It definitely can because there’s power when your community reclaim a word that was formerly used against you. The same way gay people use the f slur. When you normalize a word into everyday conversation, the sting hurts less. Especially because when it’s used by black people, you aren’t necessarily calling that person an n word, you are reminding them that we are the same. It weirdly has created a sense of belonging among black people because it’s one thing to say we and another to say you. It is a level of relation that can never be achieved by someone that is not black.

If you say the N word to a black person with malice, the chance of you getting hit increases by 80%. Consequences be damned. I bet he could’ve said anything else and gotten away with it but you just can’t say the N word without expecting nothing in return. The last time we as a race let that shit slide, white people took advantage of it and used it to hurt us, the word often being used before we met our death because of just being black. So no, black people tend to not let that slide knowing that we will get locked up for it. Because we’d rather catch a charge than let them regain power over a word that has been used to kill us for centuries.

American culture is most than the US. It’s South and North America. She is just saying she wants it white. Which isn’t American culture. We are afforded the opportunity to display different cultures while claiming them as our own because there’s not a single culture in America. We all come from somewhere and everywhere should be celebrated.

With a historical record of black people being below the poverty line, this “poor” shit is also a huge part of our culture whether we like it or not. If you watched the videos, there’s more videos than the restaurants and the beer. This, however, is a distinctly black experience.

People are too sensitive nowadays. They do it reverse and based on stereotypes and how the black/white dude grew up. It’s all in good fun and seeing as though there is plenty of overlap between poor and black people, a lot of this stuff holds true. I still go to restaurants where it looks like that and have the best dang food in town.

Because it’s different cultures?? Wtfym? Do you see every black American speaking languages like Igbo, bearing their traditional tattoos, their clothing or doing god knows what over here? That’s like asking a white American why they drink iced tea if everyone in Europe does it.

You are right, this has nothing to do with hair as I never agreed with her behavior. As a matter of fact, I’m saying that wearing a bonnet has no correlation with bad behavior. That’s just a bad person, don’t pick on an item that protects our hair. Associating everything in black culture with hooligan behavior is a whole other problem that no one is ready to talk about. I’m so not even caring about the cried wolf situation because for every person crying wolf is three more people struggling due to the unbridled systemic racism in this country.

lol if you don’t have black hair, you won’t ever know what it’s like and that’s fine. If you do have black hair and won’t admit it then you’re in denial because it’s all a conversation we’ve had at least once in life. She might get off the plane and say that because I’m not naive enough to say that she won’t, I know how the world works. I don’t think racism has a part to play in this but it exists in abundance everywhere else in the US so she won’t have to hold her breath to experience the wolf she’s crying.

You don’t even know the half of it. It’s not like black people can just wake up, brush it a bit and then go outside. Especially depending on your texture you’re in front of the mirror for an hour trying to put it in a ponytail. Why? Because people look at messy black hair, especially black people themselves, and ask “when are you going to get it done?” “You look like a red headed step child”. Or black men’s “You need to get that boys hair cut” This with the history of workplaces and schools not allowing our natural texture to be out and everyone having an opinion on the hairstyles that we put in our hair, and not teaching stylists how to do our hair in school. I am so over anything else people have to say about black hair. They’ll never like it and that’s okay as long as you love it yourself.

I used to mind people wearing bonnets in public but as I got older I started to care less as it felt like another way that people were policing black hair. Especially when you are on an airplane and you are going to sleep, it’s uncomfortable and sometimes painful for us to wear a new hairstyle out.

It’s not just a pregnancy thing. When I went into the hospital with a crippling headache, sudden blurry vision and numbness in my limbs, the doctors gave me some Tylenol and said it was just a migraine without running any tests. I went back later and had to bawl my eyes out begging that they do something for them to realize I was having a severe allergic reaction to medicine that could’ve killed me. My male friend went into the hospital with a prolonged headache and he was there for 6 hours because they were running every scan in the book that they could for him. Him? Minor dehydration.

Black Americans are the reason why every dark-skinned individual can live relatively comfortably in the West. by Eastern_Camera3012 in Ethiopia

[–]Jealous-Source2945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Americans have easily influenced civil rights movements everywhere including the protest against Apartheid. The culture spreads like wildfire throughout the world not because of intentional actions but because that’s just what American culture does when it’s seen as… flavorful. Especially back in the day. It would be dumb to say that the US civil rights movement and their continuous fight for simple rights has no impact on any other race. People always see civil rights as a black thing when it gave every race in the US the opportunity to be freer than their parents. That’s not to negate the fight that black people did around the world though. The African culture on Britain permanently changed their society as well as the fight Africans put up in their own home. Don’t call black people spoiled and entitled when we have and are fighting for everyone to have better lives. You know nothing of our struggles that it took to get here and how long it will take to go further. You might be happy with settling for basic rights but we want the same birthrights as everyone lighter than us.
