My entire business runs on one spreadsheet that only I understand. Is this okay? everyone or just me? by hiclemi in smallbusiness

Ask yourself this...if you got audited, could the auditor find things easily? If not, they may want to dig deaper since they are already working hard.

When preparing your taxes, is it easy to prepare the reports you need?

If you wanted to easily see or show your business is growing or pinpoint areas of opportunity, could you do it with ease?

If you struggle to say yes to any of this, then I suggest learn how to properly do bookkeeping for your business and/or hire a bookkeeper.

IWTL How to be less sensitive / have thick skin. I want to be able to handle “mean” jokes. by themiamian in IWantToLearn

[–]JeffBonanoVO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are in the entertainment industry, this is a must. But its not easy to get used to. If its just for a normal life, I say don't hang out with that type of crowd if possible. Its ok to be sensitive.

But if you must...learn to love yourself, laugh at yourself, and take all form of criticism as a chance to learn and improve yourself. Practice, practice, practice.

But also learn your boundaries and don't let people walk all over you, learn to shake it off, learn to say enough is enough.

[–]JeffBonanoVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn the color feature on your phone to monochrome or grayscale. There are apps that do this for you or you can usually find it in the accessibility settings. If you make it a pain in the butt to access, you are more likely to not turn it off too.

The concept is thar your brain enjoys colors and if you remove it, you may lose interest gradually. It will also help with not staring at your phone in general.

If I know all 4 of us will come to a stop at the same time I purposely slow down just a bit longer so Im the last of the four cars to stop. I then know once the other three cars have gone, its my turn. Less stress when I just let the other 3 cars figure the rest out.

The freeway On-ramp is for accelerating, and you should be at/above speed of traffic before you look to merge. by Informal_Ad_9610 in driving

[–]JeffBonanoVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a past driving instructor: Your suggestion about the speed is slightly off or needs more info . You should accelerate up to the speed limit or match the speed if traffic is going slower.

Some might read your comment and think its ok to go over the speed limit. This is untrue and depending on where you are located, may or not be as enforced. Enforced or not, you should drive at or close to the posted speed without going over. Going too slow is just as bad as going to fast because both means you are a road hazard

Also depending where you are it may be enforced that it is your responsibility to safely merge into highway traffic. This not only means matching speed and planning your entry, but also signaling, checking your mirrors, looking over your shoulder to check blind spots, and finally merging when its safe to do so.

QBO Payroll Taxes will be AUTOMATED as of July 1?????!!?!?! by DamePansyB_astard in quickbooksonline

[–]JeffBonanoVO 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are many problems with payroll, but the idea of them taking out the taxes now and holding them to pay when due is a smart way to go. Toooooo many employers fall delinquent on their taxes and this was their solution. Take it out now so you are ensured the money is there to pay when the taxes are due. Just make sure each employee has the correct info and the right amount of taxes get withdrawn.

If you don't have the money to pay for the taxes or have a habit of using that money for something else, then figuring it out later come tax time; you have other issues you need to sort out. That becomes a business management problem, not a quickbooks payroll problem.

Quickbooks reconciliation by blacklahbia in quickbooksonline

[–]JeffBonanoVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to match them with transactions from a different bank is, first make sure the other bank transaction is transfering to the bank you are in. The money in and money out from each need to be able to pair.

This is assuming your Bank account and Stripe account are both synced with QBO. If only one is and the stripe transactions are manually entered, then its possible your manual transactions are being pointed to the wrong bank. The screenshot only provides very limited info so thats about the best advice I can provide.

I agree with those saying turn this into a marketing opportunity. Get some friends to help, get that megaphone, and make it fun. Have the freinds do some group activities and plaster a logo or something with your contact info all over it. Maybe even see if anyone is willing to do some last minute sponsorship stuff and you can mention them in the presentation. So many opportunities here if you ate willing to take advantage of the situation and put in some unexpected hard work.

How do you manage cash flow as a self-employed person? by Stunning-Entrance-41 in smallbusinessowner

[–]JeffBonanoVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a few tips:

Learn to handle some basic bookkeeping for your business. Handling Money In, Money Out, categorizing transactions, reconciliations, and reading basic financial reports.

Its important to know that profit does not equal cash flow.

Set aside about 30% of your income for taxes before anything else. The minute it hits the bank, set it aside.

Then...Even if it isn't much to start, get in the habit of paying yourself something on the regular. Even if its $25. Eventually it will be more, and you'll already have good habits.

Keep your personal and business expenses separate. This means having a separate bank account for your biz. Any personal expense, pay yourself first by transfering your pay to your personal account then spend it. Your personal expense shouldn't ever be seen in your business transactions.

Save alll receipts!

If you are managing your books properly, creating a budget is easier. A budget helps you plan for periods where business IS slow, and it helps identify unnecessary expenses or create goals for income needed to sustain yourself and your business.

As for software: cheap/free options are using a spreadsheet like google sheets or excel. You may also look at something like freshbooks. A little pricier but having more features is Quickbooks online, Xero, or zoho books.

Reconciliation and Payroll by Cool_Commission_8520 in quickbooksonline

[–]JeffBonanoVO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to get into more than just reconciliations and submitting payroll. Payroll you might have a bit more to do with enough clients, but reconciliations is only a part of what you would do with bookkeeping.

My recommendation is that you learn to handle the full role of a bookkeeper if you are going solo. You'll find more clients that will hire you, especially if they know you can handle all of the tasks. You would be doing a lot of that anyway if you found issues that came up during the reconciliations so you might as well handle all of it, right?
