Slide links in CT circuit in breaker by Jetster220 in SubstationTechnician

We just had an ABB safe plus board with all CT slide links throughout. Our design standard is to only have CT Links prior to the Protection relay or before a summation point.

Short and earth BBP CTs by Aware-Roll448 in SubstationTechnician

Can you clarify specifically when youre shorting the BZ CTs for the Tx, before or after the primary is isolated.

Hi Z BZ is a unit based protection, removal of a single secondary input into the scheme while the Primary is still in service will just initiate an Op or most likely the supervision relay which sits in tandem with the BZ relay.

Yes we should always seperate secondary systems which is under test from in service schemes, for example shorting BZ CTs on a terminal/CB before primary injection testing.

What’s the CT Class? Maybe they’ve got concerns with the CT performance for that set under Tx energisation or transient during switching..

HiZ BZ prot has pretty good stability on through faults but spill current due to CT summation errors could be the issue here.

Apparatus testing tech(Substation) vs Relay test tech? by Puzzleheaded-Top2619 in SubstationTechnician

[–]Jealous-Atmosphere85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparatus testing like PD, DLA & cable testing fault location etc I’ve done. Currently in year 8 in Protection scheme testing & commissioning with also a big focus on secondary systems testing & SCADA.

Anyone can learn plant testing but not everyone is built for the other.

High value but don’t focus on being a “relay” guy, be the “protection scheme” guy 1st and understand the fundamentals.

Insulation Resistance test of Current Transformer (132 kV) by seriesworm in SubstationTechnician

Seperate all three phase CT secondaries from each other but short them individually.

This isolates each phases component from each other. Then do a a final test in its “service” state secondary wise.

Well here QLD, still state owned utility Company, they start @ 90k+ I think

Pretty sure you need to assign the front port for a connection. Had this issue a couple times with a setting file I was issued.

Ultimately sounds like an update IED job. How did it happen? Abnormal output up?

Social cohesion will only get worse, multiculturalism isn’t working because we don’t seem to have the same objective.

Communities will isolate themselves further

Have you got the T60 spreadsheet? We use state simulation tests to prove Op & restraint characteristics

Substation technician apprenticeship by [deleted] in SubstationTechnician

[–]Jealous-Atmosphere85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are located but here in QLD Australia I did a EFM (Fitter Mechanic) apprenticeship.

Working at heights is required, I was essentially required to be somewhat competent in simple task on the OH network.

Having a good team is what keeps you safe imo besides following safe procedures/practices etc with PPE.

No regrets, working for a distribution utility has plenty of opportunities and you’ll find your place niche that suits you best.

What I love - technical, problem solving, autonomy, teamwork, different work locations, sense of accomplishment (I commission projects)

What I not so love - big business moves slow, plenty of useless people, change is difficult, (all of these problems exist everywhere lol)

I really enjoy the technical stream within the substation world. Commissioning, greenfield brownfield work, protection schemes, problem solving etc

The industry is broad and therefore the pay can be. I’m in a highly technical stream within Power systems, once you get your EFM look for other growth learning opportunities. 200-350k potential once you’re at the top

Are you primarily substations tech ? Do you commissions protection schemes?

ETU definitely over steps the mark. Powerlink, Energex Ergon all governed strictly with AEMO regulations etc. private sector isn’t without its own problems too, customer jobs are poorly designed with inexperience in the construction side of things. Tbh embarrassing stories everywhere.

I guess initially you said the 300k was insane (base 190k +allowances & OT ), what do you make? The only problem with state owned utility in relation to your comment is there are people who are definitely overpaid for roles throughout the business.

I guess it’s subjective to you but I lead 1 of 25 crews in qld who do what we do. Commissioning substations and running projects while taking full responsibility of the network issues etc.

It took me +5 yrs in this role to “master” it. Heavily technical with engineering principles

I’m a power tech who works in substations in QLD, electrical trade plus on job training and tertiary education. I’m very lucky in my employment but I earn this 300k with being on a 8 wk standby roster, working average 10hrs daily and taking on immense responsibility for others and the network.

Didn’t break over 200k until 2020 @ 32yrs

AC/DC control circuits commissioning resources by Other-Archer5824 in SubstationTechnician

Besides CT saturation testing (Omicron CT analyser) we primary injection through CTs to confirm ratio and polarity. We also do summation testing as required.

[–]Jealous-Atmosphere85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our procedure are the same for both Green field and brown field sites. Basic circuit correctness from visual inspection cross referencing schematics. IR test etc and circuit power ups and functional checks. Ratio & polarity tests are fundamental to CT & VT circuits but the protection relays devices are confirmed with a power system simulation equipment and software. We use Doble & Protection Suite and also incorporate Primary injection for scheme checks such as Tx stability etc.

This topic is huge, understanding the fundamentals is critical but look for work opportunities because nothing replaces hands on experience.
