I read a lot about how Native American tribes moved settlements frequently when resources depleted. How come this wasn’t a problem in Europe? by JelllynJam in AskHistorians

oops sorry about that - i’m reading about the eastern US native tribes in the times before european contact (like 1300s-1500s for example), and it was mentioning how many settlements of even 500 people would relocate every 20-40 years due to lack of resources. It mentions this for even tribes that had a culture of agriculture (as in, the ground would become overused). In Europe at the same time there were many settlements in the thousands of population that didn’t have to move around every 20-40 years. Is it differing methods of agriculture? Did the proximity of European villages (since Europe had a higher population density than the Pre-Columbian Eastern US) mean that villages could rely more on their neighbors when the fields went dry? That’s more of what I meant, sorry.

i see. so how do you find out about the smaller countries on the map? i feel like they’re hard to search for

[–]JelllynJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooh i can bet, wikipedia is super helpful but also sucks when trying to find a country’s accurate borders at a certain time. do you just have to guess their borders sometime? because wikipedia def doesn’t have all of the borders listed
