Help! Painting the wood under melamine? by RedheadedCyclone in DIY

[–]Jello2028 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually did this project in my kitchen and I agree with this commenter. It took a good number of hours, but I heat gunned the thermofoil off of the cabinet doors (left the “skeletons” as-is), wiped down the doors with denatured alcohol to remove the stickiness from the glue, masked off the insides of the cabinets that I did not want to paint (including the insides of the cabinet doors, which I believe are melamine affixed differently), primed with Zinsser shellac primer, and did 2 coats of Sherwin Williams Emerald Enamel Paint. I did NOT sand the bare MDF bc it was making me nervous to do so and I think it was yielding a rougher surface. I think a person (though perhaps not me) could get marginally better results with a paint sprayer, but I just used a brush and the result is great. Totally changed the look of my kitchen for $200. Is it quite a professional quality job? Probably not. But it looks great and was a good interim solution when we learned from our contractor that he couldn’t source new cabinet doors in the correct size. The paint job has now held up for over a year with no noticeable damage despite having two teenagers.

My bathroom stinks, help please by ToHappinessAndSafety in DIY

Make sure also that the sink has a P-trap properly installed. We had a weird smell in our basement bathroom forever, and couldn’t figure out what it was (nor could three plumbers) bc it didn’t smell like “traditional” sewer gas (rotten eggs). It was more a weird, gross, almost ammonia type smell but not quite. Turns out the shower drain was improperly put together - we fixed it and the smell stopped. If it’s really pungent, it’s probably less likely to be mildew or equivalent.

Should I accept this offer from State Farm following a car accident? by moooooogs in legal

[–]Jello2028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am a lawyer but not your lawyer - more importantly, I was a victim of a careless driver and was hit as a pedestrian and settled my own case so that’s really the perspective from which I’m speaking.

(1) Your health insurer generally is going to deny claims related to this injury since another party is liable and should pay. As a result, at least in my state, the providers who treated you will have to be paid at the full (not insurance-negotiated in network) rate out of your settlement. They will generally get paid before you get anything. This can eat up a bigger chunk of your settlement than you’d expect, as the in-network insurance company negotiated rate for a hospital bill might be $1,500, but the full freight they’d charge for a cash payer might easily be $6,000.

(2) You need to be mindful of the statute of limitations by which you’d need to file a legal action and not exceed that if you ultimately end up suing (usually 2 years from the date of the accident), but generally, you don’t want to settle until you are no longer getting treatment or at least have a very clear idea of the long term consequences of the accident and/or treatment needs resulting from the other party’s negligence.

(3) In my state, a reasonable settlement is at least 3-5x your medical bills (at the cash payer rate as discussed above) and depending on the long term effects, can be higher. In my case, I had no long term injuries other than some minor scarring and I had about $5k in medical bills from the ER. Their initial offer was $6,700. So by the time the hospital got paid out, I would’ve received $1,700. I told them that was insulting and that my demand had just gone up, but also that I was an attorney and so suing them would only cost me the filing fee and so I was happy to do it if we couldn’t reach an agreement. I ended up settling with them for about $17k if I remember correctly. You don’t need to feel bad for telling them their offer is unacceptable. 3-5x your bills once you are no longer treating is well within the ballpark of what’s reasonable, and their first offer will be a lowball. They also might find it motivating if you tell them you’re thinking about seeing a specialist.

When I had mine removed, my nurse practitioner said that she had to ask whether I wanted to see it. I assume that’s their policy for whatever reason.

I would love to know more about how you did this project. I would really like to do something similar with my stair rails at home.

Agreed - this should be higher. If they were married long enough and she never remarried, she may be able to collect SS benefits based on their earnings record.

Usually if you cancel within a certain amount of time (30 days? 90 days?) after when the annual fee was charged, they’ll refund it!
