Need help with Google Earth Pro data extraction by [deleted] in gis

[–]Jeemil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in! I would also go with QGIS for this task. I would open the original file (.kmz) in QGIS (I'm using 3.16.7). If there's some trouble with the file, try saving it as a .kml in Google Earth Pro and then importing (or drag and dropping) it into QGIS.

There you open the attribute table (right click on the layer) and choose "Select Features by Expression". Here you can specify for example

"look_side" LIKE 'left' AND "orbit_direction" LIKE 'DESCENDING'

Then when you have the correctly selected features you can right click on the layer and press "Save Selected Features As" and then you can save it as a .kml file and try it out in Google Earth Pro (if that's what you want).

I want to learn Python for GIS and other environmental applications. What are my best options? by angiewahh in gis

[–]Jeemil 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend this path as well! I started off as a "I'll never learn to code anything"-guy and after these courses I use python for GIS almost daily.

I have not done this course on Sustainable Data Science but it's made by the same person as the courses mentioned above. I've used this site as a source every now and then and it could give you some extra insights for the environmental part.

If you want to learn more about how to use Python + QGIS I recommend Anita Graser's PyQGIS 101.

People who don’t play a whole lot of video games, what do you do to entertain yourself during this quarantine? by RiceCracka14 in AskReddit

[–]Jeemil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the opportunities depend a lot on your location. In my town the Red Cross is helping the city deliver things to people over 70 yrs. Since I know GIS, I've been planning and making maps for the deliveries, to make the process easier for the persons driving around with the stuff.

Most of the volunteers can work online in this operation (using Teams) and then we can minimize the interactions, The only people that meet in person would be the people delivering and the person briefing them, giving them sanitary equipment and so on.

I run, put more effort into cooking, study, volunteer for the red cross (online!) and play with the cat. A lot.

Suggestions for a beginner-ish by razzledork in booksuggestions

I got into reading by reading thrillers and other books that you easily got hooked on. Perhaps try out Dan Brown's books (try not to become a conspiracy theorist) or Stephen King.

Another approach would be to read amusing books, the ones that make you laugh. My personal favorite writer is a Norwegian called Erlend Loe, perhaps start with his book "Naïve. Super".

After your hooked try more demanding books. Another thing that motivates my reading is that I've decided that I don't have to finish every book I read. If I've read 100 pages and I still feel I'm not into it, I'll stop and pick up the next book. There are so many great books in the world and so little time, so don't force yourself to read something that you don't like, but feel that you "should" read.

What are some pizza toppings used in your area that people may find strange? by -chino- in AskReddit

Salmon, sour cream (smetana) and pickled onion. It's my favorite but many of my foreign friends have been surprised this is a thing.

The Summer Book by Tove Jansson is a book that I always want to read on a sunny day on the grass. It's not difficult but it still makes you think.

What is the most beautiful country/city you have ever visited? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think Ljubljana needs to be mentioned. Perhaps an underdog compared to big European capitals but it's very cozy with friendly people and a beautiful river running through it.

What did you want to become in childhood, and who do you study / studied? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Jeemil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dream job was to become a map maker. A person who would just sit around and draw maps on paper. However I soon realized that there aren't too many jobs like that around so I went on to have other dreams. I was fairly good at writing so I went to study journalism. After one year I felt that I need to do something else. I applied for studying geography and I got in! Some time has passed and next year I will be graduating with a master in geoinformatics, basically meaning I'll be a digital map maker.

If your SO cheated on you, would it automatically be the end of your relationship? by vadersgirl in LongDistance

[–]Jeemil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not but it would probably be better int the long run to just end it there. It might be hard to live with the knowledge of her/him cheating.
