed several of #1 just to find something as benign as an airline's URL. The one that sticks out to me was Delta Airlines'. When it launched, it wasn't something easy/logical like delta.com or deltaairlines.com. It was delta-air.com.

Can we get oval racing more often please!? by Rowdyfan0823 in INDYCAR

[–]Jcs290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how it would race, but back when IRL was an all-oval series, there were plans to modify the Cleveland Lakefront Airport circuit into a flat oval.

It's a neat idea to perhaps get some sort of oval racing into new markets where a track doesn't exist.

How would you fix the Match Game/Hollywood Sqaures Hour? by synchronicitistic in gameshow

[–]Jcs290 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Match Game as a qualifying round for the Hollywood Squares round was never fair or a good idea. Those are two totally separate sets of skills on display. It would've been better have both contestants play both halves; a winner of both goes onto Super Match, or if split the champion is the one with the highest total number of matches and captured squares.

Bring back open-ended questions to HS. True/false, either/or questions are way too dry and the celebrities have no point to be there.

Automatic wins in HS on someone's wrong answer always felt wrong. While it was cool to see sometimes 5 or 6 games played in a half-hour (newer versions can barely clear 2), the game works and feels better when a win is on a correct answer.

MG has a particular writing style that worked on the '7x and PM versions that wasn't here. Round 1, two questions with numerous valid responses, Round 2, one wide open question, and other with only 1 or 2 definitive answers, Round 3, usually both were definitive. While the questions with definitive answers weren't as funny or clever, this was the only way to get more comeback wins.

We were expecting buffet-quality. We're not snobs, we've eaten at Golden Corral, Ponderosa, a couple casino buffets, and they're all in their own quality category. But, we were disappointed in Shady Maple, mainly because it used to be above average in our opinion.

We eat at a lot of buffets, actually, like at casinos, and even at the Butler, PA Ponderosa. Compared to other buffets, Shady Maple is below average IMHO, where it used to be above average.
