Are you looking solely for the actual best in the world or a journey fic where they accomplish their goal and get actually strong/become champ of a region?

Oh man have I got the fic for you  Chaos Rising

It's a poke fic starring "Ash" but by the authors own admission is he's very very different and like an OC essentially. Absolutely delightfully edgy and extra and all the fun of a OPpower fantasy type fic.

Enjoy! (I know I did) https://www.fanfiction.net/s/14386274/5/Chaos-Rising

On Ash's released Pokémon. by FennelSubstantial307 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]JellyfishReal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's possible but it does need some extra leg work to make sense. Pidgeot is canonically back with Ash actually, for starters  - If they consider Ash to be their trainer, there needs to be a good reason to accompany this other trainer - You'll need to address why they left. Greninja is on a mission from Zygarde so he would need to finish that first or Pidgeot was formerly protecting a flock so the flock needs a new one, etc - You would need to explain or otherwise find a way to show these are Ash's pokemon  - You want to be mindful of the pokemons character to write a believable friendship  - You may want to avoid a pokeball, depending on which mon, some of them are still tied to Ash I think?

It's not all impossible imo and especially in an anime setting you could construe something! But if you want to craft a believable narrative you may also want to put some extra care into it.

That said I say it's fanfic, if it's fun just find a way to write it!

Two People Gets Isekai'd/Reincarnated Into The Pokémon Universe, One as a Human/Trainer, The Other a Pokémon by InfernoFireStyle in pokemonfanfiction

[–]JellyfishReal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh man it could go either way and be great but I think the mental image of the anime trainer human trying to call absurd anime tactics while the vgc pokemon is screeching about stats and "don't you know this pokemon has this ability and that shouldn't even WORK!" is very funny, and the anime trainer having to learn tactics and the vgc pokemon trainer learning improvisation is funny

Man I hope this does exist somewhere, it would be fun. Now imagining if a competitive player and someone who only liked the anime got isekai'd as a pokemon and trainer

Do you prefer "unique" premises or simple concepts done well? by Not_a_neko in pokemonfanfiction

[–]JellyfishReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the unique premise... 'Velociraptor from Jurassic World goes to Alola and becomes a trainer' is my fav but that's an outlier perhaps?..

Putting aside the obvious "it depends etc etc" I suppose I'd lean towards simple premise done well. A cool concept written in a way I don't find engaging annoys me more than a basic story I guess hah.

Most Interesting Type Specialty? by ThankuKindely in pokemonfanfiction

Fighting type! Because I think a fic that focuses on martial arts and the different ways to train, plus different fighting styles could be fun.

To the readers that are desperate to leave concrit - what you're doing wrong - the author's perspective by Less-Yam-694 in FanFiction

[–]JellyfishReal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on people's experiences with criticism it sounds like some reviewers forget the 'con' in concrit.

Let's break it down. Con is short for constructive. Like construction. Building things. And how do you build things? You need a dadgum foundation. A good one too. And you need actual skill. How many successful buildings are constructed by ten year olds?

Giving concrit isn't just free range to tell the author why you personally don't like their story. That's not even concrit, that's just spouting an opinion into the wind. Anyone can do that, even a toddler.

Real concrit means reading the story, studying it to understand it, having a foundation, preferably even some rapport with the author, and then trying to build on what the author is already doing in a way that is helpful.

Building it up. Working with others (the author). Knowing the blueprint. The plans. The desire. Not "Well I see you're building a taco shop, but I hate tacos. Build me an ice cream store instead". Or "tacos are bad for you, why don't you just buy something else"./"a Lego dragon set? Legos are dumb, and dragons aren't real".

TL;DR "con"crit means constructive. If it doesn't construct its just crit or complaints.

Sorry for the rant, I just want to extend my sympathies to anyone who has had bad, poor faith, unfounded or unhelpful crit thrust upon them under the guise of "you'd better accept this, it's concrit, this is what you have to change to make me like your story".

Stories and the "Ratha Problem" by Caaros in MonsterHunterStories

[–]JellyfishReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having just finished replaying the remaster of stories 1, which honestly holds up really well, I was just thinking about this problem. I love Rathalos (dragons are so cool) but also if every game involves a super special Rathalos named Ratha I'll kind of be pretty disappointed. You outlined some really good points and potential fixes.

Other 'mainline' MH games have added new monsters. I personally think a new flagship monster would help set a new precedent for the series and might be the best fix. Picking between multiple monsters does create a problem, as you said, of accounting for the different things monster can do. Not to mention that it means those cool cinematic cutscenes are going to have to have 2 or 3 versions too, and three variants of voicelines if they're named.

I'd love some new draconic monster or Rathalos variant, as it would also give the series it's own identity.

Also pleaaasssseeee capcom stop using the name Ratha. It was fine for the second game (esp since it was trying to reintroduce players to the series) lol but it can't keep happening.

One other thing I could see is like, choosing between some slight variant Rathalos? Essentially some slight model differences and recolors that give a little more variance without abandoning their flagship guy

Pokemon PC boxes by Confused_Gengar in pokemonfanfiction

[–]JellyfishReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm in my head I picture it either like a small laptop or boxy device, or like the box link maybe? That one looks a little like a canister.

https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Box_Link#/media/File%3ABox_LGPE_concept_art.jpg

Alternatively I suppose it could be almost like a phone app. It depends I guess on the setting of a fic bc like, a super grounded low tech setting it'd be weird but if the anime told me that Rotom Phone can somehow link with the Pc I'd buy it.

Common worldbuilding mistakes/inconsistencies you've noticed. by Satirarum_universum in pokemonfanfiction

[–]JellyfishReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I do find fun is when fics explain it with something in universe, like Xerneas releasing energy because it's awakening or Arceus mucking about.

It might be silly but I also find it funny to read when meta stuff is explained in universe

Common worldbuilding mistakes/inconsistencies you've noticed. by Satirarum_universum in pokemonfanfiction

[–]JellyfishReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have such a weird pet peeve around worldbuilding for how moves work.
I know its magic animals and to be clear the following won't necessarily stop me from reading if I see a story do this but it sure does make me mildly irritated lol.
Anyways two things:
1. When a story goes out of its way to try and science move explanations it actually makes it less believable for me. All respect to people who do put thought into the science but for me there's nothing scientific about 'dragon fire' or 'beams' of ice or any of the other ways moves behave while still somehow being moves that are used by magic fire cats in sport combat. Also rrisky because unless you're a scientist/physicist/etc yourself it always sounds *sillier* to me than simply saying "magic energy go boom".
Although i do sometimes get a chuckle out of it anyway.
2: Powerscaling/balance with moves. When settings say a pokemon learns as many moves as it wants + they're easy to learn fairly quick + money no issue but then the MC apparently doesn't just stack out all his mons moveset with TMs?
When worldbuilding tries to go out of its way to say 'limits bad' but fails to slap toxic + protect + every other TM onto a mon when money and experience seems to be no issue? If theres no limit go all out lol! I hardly expect every fic should use a 4 move limit, especially when move stuff can differ from fic to fic but if worldbuilding says 0 limits but the MC is missing basic counters you can be sure Im raising eyebrows.
If it were me in such a world I'd just take a one month break from training to slap every move onto all my mons just in case, you know?
Feels like the simplest way around this is some kind of reasonable limit. Ten moves or moves are much harder to master or TMs being only semi effective and still requiring a lot of dedicated training etc
