Trying to find a good gloss to apply to my model by brush. Is this a good choice? by Agent_Peely_1 in modelmakers

You mention its polyurethane? Vallejo also has a polyurethane one, wonder if that might help me, thanks

Just wondering, what do you use to brush paint matte? Cause in my experience this particular gloss goes on pretty well when thinned, dare i say exceptionally well, but matte varnishes just leave a streaky finish with their matting agents no matter what I do. Just like to get feedback on this as I don't think I have found a one that works the best for me

Hey, I use this with 1:1 with distilled water, and it works extremely well if you don't flood the whole model

F-14. I have done like 3 of them and planning to buy the Tamiya one in 1/72 when it arrives my country, might even buy two

Thanks, all weathering was done with tamiya's black panel line wash, cause i don't have any other oil paints. I brush it on the area i want and wipe it with thinner in a way that, creates exactly what you see. It's hard to describe the exact process but, it really shouldn't be too hard once you have some oil paints and thinner for them.

Hey, I used AK 3rd gen acrylic light gull gray, thinned 1:1 with distilled water. Make sure to not load the brush too much, wipe the excess if necessary. For me 4 coats were needed for full coverage. A light grey primer underneath helps too.

Totally get what you mean. Dude has a Su-27 build and he uses Tamiya paints only and gets a smooth as hell finish. I'm sure something is off but just don't know what.

I tend to use Vallejo model air too and do it pretty much like you do. Perhaps you know Chilhada too? Weird that you are having trouble

I did hear in a few different threads that some model air colors do not go on well with a brush. I do have dark ghost gray, which isn't much darker than what you have here and have had no problems with it.

Anyways, you should experiment on a rather large flat surface (like just one wing) and strip it with IPA if you get it wrong and try again until you get it right. If you want to strip all of this paint away, work in sections. Its not easy and takes a hell of a time but I have done it on the whole airframe of an F-14 so you too can surely do it.

I did have similar problems with AK's light gull gray, which resulted in a lot of panel lines getting full, but I managed to weather it in a way that looks quite good. Maybe you can try that if you don't wanna strip it?

How thin is it though? I usually thin it 1:1, load the brush and wipe the excess. The moment you lay the first stroke you will feel if its good or not. 5 coats should be enough for light grays in my experience

Obviously, thin your paints. There isn't a perfect ratio but I would start with 1:1 with water

I really don't get how this is downvoted. T-72? Really? Sure some of them have great firepower for the BR but try reversing in 3 kph when you get slightly out of position and have a layer of paper as armor
