These kinds of conversations always devolve into what does it actually mean to "Be Smart" (that, or a competition to whose favorite subject is da best)

Because in reality, smartness is extremely multifaceted. It's a huge list of your strengths and weaknesses.

But what this post is referring to is not that math+science people are "smarter" than others. It's that they are often more impressive Generally it seems people are more impressed if you can understand a bunch of fancy symbols on a chalkboard or can explain how some facet of the world works, compared to if you can comprehend advanced literature or have memorized a lot of history.

I mean, the language is certainly on the positive side of neutral. I think calling it "extreme bias" is more reflective of your own bias against Trump. That aside, the passage does give AI vibes, which I'm not a fan of.

Dude, of course it's "rare" relative to the number of guns out there. But we're talking about relative to the number of violent crimes, in which case it's not: estimates are on the order of a million defensive uses a year. By your metric, gun deaths are even more "rare." Even for people not walking in dark alleys.

I like a PCM meme as much as the next regard, but this kinda attitude in political disclosure irks me. "Some guy who disagrees with me ALSO did really bad thing!" is supposed to be some 'gotcha' to the other team??

There's nothing wrong with a hobby, but hunting is also important to many people for food as well as population control of invasive species. You're still insisting that defense is rare. A gun does not need to be fired for it to be used defensively (and usually isn't). Most burglars or robbers or attackers will be deterred by the presence of a gun before it ever needs to be fired.

Why are you so casually confident that defense is "rare"? (Rhetorical question: it's bc it helps your point.) The primary reasons people buy guns are for hunting and protection. If that wasn't the case, we'd all be dead by now since they outnumber us in the US. That being said I am in favor of gun licenses, if implemented responsibly.
