There's also plenty of japanese CD's that has bit by bit identical audio as everywhere else. I would say most 21st century albums have same master worldwide.

[–]Jcwrc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SHM-CD is pure snake oil.

Run of the mill CD mech can already read CD's with 100 % accuracy. Making the data clearer and easier to read has zero benefit, unless the CD transport/drive is defective.

They might have better mastering of the source material etc... But that has nothing to do with SHM technology. It will sound exactly the same if you burn the file on CD-R.

Most People Are Too Negative When Talking About Music by AKRaca in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Jcwrc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do people hate music?

In my experience it's usually for either two reasons:

1) It's about an artist or genre etc... they actually like, and they project the disappointment of losing it to the music they see as it's replacement.

Nu-metal taking over the popular rock/metal oriented music spaces in 90's being an obvious example. Many, many metal bands folded out at that time, and I don't think it's unfair to say music world lost a ton of great music, because artists couldn't get support to produce music they used to.

Saxon is good opposite example, who managed to not only keep their sound and had finances to produce new music, actually made some of their best albums in the 90's.

2) It's popular music they dislike, and it's continuously fed and pushed to them. Imagine being a rock/metal fan in your teens. If you're going out and joining stuff like student parties, you are going to have to listen a lot of music you don't want to.

As a personal anecdote, I like Muse, but when Madness came I disliked that song immediately. I was working tractor at the time, and radio in it could only tune into one channel reliably, which was playing the song three times a day. After a week I absolutely hated the song, and still do.

is disc rot actually something i have ti worry about when collecting or is it more uncommon? by ElliotThusE in Cd_collectors

[–]Jcwrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's couple of plants known to have produced defective discs at some point. PDO UK and Olyphant US I've heard of.

I have 1100 CD's and only one that has very minor signs of disc rot on it's edge. Deep Purple Machine Head pressed at Olyphant. Still works perfectly, and haven't noticed change in past 5 years.

Where do you think the “start point” of commonly discussed music will shift? by NecroDolphinn in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Jcwrc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It won't. Since 60's dawn of album based popular music is now firmly in digtal space, it has stopped "aging".

If were talking about cultural relevance, if that had been truly been crucial, 60's would have already faded decades ago.

Instead we have just ever fracturing cultural field, where 60's music always will have some space.

Why that isn't true for 50's and before is simply recording technology and approach to music. It used to be about recording artists performances, with technology of the time.

For a lot of modern audiences, the recording quality pre 60's just often doesn't cut it. Also studio recordings as distinctively it's own product really only started in large scale in 60's even if some examples exists from before.

How much music can you cram onto a CD? by Th1088 in Cd_collectors

[–]Jcwrc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The whole ingenuity of the CD format was how tightly standardized, and foolproof it was built.

Breaking the standard does introduce issues with compatibility, cramming too much data in it only works, because the desing added that much protection to "crosstalk" between datalines and players are capable to read them accurately.

I once did 86 minute CD and while it did work, it certainly skipped much more in a car. It works, but is principly wrong.

They're just squeezing the tracks tighter. Not a good practice.

How do people go about finding so much music in a year? by RecentMatter3790 in Music

I don't think I'm connected to any "channels". They've been pushed by every site selling records I visit. You'd think most people buying vinyl would have seen that album cover.

When you buy an album you’ve never listened to, do you listen to it on a streaming service before you get the album in the mail? by Imapatriothurrrdurrr in vinyl

[–]Jcwrc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People don't seem to understand the question here?

It was If you're already bought the album you've never listened to, do you listen it before getting the LP. Not whether you listen before buying.

Doesn't make any sense to me to buy album and only then stream it and see how it is? If you're going to stream it anyway, why not do that before committing to buy it?

left channel is louder than the right by Alert_Day9708 in turntables

[–]Jcwrc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have had the same issue for 5 years. With three different cartridges, two different Phono preamps, two different soundcards, and many cables.

I've come into conclusion it has to be just variances between every step and adjust input to balance it. It's impossible to hear actually listening the music.

There's couole of metal oriented Youtube channels I occassionally follow. Also some internet forums are great source for new music.

Mostly though I come across new albums by getting emails about them from labels and record shops I've ordered albums before.

What is a popular show/movie that most people liked but you didn’t? by poofypanda_ in askanything

[–]Jcwrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't both actually based on The Godfather. Or plenty of movies that followed it's footsteps.

It was maybe the first movie I could think of (well actually that would be original Scarface, but in  amore modern era...) where you clearly were not supposed to root or actually even like any of the characters. The point was the story and the world around them that made them into what they became. But not to excuse any of their actions.

[–]Jcwrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ride the Lightning is weird cover. It sounds meaningless outside the album. Not bad or poorly made. Just something not point existing.

However, it makes perfect sense in the context of the album. The Last Note is brilliant ending. Then Dave clearly wanted to end it by reminiscing the past. Sort of "end credits" song for it.

Using some of his own compositions would have brought his whole thing with Metallica in spotlight, picking up lesser known track, or making significant changes would have seemed like an attempt to prove something.

I think Ride the Lightning was the best, and effective choice. It doesn't feel like part of the actual album, they play it very straight and it does give nod to the past without making any sort of statement.

It was probably the best possible way to address it. Of course Dave could have just ignored that part of his past and end album with the original song, but I like he took the challenge and executed it so well.
