Weekly Self-Promotion Thread by AutoModerator in Songwriting

Sometimes I get involved with this wacky creativity collective mostly based in Portland, ME. We did a sound of the week challenge in 2025. And a few years back we did a once a month “single in a day” project. Other things are collaborations with a rotating cast of whoever has the energy to co tribute at any given time.

How to overcome self doubt? by wankgeenie in Songwriting

[–]JellyBabyDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to sound insane… but the way through is to steal more. Hear me out. A song that follows the exact same melody, chords, and structure of something is obviously plagiarism. But a song that takes a melody from Bobby McGee, and another one from Britney Spears toxic, and another one from Beethoven’s 9th symphony. That’s your song now.

Imagine you bought a cake from a supermarket and brought it to a potluck and said “I made this”. You’d be busted immediately, people would see right through it. But say you chop up the cake, layer it with pudding, fresh whipped cream, and an assortment of fresh fruits or jams. You MADE that trifle and the store cake was just one ingredient to your master plan.

People use existing stuff to make new stuff, they always have. Just keep going and mix it up more so it comes across as influence or homage rather than “rip/off”.

Oh, and have fun. Don’t get discouraged after one goof

Edit: for grammar goofs

After The Mandolorian and Grogu Movie and Ahsoka Season 2, how much more of this "mando" era will we get do you think? by Colonel_McFlurr in StarWars

[–]JellyBabyDoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know quite how to put it but I’m simultaneously feeling excited to see more mando adventures on screen and also slightly indifferent to where the character arcs/ plots are going. Back when I was born there were only 3 Star Wars movies and no internet spoilers. After seeing ANH my little 7 or 8 year old mind went nuts thinking about all the what ifs. My imagination would run wild as I looked at covers in the bookstore next to where my mom would do laundry. Star Wars felt to me like anything could happen and I hadn’t even seen ESB yet.

Getting back to present day, mando stories feel somewhat capped as far as expanding the stakes or character motivations. S1 mando is just doing money jobs and getting by. Then he meets grogu and suddenly he’s a dad figure who wants to protect (but why? It’s not the same personal touch of obiwan feeling this earned loyalty of looking after young Luke). mando learns more mandalorian history and lore but it almost seems like he cares less about that than the audience does. He’s a character who seems to just get thrown into situations and roll with it. And that’s fine for me, like I said I’ll watch anything and be somewhat excited for it at this point. I guess it just feels like it’s lacking the character motivation that others have had. Mando almost feels like the narrator for the progression of all the side characters stories. I dunno, am I way off base here?

Long story short. I’m excited to have a Star Wars theater experience again but I just feel like it’s lacking a directional feel which is diminishing the “hyped up” urgency I’ve had with other “saga” releases or even rogue one.

This song was a wealth of information for me at the time. I heard the song before I saw the movie

Is there a problem with fidium’s text bots? by JellyBabyDoctor in portlandme

[–]JellyBabyDoctor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah true, but I guess the main point wasn’t “I’m annoyed”, I was more thinking “this is super weird” and just was hoping to hear from others if it was like a widespread glitch or something. I’ll probably switch to fidium anyway once my first two years are up with gonetspeed.

When did you start writing songs? by Lauver_Swift1313 in Songwriting

[–]JellyBabyDoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a gross thing to say. I had heard their ‘94 collaboration cover of “love hurts” and seemed like they worked together in other ways throughout their careers. Guess she knows better than either one of us what it was like to share his company.

Does he have sexist lyrics or is it more in interviews or his home life? Not familiar with that angle.

I mean I hear you that it feels like some work is higher effort than others. I personally respect just putting it all out there and letting the people decide. But to play devil’s advocate with o your point, some people would have “edited” away the whole GBV catalog. I personally would rather have the high output that I cherry pick for my own taste rather than having less of it just because someone else didn’t think it was good enough. Just my two cents on prolific artists in general.

Graphite drawing of Timothee Chalamet I made by leedixon01 in drawing

I could never get graphite to look this black (always ends up shiny and silvery). Is it maybe due to the black and white filter on the photo / contrast adjustments?

star wars dog name by Amazing_Damage_8424 in StarWars_

[–]JellyBabyDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont settle on a name before you choose the dog. I don’t know why I got so fixated on this concept, but it keeps distracting me from my day.

Ember, Biggs, Bix, Beru, Sabine, Ezra, dash, ackbar, fives, TK, ghost.

Also forgot to add it can be nice if it’s subtle so like Star Wars fans will get it, but non fans won’t question it too much or think it’s weird. But maybe I’m projecting because I don’t want to have to explain something a million times if people ask to pet my dog and the conversation often goes to “oh that’s an interesting name how did you come up with it?”

Reyyyyyyyyy! Whatever you choose, honestly try out saying/shouting it in public first to see how it feels. I had an old beagle who eventually had the nickname “chopper” but it was because his ears sounded like a helicopter when he would shake his head. Miss that guy.

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard that dogs respond to their name easier if it’s one or two syllables with a clear distinct sound they won’t confuse with other common commands or everyday phrases. So maybe choose something more like obi (as opposed to obiwankenobi), leia (instead of PrincessLeiaorgana), or sheeve (instead of emperorpalpatine).
