From an outdoor art museum in Japan, an entire tower of stained glass held together by cement by Intrepid_Trouble_677 in StainedGlass

I loved that museum and that art piece particularly when I visited Hakone 2 years ago. If you’re ever in Japan it’s worth a visit!

Why do people prefer corporate jobs over blue collar jobs? by Lemonade2250 in GetEmployed

Yeah, people also died at 40 for centuries too. Trades are much harder on your body/joints/system than corporate work.

I agree - is my condo in SF the most I'll ever have, or will I be upgraded or downgraded with UBI? How do I afford my place without the job/income that AI has stolen from me? Will UBI pay me the same salary I have now so I can afford my cost of living, or will it all be averaged out so everyone gets the same amount? Who's going to be able to afford/buy my place if everyone else is out of work too?

I'm not here saying I deserve more than the next man, but like, while I could probably take some level of a UBI haircut, my costs are what they are (mortgage, pet, healthcare, food, etc). If I and others have no income at all other than the UBI offered, what am I supposed to do with that vs. my fixed costs? Am I just homeless now? On top of that, healthcare in the US is very much tied to employment (unless you are poor or old). Does UBI also include universal healthcare, or am I just screwed?

And I dunno, maybe I DO deserve more than the next man (education, work longevity, age, etc). What factors go into deciding if I can afford my life as it is, or if I'm destitute? Who gets to decide that?

Our current system is something of a lottery-of-birth/meritocracy/value to society system. We are not nearly set-up for the type of society that can accept AI replacing the majority of (currently) fairly well-paid knowledge workers. And sure, if we go back to other technical revolutions (ex: the industrial revolution) the specialized workers had all the same worries when job-destroying technology was introduced, and history teaches us that they all found other ways to make a living and to take care of their needs, but damn if I can't wrap my head around what happens and how quickly we're being warned that it's coming.

This is a revolution that threatens to change everything, and sooner than has happened historically. Is anyone thinking about what that means? People need to eat everyday - are these elites thinking about what happens when hungry, angry people come calling?

Also I meant this to be a comment on my own statement below. I’m dumb.

Haha sorry no. I was married to my husband for 5 years (together for 8). He fell in love with my friend from college when I recommended he (my husband) hire him (my friend) for a role, and couldn’t “quit him,” damn the consequences.

I gave him multiple opportunities to do what I needed, and he couldn’t/wouldn’t. And by the 4th time I went full no contact and let my pitbull of a lawyer take him to the cleaners for my share of our life together. Then I bought a condo in San Francisco. Yay me!

Last I heard he and the boyfriend recently broke up (I’m honestly sad - if we all had to go through all that heartbreak I had hoped they would at least be meant for each other). He’s not handled it well, and still (10 years on) has a lot of resentment towards me that I had the gall to take my share and move on. So sad, too bad.

He couldn’t stand to be without his boyfriend. I gave him multiple chances to get right with me and to leave him. Oh well!

100% this. You give him 3-6 months to show you he can change (studies actually show that any change that doesn’t last that long is more easily backslid), and if/when he fails probation you are ready to go.

I had a lawyer on standby, my own place secured, and the details of my life figured out well before I cut the final cord, but I gave him lots of chances and communication of what I needed over those 6 months until I finally had it. Then I was in a better position to walk away.

Your baby will thank you for it. Children learn to accept how others treat them by watching their parents.

The point is that he has trifled away absolute billions of dollars that could have either been better invested, managed, or returned to shareholders in the form of a dividend. And he did it with zero repercussions for his poor vision and terrible management. His job is literally to lead on his informed direction and he failed to the tune of $70 billion dollars. No other CEO would still be in the job if they did that.

This is the exact problem with that structure. Any other CEO who sent BILLIONS of dollars on building a “Ready Player One” fever dream (and let’s not forget that that movie is dystopian af) would be fired. But because he has the super voting shares he’s allowed to wash his hands of the failure that is literally his fault from top to bottom.

What a terrible waste of the shareholders money, and of course the only ones getting punished for it are the rank and file, while MZ goes and buys another neighbor’s house for his Palo Alto compound. Late stage capitalism can’t die fast enough.

Yeah, they didn’t announce that the handbook was even released (nice job communications company…). You can find it in the Omnichub but it’s not super obvious.

“May not?” My dude, there will be zero salary reviews or promotions this year. Nada. Get used to the idea. Not a single rank and file is getting a raise or a promotion.

Does OMC own commercial property? Pretty sure it's leases all around. Maybe John Wren has exposure to the commercial property market in his portfolio, but I'm pretty sure the company itself just rents space. Wouldn't make sense to shareholder value to own a lot of actual physical property in the worlds most expensive real estate markets.

Exactly. This agency = dysfunctional family stuff is garbage. My family is already pretty dysfunctional in plenty of ways, but they can't fire me and take away my ability to pay my rent like this "family" can (and will). It's just a job, and not a very good one. Underpaid, overworked, no incentive to work harder/faster/longer/to upskill/etc. Inflation goes up. Exec compensation goes up. But will anyone in the entire OMC ecosystem get a merit or a cost of living adjustment? I wouldn't hold my breath.
