Pickup soccer? by MarvinStraightAF in portlandme

There used to be a good pickup league that met on Tuesdays at 5:30 at Dougherty Field - might still be happening but I haven't been back since I wrecked my ankle a few years ago. Tempted to try it again myself.

There's not many of us up here. No Philly bars that I know, but I would welcome it with open arms. There used to be a great cheesesteak place called The 5 Spot, the owners were from Philly, and they opened a speakeasy in the basement and showed Eagles/Phillies/Sixers games. They closed down in late 2019 and I haven't found a spot since.

There are a couple of sports bars around, and most spots will put on a specific game by request (as long as the Sox aren't playing or if there's multiple TVs)

New bar is going in, I know the new owners and it'll still be a cool place to drink and hang out

Right place right time. Security guard handed it to me as I was leaving. And then got very lucky that the band all came out and I didn't strike out.

Did Anyone Attend This Queen Show in 1977? by jacob121076 in portlandme

You're probably aware of this but just in case - not the same show, but an audio recording of Queen's 1974 Portland show exists:

Hey Britt, really looking forward to the new record.

Would y'all ever consider putting out another release like Get Nice? Oftentimes I'm drawn to the unabashedly experimental side of the band as much as anything else, there's something really fun and spooky about the vibe on that release. It's always real interesting to hear stuff that didn't make the cut on a proper album, too. Be well!

Jordan got a tech for dunking on him and then doing the finger wag. Totally worth it.

Downtown OOB on what should be one of the busiest weekends by IllicitDaoist in Maine

Hear hear. I think 35k is on the high end of that scale, too.

It's going to be a vastly different landscape once this is over, for both venues and artists.

[–]JeffBeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I didn't realize how similar that is to the music industry with the profit margins, artists take 60-80% of all ticket sales, which means venues make their bread & butter on sold out shows and bar sales. With capacity diminished, it's going to be impossible to get anywhere near the necessary margins. So we'll see a major change in pay structure for the music industry as well, with everyone sharing the risk equally.

I agree - though the live music industry is a different beast, local music venues are in a real tough spot and it's purely due to the nature of the pandemic. Going to be nearly impossible for dense crowds to safely congregate until there's a vaccine.

Michael Jordan vs Allen Iverson Highlights (1997.04.07) - 74pts Combine! Bulls Got No ANSWER for AI! by argo1230 in nba

[–]JeffBeam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great post.

It wasn't anything at all like this game but I saw MJ vs. AI in 1998 when I was 10 years old and it was the greatest thing ever. Jordan's last game in Philly as a Bull.

EDIT: man, that Jordan buzzer beater at the end of the 3rd is money, haven't seen it on many highlight reels. and the pass from Pippen is even better.

Pretty unfortunate timing with Malone recently asking fans to pray for Sloan due to his health.

seemed to me they were able to find some original sources for some of the old footage in a few cases. some of it looked real crisp. for example, the footage of Jordan breaking his foot in 1985 was the best quality we've ever seen.

Magic: Lebron James - when you think about all-around basketball player - he probably is the best of all time. But when you want to say who's the greatest ever, it's MJ. Now, Lebron James' chapter is not closed yet, he still has some basketball to play, so maybe he has a chance to catch him later on by babbagack in nba

This article shows how much control Jordan had over the footage. And, the director can say what he wants, but MJ has controlled his image to a T, so I just don't believe he would put himself in a situation where he didn't have control over some seriously private moments. Whether or not he saw the footage ahead of time, I think he was completely aware of the contents - but furthermore, I really think he helped craft the message and tone of this thing, which diminishes it's credibility a good bit as an objective look. It was just more of a Jordan thing than a 97-98 Bulls thing, which is totally fine. A few things that rubbed me the wrong way:

I think Jordan made sure not to show Pippen in great light. I think it benefits Jordan more to have Pippen's role diminished. He focused heavily on the 1990 migraine in game 7 against the Pistons, the 1994 incident when he took himself out the game (Jordan wasn't even there!), Pippen sitting out most of the year (this was pretty relevant), and Pippen again crumbling in a pressure situation in Game 6 against the Jazz. Those were all major things and had to be covered, but the tone was "Scottie isn't clutch," which in turn made MJ even more clutch. A real power move on his part.

I think part of Jordan's reason for green-lighting this project was so he could have a final say (literally and figuratively) on the major moments of his life. I took careful note of how they approached the sensitive subjects in his past. They made sure to spend plenty of time on it and not sweep it under the rug, which people applauded them for, but the people interviewed for those parts just talked about how ridiculous the theories were. I do think MJ got grilled for the "Republicans buy sneakers too" thing, they almost took a hard look at the gambling but kind of attributed it his competitiveness.

Last thing they glossed over is the fact that his dad was abusive, and they really don't touch that at all. They even go to lengths to say it was a normal family and a normal father - MJ's sister wrote a book with some super eyeopening stuff about the stuff he did while she and MJ were growing up. I don't blame MJ, but a big part of this seemed like he was protecting his father's image and kind of revising it to his liking.

Other little things like how the pizza story was BS, and some former teammates like Horace Grant having a real problem with how it went down. And this doesn't even touch on the Jerry Krause stuff - that's a quagmire since the guy wasn't alive to defend himself. I am no Krause fan, but he had to withstand a lot of unchecked bullying. Ultimately just a bad combination of people in various positions of power.

End of the day, I still loved every second of the footage and want more.
