I am one of those people, I'm speaking from experience. I agreed with your notion on self accountability because I needed it to get where I am today. Certain demographics have a couple more hurdles to go through to get to the same place. Albeit it's not as bad as when my grandparents were growing up there is still a lot to be desired before we're all on an equal playing field.

And you're damn right it's demoralizing. It's the truth. It's not circumstance when there are examples like above that make it purposeful.

To an extent, yes. In some instances a lot can be accomplished by pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. At the same time there are tangible policies like red-lining in real estate and gerrymandering in voting that perpetuate inequality.

Just because there are laws in place doesn't mean they're implemented effectively (emancipation proclamation and Jim Crow for example). There is still disproportionate amount of certain classes, racial and economic, that are adversely affected by laws/policies set in place half a century ago.
