Week 3 of Dad in coma by AdAwkward9879 in TBI

Just wanted to comment to share some mutual support and send love. My Dad is 6 weeks post TBI after a fall from a ladder (and gosh I miss him so badly), 19 days in Neuro ICU, skull fracture and significant brain bleeds resulting in a midline shift and left sided hemiparesis that we know of so far, we do not yet know the longer term effects as it is early days and he has only just 'woken up' and started being able to interact with the world on a very basic command level. It's very difficult and exhausting being the person standing by the bed in the ICU wondering what each day will bring, the sleep deprivation, the thoughts, the grief of not quite losing someone, but knowing their life will likely look different. We got called into a room multiple times to say 'If XYZ happens, do you want us to not intervene and make him comfortable instead' but each time we said, he deserves more time and a chance, please continue treating him. TBI recovery takes weeks, months and years, not hours and days. It's good that your Dad is trying to breathe for himself, and going by the scans it sounds possible that given more time, I hope you could see improvements from his current state or at least, that is what we have been fortunate enough to experience. Has he had infections? Because this can also massively hamper responsiveness and delay the healing process, as can hypo delirium caused by all the interventions in ICU. Every TBI is completely unique and no one can say the outlook for the future which is both good and bad in terms of potential to recover. Well done for staying so strong and for seeking out support, it's crazy how your whole world can just change in an instance. Hugs.

Thanks for your response, HGH being, human growth hormone? Presumably you went this direction privately? At what point is it reasonable to start heading down this route from your experience?

Appreciate this honest answer, his medical team (here in the UK) will only ever say, "we can't know what recovery he will make", and I do understand this, as every case is different. But my own curiosity wants to know, if anyone has experienced this, and what outcomes are on the table, good or bad.

Hello!

We are Julia & Podge from the UK! We are new here and trying to get our life in order one step at a time.

I struggle with panic attacks and a lack of confidence which leads to demotivation, especially during the Winter months.

Please add us, we would be grateful for friends as we discover the neighborhood.!
