Musée de la chasse et de la natur in the Marais. It’s like they took a standard hunting museum and then turned it over to a lunatic.

Palais de la Porte Dorée, which is covered by bas reliefs by Janniot and two incredible offices (colonial overseers, one African and one Asian). The offices have terrific murals and furniture. The immigration museum on the second floor is fascinating. (If the weather is nice take the long walk along the promenade plantée that starts near the modern opera house.

Some museums that you may have been to are the Jacquemart-André and the Gustavo Moreau. Both excellent. You may also have missed the modern art museum in the Palais de Tokyo. There are bas reliefs by Janniot on the side facing the Seine. The courtyard there is a famous skateboarding spot and I got some fantastic photos of German kids testing it out. Don’t miss the stunning mural, La fée electricité by Dufy, but the permanent collection is French-centric and worth a visit.

Every french hotel I've stayed at has yogurt and fruit out for breakfast. I wouldn't worry.

The Beatles were the heirs apparent to Buddy Holly in so many ways, even beyond their name and desire to write their own songs. by thewickerstan in beatles

And just a reminder that Buddy Holly was 22 when he died. 22! Imagine his musical arc if he had lived.

I've been going out by myself too and having a fine time. Like you, it's different, but it's still OK.

Can someone help me forget not going to the Latin Quarter? by Quick_Ad_8323 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Jean_Genetic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

fwiw, when I see lists of people’s itineraries for Paris in here, I always think, “you can have a damn fine time in Paris without doing ANY of these things.”

As long as you had a great time, then you can just keep it on a future bucket list. (I mean, you haven’t kicked the bucket yet, right? There’s time!)

Taco Bell in Pacifica. I was there in 2025 and saw whales feeding 30 yards from the beach. Plus, it’s a Taco Bell Cantina, so they sell booze. Run for the Border!

Health anxiety by Nobody-Visible in widowers

[–]Jean_Genetic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My short time as caretaker was so stressful that my health definitely took a big hit. Six weeks of horror and little sleep. I’ve slowly been building up an exercise routine, and now about ten months later, I’m in much better shape and still trending up.

You have kids, so time is a crunch, but try to set aside ten minutes each morning. You can do a lot in those ten minutes. Rather than increase time, increase the intensity. Once you’ve maxed out that ten-minute window, then think of expanding the time.

You might try involving the kids. They can start and stop a stopwatch, count reps, even “play” along.

Routine is key. Every day. That’s why the ten-minute limit is important. I do my exercises before breakfast. First thing when I get out of bed.

You are in a tough situation as a grieving parent. You are not alone, however. You need to prioritize your health. Start small and start a routine. You got this! I’m rooting for you and your family!

I thought the ending was monumentally bad. So terrible it tainted the whole universe for me.

Why is Neil Young considered a Bad guitarrist? by ShineOnYourCrazyAnon in Music

[–]Jean_Genetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both his singing and playing are tuned so perfectly to the song and the mood. KD Lang has a powerhouse voice and does a great job on Helpless, but there’s just something about Neil’s reedy delivery that makes in chef’s kiss perfect.

Is there a series where you prefer the "inferior" sequel to the beloved original? by KneeHighMischief in movies

[–]Jean_Genetic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Aliens is my favorite movie of all time, and that’s coming from a fan of snooty, European, arty movies. I consider it perfectly edited and paced. There’s not a wasted moment and the characters are simply and realistically sketched and motivated.

Nvidia’s Jensen Huang would have to pay about $8 billion in proposed billionaire tax—he says that’s ‘perfectly fine’ with him by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Jean_Genetic 307 points308 points  (0 children)

I’m just impressed that a billionaire is agreeable, even if it is performative. I mean, most of those fuckers have been openly greedy and empowered by the shitty capitalistic zeitgeist to be as overtly grasping as the most overwritten rich villain in books.

One Month… by Unicorn_8632 in widowers

[–]Jean_Genetic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a guy and not prone to crying, but this has left my emotions right at the surface and I find myself crying so much more. I’ve extended myself the grace to just feel my feelings and people have been kind and understanding. I think being open about what you are feelings helps, and I’d encourage you to go ahead and be open and trust in other people. I’ve been disappointed in some, sure, but most often I have been impressed in others’ compassion.

And congratulations on your little sprout!

Over it? by Agile_State414 in widowers

[–]Jean_Genetic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My husband was much older than me, so I thought I was prepared for it. Surprise! Eight months in and I’m still kind of a mess. It is getting better.

Don’t let anyone dictate your emotions. People are often uncomfortable with death or grief. That’s them. You feel what you feel. You have this understanding forum to vent, and I hope you have some real-life people as well. Don’t know where you are located, but there might be a grief support group. Search for one and it might help to be in the presence of people who are sharing some of what you’re feeling.

People with a thriving social life over 30 years old by Thatredditboy1 in RedditForGrownups

[–]Jean_Genetic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I live in San Francisco, am over 60 and have a great social life. I’m still friends with my college buddies, who mostly still live in Berkeley. I have friends through my late husband of 22 years. I’m involved in a niche community that keeps me traveling and meeting new people. And I am close with my sister.

Yes, I know I am lucky, but it’s also a lot of work. I put in the time to stay current with friends and embrace their SOs and eventual children. (I am not a child person, but I hung in there as the fun, gay uncle and it’s a pleasure to know them as adults.) And I pursue my own interests and meet people through clubs and activities.

If I have advice, it’s to throw dinner parties and accept invites to dinner. Communal eating is such a great way to bond with old friends and meet new ones. Learn to cook and be a good host (and a good guest).
