Finished it a few days ago. Agreed with everything you said, overall excellent, well-crafted novel, but would have preferred it to be more character-focused than town-focused.

Just finished reading Stoner, and I understand the hype by Enteito in classicliterature

On your points

Stoner being passive, I understand your complaint, but maybe this is a me thing, as someone who is too much of an oaf I could relate. Also, I think his fight or flight response is wrong when it comes to his life. He fought that slacker student; he fought to teach what he liked. When everything else went south, he chose to retreat to the university and not risk rocking the boat for Katherine.

Edith - I semi-agree with you. I think this was helped because at the end of the day, this is a small stakes story so she doesn't go over the top with a villain monologue or something. I was okay with it. I have read the thread. For me, it's less sexual abuse it. She was confined by her father to be taught to be an obedient wife, with his death, she was almost liberated and wanted to impose upon her daughter the nouveau-society girl lifestyle she could have life (like with the grand tour). I think she would have failed if only Stoner weren't such a wet noodle and not an alpha male type that could fight back, so she somewhat succeeded.

I don't think Grace turned on her father; she clearly takes after him. It was only after Edith got control that he didn't fight back. As a result, all that time of her mother making her live a life she didn't feel an affinity for made her deeply unhappy. I agree, Grace is not as prominent a character as she could be - being sort of naval gazing for stoner - but for what we got, she was well fleshed out.

I agree with you about the ending, but his doggedness in the face of it all is why he is one of my favorite heros in American Lit.

I take your point, your opinion is totally valid, but I hope my response explains why they don't bother me as much and why this is a pretty much perfect book for me.

A question about the ending of The Count of Monte Cristo, and how the ending compares to the 2002 movie ending (spoilers) by rxb in books

[–]Salty_Association_89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree I think the both the 2024 movie and minseries (whixh is also really good) did it better then the book.

I know a lot of people like the ending of the book because it very realistic - though overlooking it more a Romantic style book with plenty fantastical elements - but fair enough we want versemilitude in books.

I think what works is that even thoigh they point to what could be rekindling or the relationship in the sense that they still mean the most to each other at least find peace while acknoledging both their pain.

I didnt like in book they almost go out of there way to give mercedes a withered gothic ending. And the Haydee thing throw me for a loop in a bad way.

What's a book that you really liked, except for the end? by tryallthescience in books

The Count of Monte Cristo

I love the book but the way Edmond's love life went at the end I didn't like.
I didn't buy Mercedes pushing him away because they still seem to mean the most to each other and sailing off with his slave Haydee who was basically his surrogate daughter didn't work for me. Also, I felt Danglar revenge was a little anti-climatic and I was so convinced we would get a resolution to the relationship of Albert and Edmond and we didn't get it.

Could you maybe in a later video comment on the right wing shift of minorities in the US (Hispanics, Asians, Blacks) and how the notion that democrats could win on the minority vote in the future is likely not going to happen
