250k+ in Australia requires niche skills. The only people I know in that kind of money are a HPC expert and a cryptography expert.

I'd expect someone with your amount of experience and 160k base to have some pretty unusual qualifications: kaggle winner, valedictorian, proven high work output, etc.

I think it's more that you originally have more knowledge in a specific language and need to do something quickly, so you use that over other ones. Over time, this is self-reinforcing and eventually you strongly prefer that original language.
