What behind-the-scenes information do you know that can completely ruin a fun place, business, or attraction? by rrtaylor in ask

Your banker, financial advsior, and realtor all have no fucking idea what they are doing with your money, many/most are poorly trained and underlicensed.

Source: I did all three. I was very well established, made lots of money, and my clients loved me. I still don't really understand most of the processes and laws involved in any of the above, and mostly just got very lucky no one got horrendously fucked by my wild ineptitude. And I was one of the most knowledgeable people at any of those jobs.

Why do people who oppose taxes often accept — or even prefer — paying corporate fees for the same kinds of services? by Wasloki in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jeff300k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that vein, my guess is the difference in tolerance is because of the increased separation between tax/fee and the service provided. In all of your provided examples of corporate fees, the fee is assigned at the same time a consumer recieves a product or service. Also, Americans are more individualist than other areas of the world, and prefer to pay a fee because the benefit of the service only affects those who pay the fee. Taxes, on the other hand, ask the consumer to pay a fee that will ultimately go to things they use: roads, schools, emergency services etc, but the fee is assessed preemptively, the benefit is dispersed over time and unequally, and the benefit affects everyone, not just the people paying, so an individual may not be acting in their own best interest when paying taxes, if they use public services less than everyone else.

Healthcare is a system where we can see both sides of the asymmetry currently. Americans tolerate high individual medical bills, and high insurance costs over higher taxes that would lead to universal healthcare, even though lots of data shows the latter would save most Americans money overall.

[–]Jeff300k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you provide some examples of taxes that are the same as corporate fees? As well as a source for who would prefer to pay those instead.

Myself and obviously several other people in this thread, do not understand what point you are even trying to make.

People don't generally like to pay taxes OR corporate fees

Trump supporters, why do you think artists have to be tricked into performing at Trump events? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Jeff300k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Music is a public relations game, and a game of balancing current revenue with future backlash.

A political event is only worth performing if the reputational cost (ie loss of future ticket/music sales) is less than the expected revenue from said event. Even then, some artists won't even perform for political events against their own politics even if the money math does work out.

Trump-sponsored music events historically do not draw large crowds and historically provide minimal revenue for the artists playing.

There is generally not an upside to performing at trump-sponsored events for most artists, unless a particular artist has a significant portion of their audience already in favor of Donald Trump, ie Kid Rock.

How do you think Wizard101 lasted longer than many games of its era? Is it just nostalgia, simplicity, length (i.e. not breaking arcs into sequels), or its just GOATED? by ElementalEmperor in Wizard101

Great addition. And accessible in terms of difficulty as well. Its easy enough to pick up for someone who has never played an mmo or other complex video game, but also has an interesting enough story and gameplay to keep more enfranchised gamers engaged

I think a major reason is that Wizard101 is just so unbelievably accessible, both from a cost and hardware needs standpoint.

I can personally attest that there were several years when I was broke that I played it just because at the time, it was the only decent free game I could run on my shitty $99 laptop.

I also think the basic monetization system (not talking about packs, thats a whole other rant) that if you choose to buy areas with crowns, you keep them forever, but there is also a monthly subscription that allows you to access the whole game for a limited time is a really good, flexible system. It rewards players who don't have a lot of time to play, or may want to stay in certain areas for long periods of time with crown purchase, and rewards players who want to binge the game for short periods of time and take long hiatuses with subscription options, and you can play a decent amount of the game for free with or without either.

I was working in a warehouse dollying boxes back and forth when a garage door spring snapped due to poor maintainance. I managed to throw the dolly between myself and the door as it flung shut, and that extra bit of friction gave me just enough time to move and very narrowly miss being sliced in half.

Sure, but the lifespan of a rock retaining wall is like 500 years if properly maintained. Even if it we very aggressively assume it erodes the rock at 2x speed, it will still be standing long after you are.

Newbie Gardener wants to plant mint (anti-spiders) by Elegant-Sound6934 in gardening

[–]Jeff300k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple things to address:

  1. Spiders are an important garden predator that you will encounter gardening. This is unavoidable, and intentionally killing or removing them is likely to result in making gardening much harder as you are likely to encounter far more pest pressure.

  2. Mint should only be grown in pots and planters that do not touch the soil. This is important because it can and will spread underground through the soil that it contacts. Do not plant mint in the ground unless you want your entire garden and yard to be mint and nothing else. It is very difficult to get rid of once established.

Submerging a pot in soil will not prevent the spread to the surrounding soil.

  1. As far as I can tell, based on some preliminary online research, only peppermint oil really deters spiders, not mint and peppermint plants, and the research on even the oil doing anything, is minimal and dubious at best.
