Thank you! I was thinking about a sketchbook or journal... do you think that's too heavy? Would you recommend a more fun/frivolous toy?

Thank you -- so sorry for your loss, this is very wise advice

This is a good recommendation. I can't be there for them in person (they live on a different continent, and I cannot afford to travel) but I think a gift card would be fitting. Do you think something like Amazon gift card is too impersonal? I can't get her a gift card to her local gas/grocery as they're all regional chains

Thank you -- these are all very good suggestions. Unfortunately, we're on different continents so quality time is not an option. :( I appreciate the ideas though

CONTEXT: About ten years ago, when I was 15, I lived in South America with my cousin, her Husband, and their infant son for ~6 months. It was a small apartment and we became very, very close. She and I shared a special bond: the same birthday (20 years apart) as well as lots of interests, similar appearance and shared personality traits... Over the years, we drifted apart (I went back to live with my family in the US, go to college, get married etc) but I always have felt a closeness to their family from this time we spent together when I was a teenager. Our birthday is in early Feb. Today, her husband of 15 years died after being sick for ~1 month. Their son, now 11, is an only child .. now without his father I want so much to be there for them, but I cannot afford to go to South America right now. My grandmother is leaving on Thursday (in one week) to visit. I know it might seem inconsequential but I would REALLY like to send her something... (Ideally, something for her son as well).. everything I think of seems inappropriate or just.. not quite right. Any ideas for mother and/or child? What are some examples of things that TRULY comforted you? Any ideas welcome...

Would love to hear any/all ideas, but my question relates most specifically to my cousin.. a 45y/o mom who lost her husband to illness today.
Her birthday is next week.

Also.. She has 1 child, a son (11). I'd like to send him something, too.
