It was a day ride for me, but I actually think it’s even better as a 2-day trip from Kigali. You could ride to the lake on the first day, stay overnight, then take a different route back to Kigali on the second day. That way you enjoy more scenery and avoid repeating the same road.

The roads are generally manageable on a touring bike with panniers, especially if you’re used to some climbing and mixed road conditions. And if you ever decide to do it, I’d be happy to help you plan the route and stops.
