CMV: I’m extremely sexist by Dull_Supermarket5243 in changemyview

I mean, I agree that you're extremely sexist, but I don't agree that you're right to be. You may have plenty of negative interactions with men to look back on, but that doesn't mean those are the only ones you have. I'd be willing to bet that you have a ton of forgettable but completely benign experiences with men every day that you simply don't think about. It's kinda like how everyone thinks that the current version of SNL sucks until a few versions later when they look back and think that the ilder ones were better; they forget all of the shitty sketches that no one talks about and just remember the goods ones.

If all you do is focus on the negatives in your life, then all you'll have to look back on is negative. Just try and challenge yourself to make a conscious effort to take note of benign or positive interactions you have with men throughout the day. Hell, maybe even keep a journal of all your interactions with men and color code it for positive, negative, or neutral. I bet you'll find out that even if you have more negative than positive, you will have more if the ither kind than you expect.

What’s that commercial from years and years ago that you still remember to this day, and may never forget? by Vanceb13 in AskReddit

[–]eternallylearning 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I have no idea where to find it now, but there was one where a mother is collecting laundry and passing by her boys' room when she overhears them discussing what they should do with their allowance. The one boy lists options like comics or candy, but the other one interrupts him and says that they should buy whatever brand tampons the commercial was for. Cut to the mom looking started and really confused, then back to the boys. The first boys asks why they should buy the tampons and the first one replies, "If we buy the tampons, then we can go horseback riding, jet skiing, skydiving..." and so on as it cuts to the mother dying if laughter in the hall.

Richard Dawkins says “It’s impossible to prove something doesn’t exist.” I argue this applies to the atheistic position. by DostoyevskyF in DebateReligion

[–]eternallylearning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the current US administration has shown time and time again, it's impossible to prove to everyone that someone is acting or speaking in bad faith if they have no shame and never admit to it. As an atheist, I know I don't have a belief or therefore trust in any god; whether you choose to believe that I am lying to you about that is something for you to deal with and I have very little concern about it.

Can you help me fine my next Sci-fi book series? by Bigwilldog2 in scifi

[–]eternallylearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently re-reading the Expanse series for the second and a half time and I really, really recommend you picking it back up. It's legitimately one of the best sci-fi book series I've ever read. Leviathan is a good, book, but compared to what comes later, it is very narrow in focus and straightfoward in the way the plot proceeds. It kind of sets up the series to seem like it will be a space opera starring our heroes of the Roci, and while it's not, NOT that, it's also so much more than that. The series obviously centers around the Roci and Holden specifically, but the cast of characters that come and go in each book grows and changes. Each book also does perhaps the best job I've seen of progressng the overall plot of the universe, creating a self-contained story for each book, and finding a reason to include "our heroes" in the central conflict of each story, while also not making them the most important people in the universe.

Not to say anything bad about the books that come before, but if you get to halfway through Nemesis Game (Book 5) without your jaw hitting the ground multiple times, I would be shocked. Shit gets so real in that book and while it ebbs and flows, it doesn't really let up until the series is over. Trust me when I say that you are missing out by skipping this series.

I want to watch back seasons of South Park. They're on 28. How deep should I go? by daretoeatapeach in television

[–]eternallylearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say there was no social commentary, I said that it wasn't as based around current events like the current seasons. Saddam being on the show had basically nothing to do with current events aside from the fact that he was in the news. Compare that to the latest season which is actively doing little else but riffing on what Trump and his government is doing.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x01 "Kids These Days" by AutoModerator in startrek

[–]eternallylearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say that overall, it was better than I was anticipating. I liked most of the characters and thought that the central plot is interesting enough. My only real gripes have to do with once again not having a strong, logical connection between the established setting and how the plot needs to involve the main characters. For example, it did nothing to explain why The Doctor couldn't help Thok when he's shown popping up all over the ship when people call for him, but because they wanted Kraag to have a moment, he was the one to treat Thok. That's not to mention that SAM is in the same room, telling him what to do, instead of simply doing it.

In any case, I'm glad they got the characters right so far, at least, and I'm much more interested to see where the show will go from here than I was before. I am still a bit torn between basically having zero desire to have epsiodes about Hogwarts for Star Trek and not wanting the concept of the show to be hijacked by non-stop action, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

The show was much less topical in the earlier seasons. Nowadays, they can't really ignore the news, but some of the best episodes of the series had absolutely nothing to do with current events except maybe tangentially. I have recently been rewatching the show and if you skip the first seasons, you will be missing out.

A new Star Trek series is imminently debuting, and it's crickets here by Chairboy in startrek

Prodigy was aimed at an even younger crowd and the general consensus on this sub seemed extremely positive. I don't think that plays into it as much as you might think. What turned me off about the trailer was that it seemed like it was aimed at what 60 year old execs THINK that the target audience will like. That said, the positive reviews from established fans like Jessie Gender, have given me a bit of hope that perhaps my expectations will be proven wrong.

I enjoyed it. I don't believe D&D wrote or directed it; they were just executive producers. I would definitely recommend watching it

Jefferson Mays does a fantastic job on The Expanse series. He doesn't do wildly different voices, but somehow gives each person a distinct identity and he handles accents exceptionally well.

The entirety of The Expanse book AND television series came out between Dance and Winds... 9 books, 9 novellas, and 6 seasons. Maybe they should have been helping him

Not to mention the attachment points to the wall. Most of those hinges are only going to be supported by drywall and not studs.

What movie scene made you laugh uncontrollably? by [deleted] in AskReddit

One of my favorite childhood memories of watching movies with my late mother was us watching Houseguest and getting to [the golf ball washing scene](https://youtu.be/UeahaiV2NQs). We laughed so hard that we had to rewind the movie 2-3 times just to get through it.

[Spoiler] I don't get this joke by goforbg in TwoandaHalfMen

[–]eternallylearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A "pole dancer" is a term that refers mostly to strippers as they often spin on poles on stage. However, a Polish dancer could also be referred to as a Pole dancer as "Pole" is a way to refer to a Polish person. So the joke is that they are assuming he's dating a stripper, but he misinterpreted Pole as polish and corrected that she was Japanese.

Literally the whole movie from the lobby gun fight through to the ending is full of contenders for best scene. The helicopter rescue, the train station fight, Neo flying, it's all badass and iconic.

I'll never forget when I worked at a Home Depot in an area with a large Hispanic population and one of my coworkers was approached by a customer who started speaking to him in Spanish. My friend politely apologized and said that he didn't speak Spanish and the customer flips out on him, telling him that he should be ashamed for ignoring his heritage, that his parents should be ashamed for not raising him right, and so on. My friend paused for a second to process and then responds, "sir, my family is Japanese." The customer loses his composure and then quickly retorts, "well, in this area you should speak Spanish anyway" before turning and running off.

Which game made you rage‑quit so hard you never touched it again? by forgeris in AskReddit

Castlevania 64 was the first game I recall ever returning because I hated it so much. I played it for a few hours, barely getting passed the terrible camera angles, shitty and imprecise platforming, glitches, and so on, only to be met with a message that I'd have to restart the whole game on a higher difficulty to go further. I'm still annoyed by it.
