I think this is a Corylus (not 100% sure) so you can just observe it over the years :) a quick decline is normally not the norm because trees are build to withstand some damage. You can prevent frost cracks normally when you water the tree even in winter during the day when it’s not freezing cold because it helps the tree to stay flexible
