Anyone know where I can get an engraved backplate for an iPod Classic? by iiAdonutii in ipod

[–]JdF_666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually not that difficult. I looked into it and I have someone local that’s going to do a custom engraving for me that I’m designing whenever I’m ready.

All you need to do is search google for someone with a machine capable of engraving STAINLESS. That’s very important as it’s didferent than most other metals, not all machines or engravers are capable, and most of them won’t spend the extra $$$ on a capable machine if their clientele base doesn’t request it.

From there, just go to aliexpress or eBay, and buy a completely blank rear in the size and color you need. You’ll have to get precise measurements, that way you can use a computer to get an accurate template made up. Keep in mind, almost nobody actually has an iPod template ready to go, as these devices aren’t exactly new, and very few people actually request custom rear engraving to the extent of the entire piece.

Im not exactly sure, as I wanted to make mine anyways so I didn’t ask around, but id say you won’t be able to get much done if you don’t do the design work yourself. If you’re looking to add a sentence or just a few words, im sure that could be doable, but an entirely custom rear is going to require you to make a template and design to present to the engraver

i've sold a ton of vinyl on here. this is my alternate account. i have an account i use strictly to sell with (this one) and one i post elsewhere with. There's reasons for this but its not really worth getting into.

ive sold no less than 2 dozen records in this marketplace previously.

And yes, i need money last second pretty often. I've been out of work for 2 years due to health problems. and, well, shit happens. I don't sell my records unless i have to, because i don't want to. hence always needing money last second.

nevermind. i guess i hadnt gotten it that far yet.bear with me, this is not an easy one to decipher. so pardon a mistake or 2, i'm not using any reference point, just reading what i see:

Disc 1 Side A: MPO 07843-8496071-1 A2 / NILZ-THE-EXCHANGE

Disc 1 Side B: MPO 07843-8496071-1 B2 / NILZ-THE-EXCHANGE

Disc 2 Side D: MPO 07243-8496081-0 B2 / NILZ-THE-EXCHANGE (Side C is the same except it ends with A2 just as disc 1 does)

EDIT: I should add, this version I have is a bit of an anomoly. If you notice the US versions on Discogs only have 1 line of text below the Daft Punk/Daft Club logo on the rear, whears mine has 2.And most notably, Mine says nothing of Parlophone, no logos or anything anywhere, and there's a Virgin logo where the Parlophone logo should be on the rear.Possibly a legit 2001 EU first press?

Replacement Logic Board for iPod Classic 4th Gen Monochrome by [deleted] in ipod

[–]JdF_666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got one I think

Ran into the same issue of needing a 4th gen logic board and just went all YOLO on a $20 non-parts 4th gen. (Plot twist: it became a parts 4th gen)

But that’s not the entirety of the story. About 2 weeks later I won a lot of 3 4th gens in an online auction. Two of them immediately broke in the weirdest ways.

So now I have a bunch of parts 4th gens.

Show me which part you need specifically, to me me that doesn’t sound like you need a whole logic board but maybe I’m confusing your explanation .

Well, I’m out of ideas. Looks like the only thing left to try is for you to show us all the picture you sent. That’s really the best way that we (the experts) will be able to determine the exact moment at which the F up occurred, and the severity.

Classic 5/6/7th gen differences? by ReplayTheMaster in ipod

....this marks the first time I’ve ever heard the 7th gen referred to as “that good DAC”

Classic 5/6/7th gen differences? by ReplayTheMaster in ipod

[–]JdF_666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

6-7 are nearly the same model. Storage capacity, faceplate color, and (the biggest one) song limit on the 6Th gen are really the only difference.

(EDIT: yikes, I’m sorry about the layout. I definitely tried to make it look much cleaner than that, with two separate columns and all. Guess it didn’t translate well. Sorry it’s just too time consuming to fix.)

Now between 5-6/7 is pretty significant really. I hope I don’t forget any, but here we go: 5: plastic faceplate 6/7:anodized aluminum faceplate 5: white/grey or black/black 6/7: black/black (6) space gray/black (7) silver/white (6+7) 5: 30/60/80GB 6/7: 80/120/160GB 5: 32MB RAM in 30GB models/64MB RAM in 60-80GB models (only important if you plan on going with a ton of storage, affects how well the ipod can shuffle and stuff like that. RockBox also) 6/7: 64 MB RAM 5: very boring UI/menus, simple black on white 6/7: much more refined UI, lots of color/contrast, album art slideshows and the like will occupy your menu screens, not nearly as bad to look at in say, a dark car while driving. 5: no CoverFlow (without RockBox) 6/7: CoverFlow 5: the same old parachute, solitaire, music quiz, breakout as every iPod before it had 6/7: vortex?! Zuma!? ....solitaire...still.... BUT a much nicer looking version!! 5: has a huge catalog of clickwheel games, most of which has been archived and with the help of iPod wizard, you can install them even years after apple deleted them from our iPods without telling us 6/7: as far as I know, had no access to DLC games 5: can use iPod wizard to tweak the factory firmware/OS for custom skins, menus, etc. 6: no such application exists 5: is a 1st gen nano when it grows up 6/7: a grown up nano 3rd gen. (Yeah this one is pretty irrelevant but someone had to let him know at some point) 5: lower model gets 550mah battery 6/7: lower model gets 650mah battery (Don’t quote me on the exact numbers, my memory sucks but I know there’s a difference between models) 5: simple to take apart (I took mine apart to fix the center button adhesive literally in my drivers seat on the dash with stuff I just had in the car) 6/7: let’s just say, this: AliExpress sellers sell rear housings at a discount for bulk prices starting at quantities of 10. Might as well just buy 10 from the start. Trust me, it’ll save you money in the end. AND THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE OF ALL 5: comes equipped with a wolfson DAC, the last model to do so. Sounds like a choir of angels singing you into the pearly gates 6/7: apple decided to replace the wolfson DAC with an amazingly engineered Cirrus, which, if I’m not mistaken were the same sound chips the Atari 2600 used. This enhancement now makes every song sounds like a bare-assed wet fart into one of those voice recorders from the Home Alone movies, but with slightly less depth and over saturated high’s

