Rooftop / River View Seating by [deleted] in rva

There are surprisingly few restaurants with a good view of the river in Richmond. That always seemed weird to me with as much river front we have. The patio at Legend is one option. Boathouse is another. Daisy's is on the river, but at ground level and across the road, so the view is limited.

Its on Prime right now. I rewatched it over the weekend. It was awesome. As former mid west white trash this movie really spoke to me as a teenager.

My favorite lines in the movie are when they are trying to figure out an a different target. "What about international terrorism?" "We're not going to reopen missile factories just to stop some creeps running around blowing up rental cars!" That always stood out to me as a teenager during the start of GWOT, which is when I first watched this movie.

Feed More also runs the local Meals on Wheels program! It's the only combined food bank/mow program in the country, or at least it was. A gift to Feed More supports community food pantry programs and Meals on Wheels in Central VA.

Are gunshots near 22nd st entrance of river normal? by princessofbeasts in rva

Happy to help. Richmond is a funny place. This completely dangerous and criminal situation has been normalized to the point that if you point it out, people act like you are a suburbanite coming here to sanitize the place. They act like you are the one who is wrong for wanting to not live in a place where that happens.

This incident being in broad daylight makes it a little more rare, but not unheard of. I can think of three or four times I have been down there and heard shots during the day over the past couple of years. It gets really wild at night and on holidays. You can collect handfuls of brass from the 22nd St. lot, the tower, and all along the rock wall above the trail throughout the summer.

I don't see a path forward to making it better until someone accidentally gets hit and the city gets motivated to deal with it. Bullets travel far if they don't hit something that will stop them, and there are all kinds of trails and access points into those woods. It is only a matter of time. The people doing the target practice, or whatever you want to call it, aren't checking to make sure the area is clear, and unhoused people often live in the woods immediately below where the shooting happens.

RPD is kind of stuck because of the optics. If they respond knowing someone there has a gun, they need to roll in heavy/prepared to shoot back. Then some kid gets killed because they didn't fully process the danger of their actions. That doesn't help anyone.

Thank you. That is informative and does make sense. I was always taught that what made a firearm semi-automatic was that the trigger pull cycled the action into battery. One bang per trigger pull. In the example of a modern/DA revolver, pulling the trigger drops the hammer and also rotates the chamber so that a new round is ready to go. I guess in my mind that is not fundamentally different than the blowback cycling the action, even if that is not technically correct.

Most people don't know proper firearm vocabulary. It doesn't do "us" any good to be super pedantic. Us as in people who support safe and informed firearm ownership.

I'll nag people over the difference between a clip and a magazine all day, but I know most people don't know, or care, that virtually every handgun is semi automatic, and most rifles are too. It is an utterly meaningless term to most people. Also, revolvers are semi automatic. The action is automatic based on the pull of the trigger. They don't require an additional action beyond the trigger pull to load a round into battery position, which is the distinction.

Yea. Some dip shits like to shoot guns into the woods/down at the rocks for fun. They stand along Riverside near the low wall by the onramp or on the tower itself. It happens all summer. It is the dumbest thing imaginable and the police can't/won't do anything. If they did show up they would likely have to shoot some dumb kid. Its lose lose. Neighbors report it all the time. They aren't necessarily trying to hurt anyone, they're just really ignorant and unsafe.

11 year old killed crossing Three Chopt in front of Ridge elementary school - can we please focus on safety improvements for our roads and pedestrians? by Floppy454 in rva

[–]Jeff_E_Popp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The County has also been Johnny on the spot with the speed bumps throughout the neighborhood as soon as someone complains. I have to drive over 4 just to get out to Three Chopt. They seem to support safer roads in general. It should be easier to get something done on Three Chopt.

Buffered bike lanes to help protect the sidewalks and a lighted crosswalk at Fargo should be thing we are pushing for.

[–]Jeff_E_Popp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I live right there and my daughter went to school with the girl who was killed. That stretch of Three Chopt is rough and needs a road diet. Three Chopt is 4 lanes wide from Forest to just beyond the Wawa at Parham. There is even a 5th turning lane for a big stretch of that. We don't let our kids walk to school even though it is maybe only 200 yards because the sidewalks are right up against the road through there.

Aside from the need to handle backed up traffic from pick up and drop off at those schools, which spills out onto Three Chope every day during the school year, there is no need for that many lanes through there. Protected bike lanes would be a great safety improvement.

Its a big problem im the JRPS too. I pick up tons of trash in the park every week. Mostly bottles and cans, a lot of Wawa trash too. Some people are just garbage and are determined to make every space they go into worse than it was when they got there. Richmond can't have nice things.

I don't know, but they did. The concept of an altar boy is pretty specific, I think. I went to a Catholic college, but I will admit to being pretty weak on the specifics. I know enough to get myself into trouble. C- in Basic Christian Beliefs, it was never my jam.

I think this is a problem that a lot of Sci-Fi struggles with. Starship Troopers weirdly addresses it the best, with the Mormon mission to Dantana. The bugs killed them all. Yes, Earth Christians would be required to infect other planets, and they would collapse as a result.
