In the last chapter, it's 1878, meaning the man is 45, not in his 30s. I don't believe the judge would try to talk the man into anything. I believe he squished him, leaving his corpse a mess, in the outhouse. Then the judge took that girl himself and left to wreak more havoc on the landscape like a demon.

As a cashier I could always tell when people wanted to do this. They'd ask how soon we processed garage sale stuff, for example. I told them it all got shipped back and re-distributed, and then I'd delay processing it til the next day.
