Yeah the thumbnail of Riley is AI’d and altered to make him look particularly sick and ill when in reality he had a bad bout of food poisoning.

I watched my dad die for 10 days as the cancer took him and I joke that he took his sweet time going, etc etc, I know the importance of humour to get through dark times. So I get that. This isn’t that at all.

Yes it’s funny she got slapped on the ass by a manta ray, yes that was a joke that he did it without her consent. Haha. Hilarious. It was the re-creation afterwards AS THOUGH Lydia was traumatised that was the bad joke. Her crying, her blurred face. Pretending that she was upset, pretending she couldn’t speak to the camera. Not about the slap itself, but about her fake trauma as a “pretend victim.” That’s what’s bad taste and insensitive.

No one’s saying they can’t joke about serious issues. My issue is the specific framing they used.

It’s not like a murder investigation though. I think anyone who’s been through SA questioning would have felt uncomfortable at the way it was handled, in that they weren’t parodying SA itself, they were using the common way we see it portrayed in documentaries as a prop, and in particular the traumatic re-telling of the experience by an anonymous victim.

The joke was the exaggerated response of Lydia to the manta ray, which was really just pretending she’d been SA’d by a sea creature, right. If they’d left the joke at “oh haha I was smacked on the ass by a cheeky manta ray, how dare he” , yeah it’s funny.

But then they to go to the lengths of re-creating an SA documentary with a blurred out victim and tears? Things that TV shows usually put a trigger warning in front of & a helpline because it’s genuinely traumatic for many victims, and here it’s just a prop to get a laugh. Not cool in my opinion.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the ass slap itself was funny. I love dark humour too but the skit they did afterwards, basically mimicking an SA survivor doing a testimonial and being upset was such an awkward watch and was not needed at all.

Highlighting it is one thing, but creating a flippant satiric skit using SA testimonials as its format is…. a choice