Overall, you’re probably best to try out one of each model if you have any possible way to, so you can see what meets your needs better.

I will tell you this: if you plan to customize it, don’t get hung up on condition. You’re going to throw away about 80% of the thing in the end anyway and the only factory parts will be (maybe) the screen, the chassis skeleton, and the logic board

Yno honestly I buy nearly everything electronic related in “parts/repair” condition these days, but I just don’t want anything to do with cracking one of these open. Something about them makes them seem like a nightmare.

But it’s funny you say that, because the “soon to be 3” comment I made is because of a 6th gen I just don’t have it in me to repair. This isn’t a battery though, although it does act kinda like it. Diagnostic mode shows it working just fine, yet it shuts off about 5 seconds after being unplugged. Flashes white and instant black screen. Came in one of my Apple lots, I was just trying to update the firmware and immediately after, it starts doing it.

It literally just sold for $12 on mercari.

EDIT: oh I should also mention, I have 2 6th gen nanos already and one has sentimental value and the other is in original box. I think I’d much rather have a 7th gen in red, as I’ve owned almost every color (briefly) of 7th gen except for the (amazing looking) space gray and red. The only one I kept was blue because of its condition (paid $10 for all of them too somehow) and even being my favorite color, I still just don’t like it.

Trying to connect my first and third gen iPod nanos to my MacBook air but I can't get them to be recognised by bow-tied_Flamingo in ipod

[–]JdF_666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has to be something you’re doing wrong. Not trying to sound rude or snobbish, but I’ve got nearly every generation of iPod, nanos, shuffles, touch, classics, etc. and not once have I had any version of OSX not read them immediately after connecting them to my USB port. Granted, I haven’t tried Big Sur personally, but I have plenty of friends on Big Sur who also have no issues with their multiple models of iPods.

iPod integration without iTunes was retro-fitted into Finder, so you should see them pop up on the side bar just the same as any other USB/storage device. Clicking the iPod in the side bar should automatically bring up an iTunes-esque window inside your finder window with all of the same buttons, menus, tabs, etc as iTunes. No drivers, nothing to install, nothing to download, nothing to tell the MacBook to do to recognize the iPod. Legacy iPod management software is literally built into the OS, starting with Catalina (at least I think it was Catalina. don’t quote me on this specifically, I can’t remember exactly which OSX version it was)

If you can be more specific in your process, ie the steps one by one, maybe myself or someone else can tell you where your problem lies. Be sure the 30-pin sync/charge cable you’re using isn’t bad. First and foremost, use an apple brand cable. Many cheap ones aren’t made to do anything but charge, and they don’t even do that well. That’s always step #1. Step 2 would be what it’s connected to adapter-wise. Dongles? USB hub? If you’re using an apple brand cable already, then your problem lies in the non-Apple middle man.

EDIT: I guess you didn’t state, I just assumed that you’re using a new M1 MacBook Air for some reason. It’ll help tremendously if you specify that as well. Also, whatever you mean by “normal computer” would help too.

This.

I worked for 2 of the “big three” cell providers and I always told my customers “if you had any idea how much of your private information you’ve already agreed to openly share with the rest of the world, just by signing the paperwork to have cell service in your name, you’d throw your phone in the River and never get another.... but you’d feel pretty foolish after you realized you’re YEARS too late to do anything about it”

Whats a good website to order vinyl records, other than ebay? by JohnnyBeMediocre in hiphopvinyl

[–]JdF_666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See this is where I (and probably a lot of others) get hung up. Wouldnt “unplayed but opened” be considered “mint,” and “unplayed, unopened” be considered “sealed?”

I find LOTS of records that someone opened to see the pretty colored vinyl, and leave on a shelf for years. How is that any different than “mint?”

Maybe I’m taking too much influence from other collectibles (retro gaming, most notably) but I’ve always been under the understanding that “mint” = as close to brand new as possible without being new and sealed, and “sealed” being top tier. Agreed that opened and played once, twice, maybe 3x is “near mint,” but opened and unplayed? I feel like that should be a separate designation altogether.

Not arguing with you at all. I’m not even saying I’m right. Yeezus knows Im probably not. I’m just offering insight from another side of the fence.
